Book excerpt: The systemic insecticide carbofuran was applied to the soil under planted loblolly pines in studies near Aiken, SC, at ages 2 throught 5. As expected, the insecticide sharply reduced tip-moth damage and increased the height of 5-year-old saplings, compared with untreated controls. Untreated trees not only had more tip-moth injury but also had significantly more fusiform rust infections. Carbofuran itself did not have any fungicidal effect which could have been responsible for the lower incidence of rust among the treated trees. Since carbofuran treatment not only reduced damage form tip moth but also decreased rust infection, threse results may prompt new interest in the economics of tip-moth control.

Book excerpt: The pine tip moth (Rhyacionia spp.) is a persistent pest of young loblolly pine plantations of the Western Gulf Coastal Plain, yet there is uncertainty about the site and stand factors that determine the degree of infestation and the morphological and economic impact on tree growth. A mixed-effects logistic regression model of infestation rate for each pine tip moth generation was developed to test for a relationship with the site and stand factors. A nonlinear mixed-effects treatment response function was incorporated into an existing growth and yield system to project the impact of pine tip moth on tree growth and the profitability of treatment. The degree of pine tip moth infestation was highly influenced by year of measurement and the region where the plot was located and the resulting variability prevented precise estimates of infestation based on the site and stand factors measured. A significant impact of pine tip moth on tree height, diameter, and volume was detected in the first three and four years of measurement but dissipated as the stand ages. The average cumulative increase in yield due to pine tip moth protection ranged from 0.46 to 2.73 tons per acre, increasing with site index, occurring between 8 and 12 years after planting, with higher site indices reaching their peak sooner. The present value of pine tip moth control ranged from $1.15 to $17.21 per acre, with higher values on higher site indices and lower alternative rates of return.
