Book Mechanisms of Range Expansion and Removal of Mesquite in Desert Grasslands of the Southwestern United States

Download or read book Mechanisms of Range Expansion and Removal of Mesquite in Desert Grasslands of the Southwestern United States written by Thomas B. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last 150 years, two species of mesquite trees in the Southwestern United States have become increasingly common in what formerly was desert grassland. These trees have spread from nearby watercourses onto relatively xeric upland areas, decreasing rangeland grass production. Management attempts to limit or reverse this spread have been largely unsuccessful. This paper reviews studies regarding mesquite natural history and management strategies, emphasizing studies published during the past decade. Mesquite possess a deep root system and are capable of fixing atmospheric N, rendering them capable of accessing resources unavailable to other plants in open rangeland. Their seeds, which remain viable for decades, have a hard exocarp and require scarification before germination. Consumption by cattle provides a means of scarification and seed dispersal, and is a major factor contributing to the spread of mesquite in open rangelands. Increases in atmospheric CO2 and winter precipitation during the past century also contribute to enhanced seed germination. Removal techniques have included herbicides, prescribed burning, grazing reduction, and mechanical removal. For increased effectiveness of these techniques, management goals must be clearly articulated; these goals include complete removal, no removal, and limited removal. Of these, limited removal appears the most feasible, using an initial herbicide application followed by periodic prescribed burning.

Download or read book The Magnificent Mesquite written by Ken E. Rogers and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive guide to the versatile mesquite tree covers its various species and many uses, from food to furniture to rangeland management. A reliable source of food and shelter even in the severest droughts, the mesquite tree sustained American Indians in the Southwest for centuries. Today, mesquite is popular for barbecuing, woodworking, furniture making, flooring, sculpture, jewelry, and food products ranging from honey to jelly and syrup. Even ranchers, who once fought to eradicate mesquite, have come to value its multiple uses on well-managed rangeland. In this accessible volume, one of the world's leading authorities on mesquite presents a wealth of information about its natural history and commercial, agricultural, and woodworking uses. Ken Rogers describes the life cycle, species, and wide distribution of the mesquite, which is native or naturalized not only in the Southwest and Mexico, but also in India, Africa, Australia, South America, and Hawaii. Rogers discusses the many consumer and woodworker uses of mesquite, even giving instructions for laying a mesquite wood floor and making mesquite bean jelly. He also looks into the ways that people are using mesquite in nature, from rangeland management in the Southwest to desertification prevention in arid countries.

Book Economic Comparisons of Alternatives for Improving Honey Mesquite infested Rangeland

Download or read book Economic Comparisons of Alternatives for Improving Honey Mesquite infested Rangeland written by Robert E. Whitson and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economy responses to honey mesquite control were estimated for each of the major land resouce regions in Texas. The results pertain to individual ranch firms, and cannot be extrapolated to the total industry without ascertaining the impact of potential supply/demand shifts on cattle prices. The economic analysis utilized a net present value and capital budgeting techniques for a 20-year planning period to estimate annual rate of return (internal rate of return), net present value for a 9 percent discount rate, and net cash flow for alternative mesquite control practices. Net cash flows were expressed in constant 1978 dollars and were developed for alternative weaned beef price scenarios of 34 cents to 54 cents per pound over the 20-year planning horizon. Economic results varied considerably among and within vegetation regions. The variation was a function of range site potential, degree of honey mesquite infestation at the time of treatment, and the control alternative selected. Aerial application of 2,4,5-T consistently produced the highest annual rates of return, regardless of vegetation region. Based on the highest rates of return from each vegetation region, the unweighted average annual rate for return was 15.9 percent. When 2,4,5-T was eliminated as potential control measure, dicamba produced the highest annual rate of return (11.4 percent), approximately one-third less than that from 2,4,5-T. The simple average of the highest average annual rate of return from each resouce region for non-herbicide treatments was 5.7 percent, the average cost of mechanical methods, based on 1978 dollas, would have to be reduced by approximately 50 percent to generate a 9 percent annual rate of return. Assuming long term rainfall patterns and average cattle prices, the average length of time required to recover all investment capital for treatment and additional livestock with 2,4,5-T (8.5 years) was about half that for the "nest-best" herbicide treatment (16 years). Averaged (unweighted) across all resouce regions, the net annual cash flows increased 2.25 dollars per acre from the "next best" non-herbicide alternative. However, it was not possible to identify any single "best" honey mesquite control practices since producer preference is a critical criterion for treatment selection. While aerial application of 2,4,5-T produced the highest annual rates of return, a producer could logically select another practice if it met his minimum rate of return criterion, capital was not limiting, and the prectice higher annual net cash flows than 2,4,5-T. Selection of a practice other than aerial application of 2,4,5-T necessitates greater investment capital requirements. Ranchers typically have pay-back periods which are shorter than pay out periods for brush control. Consequently, as investment capital requirements increase, pay out periods increase, thereby increasing cash flow deficits. Such situations require a transfer of cash from other sources to meet these deficits. Small producers (93 percent of all Texas ranch producers have 200 or fewer cows) have fewer cash sources (because of cash consumption requirements within the ranch firm) to offset an incresing cash flow deficit than do larger producers. No industry supply shifts were evaluated in this study. However, it can be anticipated that if brush management becomes more expensive, fewer acres will be treated. Over time, this could result in a reduction in the supply of beef which will cause prices to increase. The net result on beef prices will depend on the nature of the supply shift relative to demand characteristics for beef.

Book Mesquite Control

Download or read book Mesquite Control written by Keith Wesley Duncan and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa Torr.) is a shrub or small tree 3 to 12 feet tall. Mesquite has always been a part of the plant community in New Mexico, but was historically confined primarily to water courses and other moist sites. The introduction of domestic livestock, increased control of wildfire, and droughts all gave woody plants a competitive advantage and resulted in changes in rangeland plant composition. Efforts to control mesquite will not produce lasting results without a commitment to sound grazing management. If overgrazing occurs, mesquite or other undesirable vegetation will return to dominate that site. When selecting a mesquite control method, consider the presence of other undesirable plants. Removal of one species can result in the rapid increase of another. As a result, soil moisture does not become available for desirable species. Follow-up treatments on the other undesirable plants may be necessary after mesquite control.
