Book Control of bracken and the restoration of heathland V Effects of bracken control treatments on the rhizome and its relationship with frond performance

Download or read book Control of bracken and the restoration of heathland V Effects of bracken control treatments on the rhizome and its relationship with frond performance written by R H. Marrs and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. The effect of three bracken control treatments on the rhizome system of bracken (Pteridum aquilinum (L.) Kuhn) at Cavenham and Weeting Heaths in Breckland was assessed. Control treatments included cutting once and twice yearly between 1978 and 1990, and spraying the herbicide asulam at the recommended rate (4.4 kg a.i. ha-1) in 1978 and 1985. In addition, the effect of continuous treatment was compared with plots in which bracken control ceased after 6 years. The effects on rhizome biomass and length, numbers of active and dormant buds, and starch and soluble carbohydrate concentrations were measured. 2. Cutting twice yearly was the most effective treatment, but rhizomes persisted even after 12 years of continous treatment. Cutting once yearly and applying asulam gave intermediate reductions in all rhizome variables. 3. Where bracken control ceased there was a relatively rapid increase in all measures of rhizome performance. At Cavenham Heath, remission for 4 years increased the starch levels in rhizomes, and after 6 years increased all rhizome measures. At Weeting Heath all measures were significantly increased 5 years after control treatments ceased. 4. Regression analyses showed that the majority of the variation in summer frond performance (0.39-0.75) could be explained by rhizome biomass. At both sites amounts of starch and carbohydrate in the rhizome, and at Weeting the above-ground grass biomass and total bud number, improved the fit of some equations. 5. Some earlier published data for Weeting Heath were used to estimate rates of rhizome depletion and recovery. Extrapolation from these results suggested that it would take (a) a further 8-34 years to eradicate bracken depending on treatment, and (b) between 9 years (for the cut once yearly and asulam treatments) and 62 years (for the cut twice yearly treatment) for the bracken rhizome system to recover its starting biomass. Moreover, a large frond biomass would occur before the rhizome system recovered com.

Book Heathland seedbanks under bracken Pteridium aquilinum L Kuhn and their importance for re vegetation after bracken control

Download or read book Heathland seedbanks under bracken Pteridium aquilinum L Kuhn and their importance for re vegetation after bracken control written by R J. Pakeman and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Great Britain, the regeneration of heathland and moorland plant communities after bracken control is slow and variable. Successful restoration depends on the availability of seed and the provision of suitable regeneration niches, as well as on the expansion of the plants previously present underneath the bracken canopy. This study investigates the availability of the seed resource of heathland species and its distribution, both in relation to increasing time since bracken invasion and with respect to its presence in litter or mineral soil. Calluna vulgaris was found to be the predominant species that germinated from the soil and litter beneath bracken at the sites studied. It appeared in greatest numbers from samples taken outside and at the edge of the bracken patch; numbers decreased deeper into the patch. Land which has been under bracken for a considerable period (>50 years) is likely to have a very reduced seedbank so that some form of propagule introduction, as well as litter disturbance, may be needed to speed up regeneration. On sites which have been invaded by bracken more recently, it is likely that litter incorporation into the soil would conserve the seed resource, whereas burning or litter removal would remove a significant proportion of that seed resource.

Book A study of the restoration of heathland on successional sites

Download or read book A study of the restoration of heathland on successional sites written by R J (Ruth) Mitchell and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. Lowland heaths are high-profile ecosystems for conservation action in Britain, but many areas have been invaded by Betula spp., Pinus sylvestris, Pteridium aquilinum and Rhododendron ponticum. As succession occurs on heaths, changes occur in both the vegetation and the soil chemical properties of the site. 2. Nine heathland sites in the Poole Basin area of Dorset were studied, where management of successional sites to restore heathland had occurred. The efficacy of heathland restoration in terms of both the vegetation and the soil chemical properties was assessed. 3. The management had allowed many heathland species to establish and the majority of sites to start to become similar to the neighbouring heathland. The reversion of increased soil nutrients was found to be more problematic, with levels of ammonium-nitrogen, phosphorus, pH, calcium and magnesium remaining greater than those of the heathland soils. 4. The vegetation and soil data were analysed using CANOCO (canonical correspondence analysis) and were then used to test four hypothetical models that related changes in biotic factors (vegetation) and abiotic variables (soil nutrients) following management to the success of the restoration of heathland on successional sites. 5. A second CANOCO analysis was carried out in which the managed sites were treated as passive samples. This model was used to measure the distances between the heath, successional and managed sites. These distances provided measures of management success and the resilience of the treated late-successional ecosystem. 6. The successional species present before management affected the success of reversion; management of Pinus sylvestris sites was generally more successful than management of others sites, especially those invaded by Betula. The most significant effect of different management techniques resulted from litter-stripping, which reduced the nutrients available and improved and accelerated the success of reversion.
