Book Economic Planning in the British Building Industry 1945 1949

Download or read book Economic Planning in the British Building Industry 1945 1949 written by Nathan Rosenberg and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume undertakes the examination and appraisal of the economic controls employed by the British Labor Government in attempting to regulate the output of the building industry in the years immediately following the Second World War. An unfortunate consequence of earlier preoccupation with purely income-generating aspects of investment activity was that insufficient consideration was given to the allocation of investment resources. It was precisely this latter problem, however, which became a matter of major concern to the Labor Government. Its building program in the postwar years is examined here with particular reference to the program's peculiar structure and organization and the availability of building workers and materials. Discussion also covers the Government's administrative machinery for regulating building demand and for determining the uses to which building resources were put, as well as the priorities which the Government attempted to impose upon the industry and the consequences of specific policy decisions which were made in attempting to enforce these priorities. The British experience during the years between 1945 and 1949 provides numerous insights into the requirements and the problems associated with centralized planning of the operation of a private industry. The attempt to regulate the building industry is of increasing relevance in view of the growing recognition that nationalization is no panacea and that government planning must be more and more concerned with influencing the behavior of privately-operated industries. The importance of the present study is further enhanced by the fact that it deals with a strategic investment goods industry which must inevitably play a major role in the current and future "development planning" of underdeveloped countries. This work, therefore, is of special interest to economists concerned with the problems of government economic planning. Moreover, because of its strong focus upon the organizational and administrative aspects of government planning, Economic Planning in the British Building Industry is of vital interest to political scientists and all students of public administration.

Book Industrial Policy in Britain 1945 1951

Download or read book Industrial Policy in Britain 1945 1951 written by Martin Chick and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-04-30 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a detailed archive-based study of the economic planning of the Attlee governments, in which the author seeks to analyse the interaction between the decisions of central planners and the micro-economic effects of these decisions. Throughout the book, Martin Chick pays particular attention to the level, pattern and quality of fixed capital investment. At the same time, there is a continuous concern with the struggle between politicians, economists and industrialists over the mix of pricing mechanisms and administrative orders which were to be used in this period. This struggle permeated all discussions over matters such as the organisation of nationalised industries, the monopoly structure of nationalised industries, the allocation of resources and the promotion of higher productivity. The author also asks what impact, if any, economic planning had on the productivity performance of the UK economy.

Book Rebuilding Britain s Blitzed Cities

Download or read book Rebuilding Britain s Blitzed Cities written by Catherine Flinn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-27 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many British cities were devastated by bombing during the Second World War and faced stark economic dilemmas concerning reconstruction planning and implementation after 1945. How did politicians, civil servants and local authorities manage to produce the cities we live in today? Rebuilding Britain's Blitzed Cities examines the underlying processes and pressures, especially financial and bureaucratic, which shaped postwar urbanism in Britain. Catherine Flinn integrates architectural planning with in-depth economic and political analyses of Britain's blitzed cities for the first time. She examines early reconstruction arrangements, the postwar economic apparatus and the challenges of postwar physical planning across the country, while providing insightful case studies from the cities of Hull, Exeter and Liverpool. By addressing the ideology versus the reality of reconstruction in postwar Britain, Rebuilding Britain's Blitzed Cities highlights the importance of economic and political factors for understanding the British postwar built environment.

Book British Railways 1948 73

Download or read book British Railways 1948 73 written by T. R. Gourvish and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 1690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1986, this is a business history of the first twenty-five years of nationalised railways in Britain. Commissioned by the British Railways Board and based on the Board's extensive archives, it fully analyses the dynamics of nationalised industry management and the complexities of the vital relationship with government. After exploring the origins of nationalisation, the book deals with the organisation, financial performance, investment and commercial policies of the British Transport Commission (1948-2), Railway Executive (1948-53) and British Railways Board (1963-73). Calculations of profit and loss, investment, and productivity are provided on a consistent basis for 1948-73. This business history thus represents a major contribution not only to the debate about the role of the railways in a modern economy but also to that concerning the nationalised industries, which have proved to be one of the most enduring problems of the British economy since the war.
