Book Contributions to the Study of Elliptical Words in Modern English Classic Reprint

Download or read book Contributions to the Study of Elliptical Words in Modern English Classic Reprint written by Karl Fritiof Sundén and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Study of Elliptical Words in Modern English The present study was originally meant to embrace a short survey of the various categories of elliptical words in Modern English and an examination of the elliptical phenomenon as revealed in them. But the vastness of the subject and the necessity of collecting and presenting a sufficient material made it an impera tive necessity to narrow down the scope of my study so as to embrace only one particular category of elliptical words. Still, the original plan has been adhered to, in as far as I have begun with an enquiry into the delimitation of ellipsis in general, and have made elliptical personal names, as illustrating phonological ellipsis, the subject of my study. This has been done in the vague hope of possibly finding an opportunity at some future date of dealing also with the remaining categories of elliptical words. I have even been forced to omit the latter part of my examination of elliptical personal names, though it is ready in ms. Throughout the book I have used the term Modern English (mne.) in the same sense as it is used by Dr. Sweet, z'. E. To signify the period of English from the beginning of the 16th century down to the present time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Contribution to the Study of Conversion in English

Download or read book A Contribution to the Study of Conversion in English written by Isabel Balteiro and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2006 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work intends to provide new insights on a controversial word-formation phenomenon or process known as conversion or zero-derivation. It offers a critical review of previous theories and approaches to this subject but it also attempts to provide a new definition, discusses the appropriateness of using one term or the other to name the phenomenon, and identifies its main characteristics. For doing so, it discusses issues such as whether (1.) the category or word-class change is a strictly necessary condition, (2.) priority is to be given to the syntactic function or rather to the change of word-class, and (3.) the result of the process is a derived word, two different and independent units or rather, one form with two clearly differentiated units. Moreover, this study delimits conversion versus other linguistic phenomena with apparently similar results (levelling, ellipsis, shortening, among others), and discusses its different types or classifications (partial and total conversion, and change of secondary word-class). The conclusion is that, despite the appearance of being a "jack-in-the-box" or a "dumping ground" in which any linguistic process involving two formally identical elements may be included, conversion can be both delimited and distinguished from other phenomena with (apparent) similar results. The book has been awarded the national prize "Leocadio Martín Mingorance" de Lengua y Lingüística inglesas (XII edición), the English Language and Linguistics prize "Leocadio Martín Mingorance" (12th edition). This prize is awarded by AEDEAN: Asociación Española de Estudios Anglo-norteamericanos (Spanish Association for English and American Studies).

Book Sociocultural Dimensions of Lexis and Text in the History of English

Download or read book Sociocultural Dimensions of Lexis and Text in the History of English written by Peter Petré and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-07-15 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters collected in this volume examine how the sociohistorical and cultural context may influence structural features of lexis and text types. Each paper pays particular attention to social ‘labels’ and attitudes (conservative, religious, ideological, endearing, or other), thereby focusing on their dynamic and historical dimension. Changes in these are analyzed in order to explain morphological, lexical, and textual changes that would otherwise be hard to account for. Together, they provide a varied window on the effect of historical versions of a dynamic society on lexis and text. Examining lexical and textual change in history from a sociocultural perspective teaches us a great deal – not just about the past, but it also makes us think about similar phenomena in the present, enhancing our knowledge about how universally human some of these phenomena are. This volume will be of great interest to (English) historical linguists, sociolinguists, and scholars of sociohistorical and cultural studies.
