Book Control of Nonlinear Multibody Flexible Space Structures

Download or read book Control of Nonlinear Multibody Flexible Space Structures written by Atul G. Kelkar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-03-12 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing the difficult problem of controlling flexible spacecraft having multiple articulated appendages is the aim of this volume. Such systems are needed for space mission concepts including multi-payload space platforms and autonomous space-based manipulators. These systems are characterised by highly nonlinear dynamics, flexibility in members and joints, low inherent damping, and modeling uncertainty. A complete nonlinear rotational dynamic model of a generic multibody flexible system is derived, and is shown to possess certain passivity properties. The main result is a class of passivity-based nonlinear and linear output feedback control laws that enable globally stable closed-loop manoeuvres. The control laws are robust to parametric uncertainties, unmodeled uncertainties, and in some cases, actuator and sensor nonlinearities. All results given are also applicable to flexible terrestrial manipulators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advances made in computer technology and efficiency of numerical algorithms over last decade, the MPC strategies have become quite popular among control community. However, application of MPC or GPC to flexible space structure control has not been explored adequately in the literature. The work presented in this thesis primarily focuses on application of GPC to control of nonlinear flexible space structures. This thesis is particularly devoted to the development of various approximate dynamic models, design and assessment of candidate controllers, and extensive numerical simulations for a realistic multibody flexible spacecraft, namely, Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter (JIMO) - a Prometheus class of spacecraft proposed by NASA for deep space exploratory missions. A stable GPC algorithm is developed for Multi-Input-Multi-Output (MIMO) systems. An end-point weighting (penalty) is used in the GPC cost function to guarantee the nominal stability of the closed-loop system. A method is given to compute the desired end-point state from the desired output trajectory. The methodologies based on Fake Algebraic Riccati Equation (FARE) and constrained nonlinear optimization, are developed for synthesis of state weighting matrix. This makes this formulation more practical. A stable reconfigurable GPC architecture is presented and its effectiveness is demonstrated on both aircraft as well as spacecraft model. A representative in-orbit maneuver is used for assessing the performance of various control strategies using various design models. Different approximate dynamic models used for analysis include linear single body flexible structure, nonlinear single body flexible structure, and nonlinear multibody flexible structure. The control laws evaluated include traditional GPC, feedback linearization-based GPC (FLGPC), reconfigurable GPC, and nonlinear dissipative control. These various control schemes are evaluated for robust stability and robust performance in the presence of parametric uncertainties and input disturbances. Finally, the conclusions are made with regard to the efficacy of these controllers and potential directions for future research.

Book Gain Scheduling for Geometrically Nonlinear Flexible Space Structures

Download or read book Gain Scheduling for Geometrically Nonlinear Flexible Space Structures written by Jeremy Hoyt Yung and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gain-scheduling approach for the control of geometrically nonlinear structures is developed. The objective is to improve performance over current linear design techniques that are applied to the same control problem. The approach is applicable to a variety of structures that have complex dynamics with slow variations such as flexible robotic arms and space structures with gimballing solar arrays. The modeling approach is motivated by the lack of in situ test data available for design of 0-g controllers. A Linear Fractional form allows the nonlinear and uncertain aspects of the structure to be modeled independently. The geometric nonlinearity is modeled using a feedback description of structural coupling. The uncertainty model is based on a physical parameter description, so that an experimentally identified 1-g parametric uncertainty model can be extrapolated to 0-g. The control approach is motivated by the success of linear control design synthesis and analysis techniques for space structures. Graphical heuristics for linear control design using Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) and Sensitivity Weighted LQG techniques are introduced. A procedure to realize reduced-order gain-scheduled controllers from a family of linear state-space controllers is developed. A nonlinear analysis framework suitable for the slow variations of geometrically nonlinear structures is also presented. The realization procedure and nonlinear analysis is combined with the graphical linear design heuristics to form an iterative gain scheduled design process. The complete gain scheduling approach is applied to the MIT/MACE-II experiment flown on the International Space Station. Gain scheduled controller designs are shown to provide improved performance and robustness over a Multiple Model linear controllerdesign.

Book The Dynamics and Control of Large Flexible Space Structures

Download or read book The Dynamics and Control of Large Flexible Space Structures written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamics and attitude and shape control of very large, inherently flexible spacecraft systems were investigated. Increasingly more complex examples were examined, beginning with a uniform free-free beam, next a free-free uniform plate/platform and finally by considering a thin shallow spherical shell structure in orbit. The effects devices were modeled. For given sets of assumed actuator locations, the controllability of these systems was first established. Control laws for each of the actuators were developed based on decoupling techniques (including distributed modal control) pole placement algorithms and a application of the linear regulator problem for optical control theory. Book Large Space Structures Dynamics and Control

Download or read book Large Space Structures Dynamics and Control written by S.N. Atluri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is intended to provide a snapshot of the status and opportunities for advan cement in the technologies of dynamics and control oflarge flexible spacecraft structures. It is a reflection ofthe serious dialog and assessments going on all over the world, across a wide variety of scientific and technical disciplines, as we contemplate the next major milestone in mankind's romance with space: the transition from exploration and experimentation to commercial and defense exploitation. This exploitation is already in full swing in the space communications area. Both military and civilian objectives are being pursued with increasingly more sophisticated systems such as large antenna reflectors with active shape control. Both the NATO and Warsaw pact alliances are pursuing permanent space stations in orbit: large structural systems whose development calls for in-situ fabrication and/or assembly and whose operation will demand innovations in controls technology. The last ten years have witnessed a fairly brisk research activity in the dynamics and control oflarge space structures in orderto establish a technology base forthe development of advanced spacecraft systems envisioned for the future. They have spanned a wide spectrum of activity from fundamental methods development to systems concept studies and laboratory experimentation and demonstrations. Some flight experiments have also been conducted for various purposes such as the characterization of the space enviroment, durability of materials and devices in that environment, assembly and repair operations, and the dynamic behavior of flexible structures. It is this last area that has prompted this monogram.
