Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In numerous conversations with our colleagues from India, it was suggested that we help to institute a series of symposia in India similar in nature to those that have been conducted by our Latin American colleagues for more than 10 years. We were fortunate to have with us in Oak Ridge Dr. Niyogi and Dr. Mitra from Indian universities. Their close ties with the Bose Institute in Calcutta and the resultant correspondence with the Institute Director, Dr. S. M. Sircar, provided the stimulus for organization of this first Indian symposium, which was held in Calcutta. Under the direction of Dr. Sircar, Dr. B. B. Biswas did an outstandingjob of organizing this conference. Financial support was arranged through Dr. R. R. Ronkin of the United States National Science Foundation, who smoothed the way for the use of PL 480 funds which were approved by the Indian Government for the organization and running of this most valuable symposium. The many Indian scientists who contributed papers and enthusiastically and vigorously entered into the discussions demonstrated the strength of modern science in India. The topic, Control of Transcription, is a timely one, and considerable activity in this area is going on all over the world. The success of this symposium speaks well for the future of these Indian conferences and workshops being planned for the next few years. Again, the worldwide "community of science" is clearly manifested by the close cooperation we have observed in this fruitful and successful symposium.

Book Handbook of Microbiology

Download or read book Handbook of Microbiology written by Allen I Laskin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 941 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Included in the present volume are selected pages from Volume I, II, and IV of the CRC Handbook of Microbiology. Data from Volume II has not been included (microbial products), which did not lend itself readily to the selection of a few pages. As it is the present volume includes information about the various groups of microorganisms, their cell walls, and their genetics. Data on amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids re included, together with diagrams of metabolic pathways and information on immunocompetent cells. General reference data include a glossary, statistical tables and other information that is hoped to be found useful by the reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this and future volumes of the Handbook of Genetics is to bring together a collection of relatively short, authoritative essays or annotated compilations of data on topics of significance to geneticists. Many of the essays will deal with various aspects of the biology of certain species selected because they are favorite subjects for genetic investigation in nature or the laboratory. Often there will be an encyclopedic amount of information available on such a species, with new papers appearing daily. Most of these will be written for specialists in a jargon that is be wildering to a novice, and sometimes even to a veteran geneticist working with evolutionarily distant organisms. For such readers what is needed is a written introduction to the morphology, life cycle, reproductive be havior, and culture methods for the species in question. What are its par ticular advantages (and disadvantages) for genetic study, and what have we learned from it? Where are the classic papers, the key bibliographies, and how does one get stocks of wild type or mutant strains? The chapters devoted to different species will contain information of this sort. Only a few hundreds of the millions of species available to biologists have been subjected to detailed genetic study. However, those that have make up a very heterogeneous sample of the living world.

  • Pages : 761 pages

Download or read book The Bacteriophages written by Richard Calendar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative, timely, and comprehensively referenced compendium on the bacteriophages explores current views of how viruses infect bacteria. In combination with classical phage molecular genetics, new structural, genomic, and single-molecule technologies have rendered an explosion in our knowledge of phages. Bacteriophages, the most abundant and genetically diverse type of organism in the biosphere, were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century and enjoyed decades of used as anti-bacterial agents before being eclipsed by the antibiotic era. Since 1988, phages have come back into the spotlight as major factors in pathogenesis, bacterial evolution, and ecology. This book reveals their compelling elegence of function and their almost inconceivable diversity.Much of the founding work in molecular biology and structural biology was done on bacteriophages. These are widely used in molecular biology research and in biotechnology, as probes and markers, and in the popular method of assesing gene expression.
