Book Contributions une histoire du catholicisme Papaut Aquitaine France et Outre mer

Download or read book Contributions une histoire du catholicisme Papaut Aquitaine France et Outre mer written by CHAMP Nicolas, LAUX Claire et MOISSET Jean-Pierre (dir.) and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2013-05-14 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to the role traditionally fulfilled by secular rulers, the pope has been perceived as an individual person existing in a body subject to decay and death, yet at the same time a corporeal representation of Christ and the Church, eternity and salvation. Using an array of evidence from the eleventh through the fifteenth centuries, Agostino Paravicini- Bagliani addresses this paradox. He studies the rituals, metaphors, and images of the pope's body as they developed over time and shows how they resulted in the expectation that the pope's body be simultaneously physical and metaphorical. Also included is a particular emphasis on the thirteenth century when, during the pontificate of Boniface VIII (1294-1303), the papal court became the focus of medicine and the natural sciences as physicians devised ways to protect the pope's health and prolong his life. Masterfully translated from the Italian, this engaging history of the pope's body provides a new perspective for readers to understand the papacy, both historically and in our own time.

Download or read book The Encounter of Eastern Christianity with Early Islam written by David Thomas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this book is the early encounters between Christianity and Islam in the eastern provinces of the Byzantine Empire and in Persia from the beginnings of Islam in Mecca to the time of the Abbasids in Bagdad. The contributions in this volume deal with crucial subjects of political and theological dialogue and controversy that characterized the varying responses of the Christian communities in the Byzantine Eastern provinces to the Islamic conquest and its subsequent impact on Byzantine society and history. This volume opens up new research perspectives surrounding the confrontation of Christianity with the early theological and political development of Islam. The present publication emphasizes the importance of the study of the beginnings and the foundations of the relations between the two religions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an examination of how and why medieval kings declared certain properties immune from their own power. The author argues that they were not compelled by weakness, but rather by a need to show strength and reaffirm status and exercise authority, and that we need a new understanding of the political and social exchanges of the period. The declaration of immunities were really instruments used by kings and bishops to forge alliances with the noble families and monastic centres which were the essence of their authority.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how Calvin's uncompromising stance on sacred images gained favor throughout Europe and was increasingly seen in the years between 1550 and 1600 as the unavoidable culmination of the Sola Scriptura principle. It also documents in detail how Catholic doctrine evolved to counteract the radical positions of Calvinism and how this doctrine translated through pastoral action into the new artistic trends - in both architecture and painting - which dominated the Seventeenth century.

Book excerpt: In the ever increasing volume of Byzantine Studies in recent years there seems to be one very apparent void, namely, the history and culture of the Byzantine Jewry, its presence and impact on the surrounding convoluted Byzantine world between Late Antiquity until the conquest of Byzantium (1453). With the now classic but dated studies by Joshua Starr and Andrew Sharf, the collective volume at hand is an attempt to somewhat fill in this void. The articles assembled in this volume are penned by leading scholars in the field. They present bird's eye views of the cultural history of the Jewish Byzantine minority, alongside a wide array of surveys and in-depth studies of various topics. These topics pertain to the dialectics of the religious, literary, economic and visual representation world of this alien minority within its surrounding Byzantine hegemonic world.

On an extremely hot, desert planet, a race of monstrous lizards have developed a complex civilization. When an Earth colony's emergency landing becomes permanent, the colonists baptize the new planet Mars IIand begin to create their own civilization. After several encounters, both lizards and humans demonstrate a willingness to understand each other. But all too quickly, their relationships deteriorate beyond remedy... despite the best intentions of individuals from both sides. Everything on the colonized planet is hostile to humans: the heat, rarity of edible food and scarcity of water. Struggling to survive on their own, a confrontation with the planets natural inhabitants seems inevitable. Culture shock has sunk in - violence and horror reign and not even the most devoted pacifists can prevent the worst from happening.
