Book excerpt: Manual flight control system design for fighter aircraft is one of the most demanding problems in automatic control. Fighter aircraft dynamics generally have highly coupled uncertain and nonlinear dynamics. Multivariable control design techniques offer a solution to this problem. Robust Multivariable Flight Control provides the background, theory and examples for full envelope manual flight control system design. It gives a versatile framework for the application of advanced multivariable control theory to aircraft control problems. Two design case studies are presented for the manual flight control of lateral/directional axes of the VISTA-F-16 test vehicle and an F-18 trust vectoring system. They demonstrate the interplay between theory and the physical features of the systems.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes the implementation of Yao's adaptive robust control to an aircraft control system. This control law is implemented as a means to maintain stability and tracking performance of the aircraft in the face of failures and changing aerodynamic response. The control methodology is implemented as an outer loop controller to an aircraft under nonlinear dynamic inversion control. The adaptive robust control methodology combines the robustness of sliding mode control to all types of uncertainty with the ability of adaptive control to remove steady state errors. A performance measure is developed in to reflect more subjective qualities a pilot would look for while flying an aircraft. Using this measure, comparisons of the adaptive robust control technique with the sliding mode and adaptive control methodologies are made for various failure conditions. Each control methodology is implemented on a full envelope, high fidelity simulation of the F-15 IFCS aircraft as well as on a lower fidelity full envelope F-5A simulation. Adaptive robust control is found to exhibit the best performance in terms of the introduced measure for several different failure types and amplitudes.

The results of that design challenge, presented at the GARTEUR Specialists' Workshop in Toulouse, France in April 1997, are reported here. Two flight control benchmarks are considered, based on the automatic landing phase of a large cargo aircraft and on the control of a military aircraft. Methods applied include: classical control; multi-objective optimisation; eigenstructure assignment; modal multi-model approach; LQ, Lyapunov and H¿-techniques; ¿-synthesis; nonlinear dynamic inversion; robust inverse dynamics estimation; model predictive control and following; and fuzzy control. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to design an effective nonlinear flight control system that only uses elevon to control the flying-wing UAV and to design the guidance law that can track the specified trajectory. The nonlinear dynamic inversion technique is adopted for this control system design. It can effectively control the roll rate and pitch rate of the aircraft and meet the design requirement of the desired dynamics generated to satisfy certain flying qualities. The thesis also developed an infinite-horizon LQR based three-dimensional adaptive optimal guidance law to track the designated flight path. Finally, computer simulations were successfully demonstrated to show that the proposed control law and guidance law can control the flying-wing UAV track the designated trajectory effectively.
