Book excerpt: Fifty-four licensed pilots carried out multiple surveillance missions on two high-fidelity simulations representing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In Experiment 1, pilots were required to operate a single UAV through three different mission conditions: a baseline condition, one that offloaded relevant information to the auditory channel, and one that provided automation of flight path control. In Experiment 2, pilots operated two UAVs simultaneously through the same three mission conditions. Pilots were responsible for the following tasks: (1) mission completion, (2) target search, and (3) systems monitoring. Results of the experiment suggest that automation and auditory offloading can be beneficial to performance by reducing interference between tasks, and thus alleviating overall workload.

This work involved exploratory case study research into the envisioned world design problem of networked Predator multi-UAV control, as a candidate for meeting higher Predator sortie requirements without the need for a one for one increase in pilots. The concept involves the development of a potential new position for controlling multiple UAVs, called the Multi-Aircraft Manager (MAM). The goal was to analyze work requirements and develop representational models of the structure of this new work domain and develop an initial MAM display design representation (with a temporal emphasis) as a first hypothesis for an iterative program of evaluation and refinement. An additional goal was to discover and document, through this case study, what analysis methods explored helped to inform the design of the display representations. The MAM Tasking and Timeline Display was ecologically designed and mapped from the MAM cognitive work analysis (CWA) as a hypothesis of the work support the MAM will need to perform multi-aircraft management within a Global Unmanned Air System (UAS) work environment. This display includes timeline, status, and workload management vantages intended to complement the traditional geospatial map-based displays used by UAV pilots. This conceptual low fidelity display was used to both further the discussion of MAM among domain practitioners in a concrete way, enrich the work analysis, as well as to gather more display design requirements. The display concept served as an artifact to assist potential future users of MAM displays in envisioning the possibilities for supporting MAM. This is only the first step in an iterative program of evaluation and display refinement research needed for evolving the MAM vision concept and developing advanced human computer interface (HCI) displays in support of MAM.

Book excerpt: An evaluation was conducted on a generic UAV operator interface simulation testbed to explore the effects of levels-of-automation (LOAs) and automation reliability on the number of simulated UAVs that could be supervised by a single operator. LOAs included Management-by-Consent (operator consent required) and Management-by-Exception (action automatic unless operator declines). Results indicated that the tasks were manageable, but performance decreased with increased number of UAVs supervised and reduced automation reliability. Performance with the two LOAs varied little and did not show a consistent trend across measures. Analyses indicated that participants typically did not utilize the automation. A follow-on study was conducted that employed shorter LOA time limits. Results showed participants' workload and confidence ratings were less favorable for the shorter limits and they still exercised the automation rarely, although more frequently. Further research is needed to explore the complex relationship between LOAs, time limits, perception of workload, vigilance effects, and confidence.

Book excerpt: The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is increasing worldwide and in the U.S. will include federal and commercial sectors as well as the military. Although a demand for suitable operators is growing, surprisingly, there exist no precise criteria for operator selection of remote piloted aircraft. Due to the transition from operator control of a single UAV to multiple UAVs, factors related to attentional control will be important for pilot selection. The current study examined the potential benefit high executive functioning (EF) played in UAV simulation where high task load and evaluative stress were present. Basic cognitive control elements of EF (i.e., inhibition, switching and the updating and monitoring of working memory) were assessed. Participants (N = 92) were recruited into either an evaluative stress (negative feedback) or control group. Two practice trials were performed prior to the two experimental trials; task load was counterbalanced across participants. State measures were taken at baseline and following each trial using the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) and Dundee Stress State Questionnaire (DSSQ). Additionally, workload was assessed after each trial using the NASA-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX). The results of the study showed that UAV performance was more sensitive to task related stress compared to evaluative stress. All UAV performance measures showed a decline with high task load except search accuracy. Evaluative stress interacted with task load revealing that individuals receiving negative feedback in the high task load condition did not increase waypoint usage, a compensatory behavior. Evaluative stress effectively increased reported stress seen as increases in distress, negative affect and frustration, measured by the NASA-TLX. The manipulations of stress caused differential responses across the various state and workload measures. Surprisingly performance on the EF tasks was related more strongly to subjective stress than to performance. Specifically, high inhibitory ability, as measured by the stop-signal task, seemed to play some part in protecting operators from experiencing negative results of stress such as worry, distress, threat appraisal and feelings of situational uncontrollability. Contrastingly, the letter memory task (updating) showed a positive relationship with these same subjective stress factors. As letter memory scores improve more stress experiences are reported. Though this finding is surprising, it is interpreted as a sign of resource availability for processing one's own stress response. The findings presented are helpful in understanding how the stressors intrinsic to UAV operation impact both subjective stress and performance. Although current findings cannot be generalized to all UAVs, they reveal that caution must be exercised in the implementation of multi-UAV control. Additionally, these findings highlight the benefit of using a metric such as the DSSQ to understand the various forms of operator stress, both task load and evaluative stress. These findings suggest the DSSQ may be useful in understanding how changes in task load, in addition to evaluative stress responses, may arise as UAV job design changes. Lastly, executive functioning, specifically inhibitory ability, may be a key operator trait necessary to preserve mental well-being and protect against stress, although replication of the present findings is required.

Book excerpt: This book is based on the authors’ recent research results on formation control problems, including time-varying formation, communication delays, fault-tolerant formation for multiple UAV systems with highly nonlinear and coupled, parameter uncertainties, and external disturbances. Differentiating from existing works, this book presents a robust optimal formation approach to designing distributed cooperative control laws for a group of UAVs, based on the linear quadratic regulator control method and the robust compensation theory. The proposed control method is composed of two parts: the nominal part to achieve desired tracking performance and the robust compensation part to restrain the influence of highly nonlinear and strongly coupled parameter uncertainties, and external disturbances on the global closed-loop control system. Furthermore, this book gives proof of their robust properties. The influence of communication delays and actuator fault tolerance can be restrained by the proposed robust formation control protocol, and the formation tracking errors can converge into a neighborhood of the origin bounded by a given constant in a finite time. Moreover, the book provides details about the practical application of the proposed method to design formation control systems for multiple quadrotors and tail-sitters. Additional features include a robust control method that is proposed to address the formation control problem for UAVs and theoretical and experimental research for the cooperative flight of the quadrotor UAV group and the tail-sitter UAV group. Book excerpt: Early feedback from the operation of uninhabited air vehicles (UAVs) and uninhabited combat air vehicles (UCAVs) indicates the need for improvement in their operator interfaces. This applies for both the effective control of UAVs as well as the management of data and efficient dissemination of the associated information products. One means of addressing this issue is the use of intelligent/adaptive interfaces (IAIs) for decision support. The principal focus of the work reported in this publication was to investigate the efficiency of IAIs in an operational situation. The selected environment involved CP140 aircraft operations in support of counterterrorism activities, and the associated operator interface within which the IAI was modelled was the tactical workstations of a modernized CP140. The operator positions studied were the tactical navigator, UAV operator, and UAV pilot. A one-hour mission scenario was developed and a hierarchical goal analysis & operational sequence diagrams were completed in order to facilitate the development of a performance model. The model was run in two modes: one assuming the operators used a conventional interface and the other assuming interface automation using an IAI. Results are presented showing the difference between mission activities with & without automation as reflected in the time to complete critical task sequences & in other measures of performance.
