Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions Toward the Improvement of Agriculture in Nova Scotia: With Practical Hints on the Management and Improvement of Live Stock, Compiled From Youatt, Johnston, Young, Peters, Stephens,& C It makes the soil warmer, by draining off the water which other wise would keep the ground cold by its evaporation. For this reason it enables the ground to be worked earlier in spring and later in autumn, and renders the growth of crops more rapid. It tends to prevent the surface from being too much washed by rain, as it enables the water to penetrate the soil, carrying downward the substance of rich manures, instead of washing it to lower levels. It thus saves the riches of the soil from waste. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Maritime Rights Movement Univ Microfilm

Download or read book Maritime Rights Movement Univ Microfilm written by Ernest R. Forbes and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1979-01-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first full account of a major social and political movement of the interwar years in Canada: the campaign for "Maritime Rights" which erupted in the Atlantic provinces after World War I. Ernest R. Forbes traces the history of the movement from its origins in the decline in relative status and influence of the Maritimes that accompanied the rise of the West and the growing dominance of the Central Canadian metropolises. Maritimers saw their political influence reduced, the underpinnings of their economy - especially in the critical areas of tariffs, freight rates, and subsidies - whittled away, and Canada defined in terms that seemed to exclude them. Adopting a strategy characteristic of the progressive movements of the period, they attempted through organization and agitation to restore their position. Farmers, fishermen, manufacturers, and organized labour articulated their demands through the provincial press, boards of trade, union locals, educational conferences, and mass delegations to Ottawa. Professor Forbes challenges traditional assumptions in his emphasis upon a vigorous Maritime progressivism that transcended party affiliations. All the political parties tried to use the protest movement, but none had created it, nor had it a specific founder or leader. The agitiation was in fact a spontaneous expression of the economic and social frustrations of the Maritime people. Although their efforts were largely defeated by the conflicting interests of stronger regions, and by the King government's adoitness in defusing protest through a policy of study and delay, the author believes that the aroused Maritimers had succeeded in establishing their difficulties in the public's mind as a national problem.

Book The Spirit of Industry and Improvement

Download or read book The Spirit of Industry and Improvement written by Daniel Samson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2008 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of improvement permeated social and political discourse in colonial Canadian society. From agriculture to building roads and mills to defining correct habits and behaviour, Nova Scotia's improvers embraced the ideals of innovation and progress and promoted modern programs of government. Daniel Samson moves Nova Scotia and rural Canada from the colonial margins to the heart of a modernizing society, showing how the countryside functioned as a centre of change and innovation. He connects a fascinating spectrum of sites, actors, and strategies and links settlement, farm-building, rural market formation, and early industrialization to the heterogeneous strategies of families and state actors, the rural poor, and rural elites. The Spirit of Industry and Improvement presents the first-ever overview of rural colonial Nova Scotia and provides compelling insights into the formation of modern liberal practices of government and self-government in British North America.
