This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Control Studies on the Plum Curculio in Connecticut Apple Orchards The plum curculio has been recognized as a major enemy Of fruits in New England since Colonial days. Records of its occur rence in this country, may be found in literature appearing between 1735 and 17 502, and judging from the amount written since that time it has continued its depredations undiminished in severity, ranking today as one of the most important fruit pests. It is probably a native American insect, which became destructive on the introduction of fruit culture by the colonists. The studies described in this paper were commenced in 1923, and therefore cover a period of six seasons. Though most of the Observations were made at the Station farm at Mount Carmel, the orchard of Mr. C. E. Shepard of the West Woods section of Mount Carmel was placed at our disposal for experimental work. The systematic Spraying tests recorded on pages 407-434 represent five seasons' work at the Station farm and four Seasons at Mr. Shepard's orchard. An article on this insect was published In the Yearbook of the department for 1905 in a paper entitled The principal insect enemies of the peach. Circular 73 of the Bureau of Entomology, on the plum curculio, by Messrs. Fred Johnson and A. A. Girault, was published in 1906; and the results of a comparison of the demonstration and one - spray methods in the control of the codling moth and plum curculio were published in November, 1910, as Part VII of Bulletin no. 80 of the Bureau of Entomology, a revised edition of which was issued March 30, 1911. Circular 120 of the Bureau of Entomology, entitled Control of the Brown - rot and Plum Curculio on Peaches, by W. M. Scott, of the Bureau of Plant Indus try, and the senior author, was issued in March, 1910. This gave instructions for the preparation and use Of a combined spray for the curculio and fungous diseases of the fruit of the peach. The results of further experiments in peach spraying for the curculio, brown - rot, and scab were given in Farmers' Bulletin 440, by W. M. Scott and the senior author, published in March, 1911. There was a moderately heavy infestation of curculio, although this infesta tion in the untreated or check plat was not SO heavy as in that of Of the fruit from the check plat, 22. 9 per cent was infested with the curculio; 32 per cent showed brown-rot infection, and per cent infection with scab. Book Spraying Apples for the Plum Curculio Classic Reprint

Download or read book Spraying Apples for the Plum Curculio Classic Reprint written by S. A. Forbes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spraying Apples for the Plum-Curculio It has been known for more than a hundred years that t' apple was subject to injury by the plum-curculio, but as this injury has been commonly reckoned less important than that done by the codling - moth, the matter has received, of late, comparatively little attention until within the last six or seven years. Since the dis crimination of different market grades of apples has been generally introduced - a grading based not only upon size and soundness, but also upon superficial appearance - the slight surface injuries done by the new generation of the plum-curculio, both in laying the eggs and in feeding on the fruit, have acquired a great importance. The consequence of a noticeable injury of this sort, although affecting but little, and in many cases scarcely at all, the edible quality of the apple so injured, is to reduce its selling value from N o. I grade to N o. 2, the actual profits of the crop disappearing in this process. These facts having been repeatedly brought to my knowledge by Illinois horticulturists, I undertook to work out the causes of these surface blemishes in general, and to demonstrate more accurately than has hitherto been done means of preventing them by a de struction of the curculios themselves. Indeed, the importance of this investigation has grown upon me as it has become evident that these small superficial injuries very often give entrance through the skin of the apple to bacteria and to fungus spores of various kinds, causing rots and blights of the fruit which might be largely pre vented by a timely destruction of the insects. Book Three Snout Beetles That Attack Apples

Download or read book Three Snout Beetles That Attack Apples written by Fred. E. Brooks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Snout Beetles That Attack Apples: Plum Curculio, Apple Curculio, Apple Weevil It is hoped that this bulletin may aid the fruit grower to a clearer understanding of the habits of these insects and to a better knowledge of the possibilities of holding them in check in the orchard. Such a knowledge should assist in extending the practice of spraying which, at present, is our surest and most practicable method of destroying these pests. The writer wishes to explain that in describing the habits and life histories of the apple curculio, and, to some extent also, those of the plum curculio, he has drawn freely from the writings of other entomologists. Book Pesticide Resistance in Arthropods

Download or read book Pesticide Resistance in Arthropods written by Richard Roush and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruce E. Tabashnik and Richard T. Roush Pesticide resistance is an increasingly urgent worldwide problem. Resistance to one or more pesticides has been documented in more than 440 species of insects and mites. Resistance in vectors of human dise8se, particularly malaria-transmit ting mosquitoes, is a serious threat to public health in many nations. Agricultural productivity is jeopardized because of widespread resistance in crop and livestock pests. Serious resistance problems are also evident in pests of the urban environ ment, most notably cockroaches. Better understanding of pesticide resistance is needed to devise techniques for managing resistance (Le. , slowing, preventing, or reversing development of resistance in pests and promoting it in beneficial natural enemies). At the same time, resistance is a dramatic example of evolution. Knowledge of resistance can thus provide fundamental insights into evolution, genetics, physiology, and ecology. Resistance management can help to reduce the harmful effects of pesticides by decreasing rates of pesticide use and prolonging the efficacy of environmentally safe pesticides. In response to resistance problems, the concentration or frequency of pesticide applications is often increased. Effective resistance management would reduce this type of increased pesticide use. Improved monitoring of resis tance would also decrease the number of ineffective pesticide applications that are made when a resistance problem exists but has not been diagnosed. Resistance often leads to replacement of one pesticide with another that is more expensive and less compatible with alternative controls.

Download or read book Insects at Low Temperature written by Richard Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of insects at low temperature is a comparatively new field. Only recently has insect cryobiology begun to mature, as research moves from a descriptive approach to a search for underlying mechanisms at diverse levels of organization ranging from the gene and cell to ecological and evolutionary relationships. Knowledge of insect responses to low temperature is crucial for understanding the biology of insects living in seasonally varying habitats as well as in polar regions. It is not possible to precisely define low temperature. In the tropics exposure to 10-15°C may induce chill coma or death, whereas some insects in temperate and polar regions remain active and indeed even able to fly at O°C or below. In contrast, for persons interested in cryopreservation, low temperature may mean storage in liquid nitrogen at - 196°C. In the last decade, interest in adaptations of invertebrates to low temperature has risen steadily. In part, this book had its origins in a symposium on this subject that was held at the annual meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Louisville, Kentucky, USA in December, 1988. However, the emergence and growth of this area has also been strongly influenced by an informal group of investigators who met in a series of symposia held in Oslo, Norway in 1982, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada in 1985 and in Cambridge, England in 1988. Another is scheduled for Binghamton, New York, USA (1990).
