Book Control and Prevention of American Foulbrood in Honey Bees

Download or read book Control and Prevention of American Foulbrood in Honey Bees written by Sandra Rosa Fuselli and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American foulbrood (AFB) is a severe bacterial disease that affects larvae of honey bees (Apis mellifera). The causative agent is the spore forming bacteria Paenibacillus larvae. The use of antibiotics has led to the appearance of resistant bacterial strains and residues in beehive products. Nowadays, antibiotics are legally banned in several countries, and the affected colonies have to be destroyed by burning the hives. Therefore, the development of alternative therapeuctic methods for the control and prevention of AFB is necessary. The present monograph reviews the traditional methods used for the control of AFB, and the natural strategies based on the application of essential oils, plant extracts, propolis, royal jelly, non-conventional natural molecules, bacteria and bacteriocines, assessed in vitro and in vivo for the prevention and control of P. larvae. This book also discusses the experimental data achieved from these studies, and intends to be a starting point for future research in the field.

Book Honey Bee Pests and Diseases

Download or read book Honey Bee Pests and Diseases written by Robert Owen and published by Exisle Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honey Bee Pests and Diseases provides up-to-date information on the management of honey bee diseases found globally, not just in the U.S., Europe, or Australia. Of particular interest are the explanations of how pathogens affect honey bees. This facet of diseases is usually left out of honey bee disease books. Written in an easy to understand way, and richly illustrated with photographs and diagrams, chapters cover integrated pest management (IPM), epidemiology, viruses, brood diseases, mites, parasites, as well as other problems a colony might face. The book is largely based on the Ph.D. research of Dr. Robert Owen, who studied the effect of bee diseases in Australia and overseas with particular reference to Varroa. Both Prof. Jean-Pierre Scheerlinck and Prof. Mark Stevenson have extensive and well-recognized experience in honey bee research.

Book Prevention and Control of American Foulbrood in South America with Essential Oils

Download or read book Prevention and Control of American Foulbrood in South America with Essential Oils written by Pablo Gimenez Martinez and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American foulbrood (AFB) is the most severe bacterial disease that affects honey bees, having a nearly cosmopolitan distribution. AFB,Äôs causative agent is Paenibacillus larvae. AFB kills infected honey bee larvae; however, it eventually leads to the collapse of the entire colony when left untreated. The infection takes place by the ingestion of the spores with the food provided by adult worker bees to the larvae. In South America (SA) the disease was first described in 1989¬†in Argentina, constituting the first sanitary challenge for beekeepers to overcome. Prevention and control measures of AFB in SA countries generally include vigilance for early diagnosis, isolation of apiaries with cases of AFB, and multiplication of healthy colonies with hygienic queens, among others. The extensive use of tetracycline hydrochloride in Argentina has led to the development of resistant P. larvae isolates. In this context, the development of alternative and effective methods for the control and prevention of AFB disease is crucial. Currently, alternative strategies for the prevention and treatment of AFB are being studied, mainly based on essential oils.

Book The Control of European Foulbrood

Download or read book The Control of European Foulbrood written by Everett Franklin Phillips and published by . This book was released on 1918 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "European foulbrood is a disease of the brood of bees which has caused great losses to American beekeepers. It was first recognized as a distinct disease in the United States by New York beekeepers in 1894, but it has probably been present in the United States for a long time. It is important that the beekeeper know whether European or American foulbrood is in his apiary, for the two do not respond to the same treatment. In European foulbrood control the most important step is to prevent the entrance of the disease by keeping all colonies strong and by having all stock resistant to the disease. This can be done successfully even though the disease is in the neighborhood. In case, through failure to take all precautions, the disease does enter, there are certain practices by which the disease can be readily eliminated, but all of these must be sued with care. The facts about the disease on which the preventive and remedial measures are based are discussed in this bulletin." -- p. [2]

Book Honey Bee Diseases and Pests

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control of diseases and pests of honey bees is one of most challenging tasks in improving quality of honey and honey bee by-products, especially for the beekeepers in developing countries. This publication describes common diseases and pests of honey bees and their importance and provides a practical guide to the basic technology available to beekeepers for their control and prevention.

Book Control of American Foulbrood

Download or read book Control of American Foulbrood written by Floyd B. Paddock and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Of all the diseases that attack the honeybee, the most destructive is American foulbrood. This disease attacks the developing bee -- the 'brood.' American foulbrood has been known for centuries. But even so, it continues to kill bees. May beekeepers don't recognize the disease or know how to fight it. Complete eradication of American foulbrood is impossible, but proper control measures can keep it at a minimum. Every beekeeper, therefore, should know its signs and its control so that he can attack the disease in its early stages. Foulbrood starts in a small way in a colony. If not checked, it continues until it destroys the entire colony. The colony dies because few young bees are produced to maintain the adult population. Even with the death of a colony a beekeeper may not learn the cause is foulbrood. These colony deaths are often blamed on winterkilling and wax moth." -- p. [571]
