Book Contributions to Two Problems in Space Independent Nuclear Reactor Dynamics

Download or read book Contributions to Two Problems in Space Independent Nuclear Reactor Dynamics written by and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Submitted to Massachusetts Inst. of Tech., Dept. of Chemical Engineering, Cambridge. Analytical and experimental studies on the describing function of a nuclear reactor and analytical studies on the effect of a refiector on reactor dynamics were carried out. Earlier analytical work on the reactor describing function both at low and high power levels was substantially extended and clarified. Some of the earlier results on the high-power reactor describing function were shown to be incomplete or incorrect. Several IBM-650 programs were written to facilitate accurate calculation of the low- and high-power reactor describing function for a variety of reactor types, and illustrative calculations were presented. The analytical results for the low-power describing function were confirmed by pile-oscillator, frequency-response measurements in a small, enriched, plate-type, H/sub 2/Omoderated and -refiected reactor (the Spert-I P-18/ 19 reactor), for reactivity amplitudes up to 145 and for frequencies from 0.002 to 18.4 cps. A reflector-located, rotary, reactivity-oscillator mechanism of adjustable reactivity amplitude was used. Agreement between the experimental and theoretical describing-function results was shown to be better when a slightly modified version of Keepin and Wimett's U/sup 235/ fast-fission delayed- neutron data were used for the calculations than when Keepin and Wimett's thermal- fission data were used, regardless of the reactivity amplitude or the method of data handling. By means of tests with the neutron detector placed in various positions about the core periphery, the space and time variations of the neutron density, for a reactivity amplitude of 064 and frequencies up to 18.4 cps, were shown to be separable everywhere except in the immediate vicinity of the asymmetrically located oscillator. The prompt-neutron generation time was deduced from the experimental results and found to be in good agreement with results obtained in short-period, step-transient tests and in static, l/v-poison perturbation tests. Analysis of the effect of a reflector on reactor dynamics showed that, under appropriate conditions, the effective lifetime of a reflected reactor can become frequency-dependent at high frequencies, causing the reactor response to rapid reactivity changes to differ from that of an equivalent bare reactor having the same lifetime as the reflected reactor at criticality. Several aspects of this phenomenon were examined, and the results of a number of previously reported experiments illustrating this effect were summarized. (auth).

Book Mathematical methods in Nuclear reactor Dynamics

Download or read book Mathematical methods in Nuclear reactor Dynamics written by Ziya Akcasuh and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical Methods in Nuclear Reactor Dynamics covers the practical and theoretical aspects of point-reactor kinetics and linear and nonlinear reactor dynamics. The book, which is a result of the lectures given at the University of Michigan, is composed of seven chapters. The opening chapter of the book describes various physical phenomena influencing the temporal behavior of neutrons to provide insights into the physics of reactor dynamics and the interrelationships between various diverse phenomena. The text then presents a set of equations, called point kinetic equation, which describes the time behavior of the total power generated in the medium. The book also provides a short discussion on Gyftopoulos modification and Becker’s formulation. The next chapters explore the exact methods for solving the feedback-free point kinetic equations for a number of reactivity insertions and the validity of the various approximate methods of solution. The book also examines the derivation of models for a certain reactor type and briefly discusses the validity of these models in certain cases against experimental data. A chapter focuses on a concise presentation of the stability theory of linear systems with feedback. Lastly, the concepts of stability in nonlinear reactor systems and the criteria for asymptotic stability in the large as well as in a finite domain of initial disturbances are covered in the concluding chapter. The text is an ideal source for nuclear engineers and for those who have adequate background in reactor physics and operational and applied mathematics.

Book Neutron Response Analysis in Pulsed Coupled core Reactors

Download or read book Neutron Response Analysis in Pulsed Coupled core Reactors written by George C. Hopkins and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Los Alamos Coupled Reactor Experiment, some oscillatory deviations from the expected monotonic increase were observed in the rising portion of the passive core neutron density response. In the present study, a generalized multigroup point kinetics model is employed to analyze the experiment. Several approximations with respect to the number of energy groups, the existence of a reflector, and the between-core neutron distribution function were studied. For some approximations, anomalies similar to those experimentally noticed were observed in the passive core response.

Book Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology

Download or read book Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology written by Ernest J. Henley and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology, Volume 2 provides an authoritative, complete, coherent, and critical review of the nuclear industry. This book discusses the advances in the atomic energy field. Organized into six chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the concept of transfer function of a system. This text then examines the classic plant cycles for the water-cooled, liquid metal, and gas-cooled reactor concepts to pinpoint those points in cycle that require nuclear grade heat exchanger equipment. Other chapters consider heat exchanger, which is applied to the full spectrum of apparatus and equipment designed to facilitate the flow of heat from medium to medium. This book discusses as well the hardware characteristics and the resulting effects on reactor calculations. The final chapter deals with the effect of digital computers on nuclear reactor calculations and discusses some of the numerical methods used in nuclear reactor codes. This book is a valuable resource for design engineers and plant operating personnel.
