Download or read book Control of Energy Metabolism written by Britton Chance and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control of Energy Metabolism: A Colloquium of the Johnson Research Foundation focuses on the processes, reactions, and approaches involved in the control of energy metabolism. The selection first offers information on the respiratory chain as a model for metabolic control in multi-enzyme systems, dynamics and control in cellular reactions, and computer-based analysis of biochemical data. The text then explores purification and properties of rabbit skeletal muscle phosphofructokinase; multiple forms of heart phosphofructokinase; and mechanisms of inhibition and activation of phosphofructokinase in Novikoff ascites tumor cells. Discussions focus on the properties of purified phosphofructokinase; effect of heart extracts on reactivation of phosphofructokinase; active and inactive forms of phosphofructokinase; and effect of hexose phosphate and adenylic nucleotides on reactivation of phosphofructokinase. The manuscript takes a look at enzyme and metabolite profiles; coordinated stimulation of hexokinase and phosphofructokinase by phosphate in a reconstituted system of glycolysis; control of hexokinase in ascites tumor glycolysis; and cation flux across the mitochondrial membrane as a possible pacemaker of tissue metabolism. The selection is a vital reference for biochemists and researchers interested in the control of energy metabolism.

Book Cellular Energy Metabolism and Its Regulation

Download or read book Cellular Energy Metabolism and Its Regulation written by Daniel E. Atkinson and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cellular Energy Metabolism and Its Regulation examines the metabolic and molecular aspects of living organisms. Beginning with a discussion of evolutionary design and its close analogy with human design, it emphasizes the notion that evolution is a process of functional design, and that the characteristics of an organism, whether morphological or molecular, were selected because of functional advantage to the organism's ancestors. Thus, the study of an enzyme, a reaction, or a sequence can be biologically relevant only if its position in the hierarchy of function is kept in mind. This book dea ...

Book Cellular Energy Metabolism and its Regulation

Download or read book Cellular Energy Metabolism and its Regulation written by Bozzano G Luisa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 306 pages. This book deals with some aspects of metabolism from that point of view. The key concepts discussed include the conservation of solvent capacity and energy; functional stoichiometric coupling and metabolic prices; adenylate control and the adenylate energy charge; aspects of enzyme behavior that appear to be related to metabolic control; interactions between metabolic sequences; and the adenylate energy charge in intact cells. This book was designed for graduate students in biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, and related fields. However, it may also be useful to senior undergraduate students and more advanced workers who have a direct or peripheral interest in energy metabolism. It assumes a general familiarity with the material covered in a standard biochemistry textbook as well as some knowledge of such related areas as genetics.

Book Sensory and Metabolic Control of Energy Balance

Download or read book Sensory and Metabolic Control of Energy Balance written by Wolfgang Meyerhof and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades, the prevalence of obesity has dramatically increased in western and westernized societies. Its devastating health consequences include hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, or diabetes and make obesity the second leading cause of unnecessary deaths in the USA. As a consequence, obesity has a strong negative impact on the public health care systems. Recently emerging scienti?c insight has helped understanding obesity as a complex chronic disease with multiple causes. A multileveled gene–environment interaction appears to involve a substantial number of susceptibility genes, as well as associations with low physical activity levels and intake of high-calorie, low-cost, foods. Unfor- nately, therapeutic options to prevent or cure this disease are extremely limited, posing an extraordinary challenge for today’s biomedical research community. Obesity results from imbalanced energy metabolism leading to lipid storage. Only detailed understanding of the multiple molecular underpinnings of energy metabolism can provide the basis for future therapeutic options. Numerous aspects of obesity are currently studied, including the essential role of neural and endocrine control circuits, adaptive responses of catabolic and anabolic pathways, metabolic fuel sensors, regulation of appetite and satiation, sensory information processing, transcriptional control of metabolic processes, and the endocrine role of adipose tissue. These studies are predominantly fuelled by basic research on mammalian models or clinical studies, but these ?ndings were paralleled by important insights, which have emerged from studying invertebrate models.

Book Energy Metabolism and the Regulation of Metabolic Processes in Mitochondria

Download or read book Energy Metabolism and the Regulation of Metabolic Processes in Mitochondria written by Myron Mehlman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy Metabolism and the Regulation of Metabolic Processes in Mitochondria contains papers presented at the 1972 symposium on metabolic regulation, held at the University of Nebraska Medical School in Omaha, Nebraska. The contributors provide alternative views and ideas in some aspects of metabolic regulation directly concerned with mitochondrial function. Separating 16 papers into chapters, this book first discusses the general aspects of control of the biological energy regulation and the kinetic and thermodynamic control of mitochondrial electron transport and energy coupling. It then covers significant topics on citric acid cycle, including its replenishment and depletion; anion transport and regulation; dynamics and substrate compartmentation; and feedback control. Other chapters examine the mechanisms of gluconeogenesis, lipogenesis, redox reaction, and phosphorylation in the mitochondria. Discussions on hormonal regulation of selected enzyme system directly related to mitochondrial function are provided in the concluding chapters. Biochemists, physiologists, pharmacologists, physicians, researchers, and all others interested in the concepts of mitochondrial function will find this book of great value.

Book Neural Regulation of Metabolism

Download or read book Neural Regulation of Metabolism written by Qi Wu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systemically describes the mechanisms underlying the neural regulation of metabolism. Metabolic diseases, including obesity and its associated conditions, currently affect more than 500 million people worldwide. Recent research has shown that the neural regulation of metabolism is a central mechanism that controls metabolic status physiologically and pathophysiologically. The book first introduces the latest studies on the neural and cellular mechanisms of hypothalamic neurons, hypothalamic glial cells, neural circuitries, cellular signaling pathways, and synaptic plasticity in the control of appetite, body weight, feeding-related behaviors and metabolic disorders. It then summarizes the humoral mechanisms by which critical adipocyte-derived hormones and lipoprotein lipase regulate lipid and glucose metabolism, and examines the role of the hypothalamus-sympathetic nerve, a critical nerve pathway from CNS to peripheral nervous system (PNS), in the regulation of metabolism in multiple tissues/organs. Furthermore, the book discusses the functions of adipose tissue in energy metabolism. Lastly, it explores dietary interventions to treat neural diseases and some of the emerging technologies used to study the neural regulation of metabolism. Presenting cutting-edge developments in the neural regulation of metabolism, the book is a valuable reference resource for graduate students and researchers in the field of neuroscience and metabolism.

Book Cardiac Energy Metabolism in Health and Disease

Download or read book Cardiac Energy Metabolism in Health and Disease written by Gary D. Lopaschuk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-22 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heart has a very high energy demand but very little energy reserves. In order to sustain contractile function, the heart has to continually produce a large amount of ATP. The heart utilizes free fatty acids mainly and carbohydrates to some extent as substrates for making energy and any change in this energy supply can seriously compromise cardiac function. It has emerged that alterations in cardiac energy metabolism are a major contributor to the development of a number of different forms of heart disease. It is also now known that optimizing energy metabolism in the heart is a viable and important approach to treating various forms of heart disease. Cardiac Energy Metabolism in Health and Disease describes the research advances that have been made in understanding what controls cardiac energy metabolism at molecular, transcriptional and physiological levels. It also describes how alterations in energy metabolism contribute to the development of heart dysfunction and how optimization of energy metabolism can be used to treat heart disease. The topics covered include a discussion of the effects of myocardial ischemia, diabetes, obesity, hypertrophy, heart failure, and genetic disorders of mitochondrial oxidative metabolism on cardiac energetics. The treatment of heart disease by optimizing energy metabolism is also discussed, which includes increasing overall energy production as well as increasing the efficiency of energy production and switching energy substrate preference of the heart. This book will be a valuable source of information to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and investigators in the field of experimental cardiology as well as biochemists, physiologists, pharmacologists, cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons and other health professionals.
