Book Gems of the Centennial Exhibition Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gems of the Centennial Exhibition The history' of the Philadelphia Exposition evinced an admirable persistence in pushing it through, from its inception to its completion. Local enthusiasm, for a long time, was the sole motive power that drove its machinery. The assistance of the national Government and the sister States was given after a long period of distrust and neglect. This aid, if tardy, was in the end generous and hearty; and the enterprise advanced swiftly toward its consummation. The first recorded suggestion was that of Prof. John L. Campbell, of Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana, who, in a letter to the Hon. Morton mcmichael, then Mayor of Philadelphia, urged that the one-hundredth anniversary of the nation should be celebrated by an exhibition of the industries of all nations. This was submitted to leading citizens of Philadelphia, who decided that any action was, as yet, premature. In 1869 Prof. Campbell again wrote a letter, urging the matter with great earnestness, and the idea began to develop itself in a practical shape. Early in the following year the Franklin Institute, of Philadelphia, an institution devoted to the promotion of science and mechanics, took the initial steps by petitioning the municipal councils of the city to memorialize Congress on the subject - asking aid in establishing an international exhibition as the most suitable method of celebrating the centennial. Almost simultaneously with this the State Legislature passed a series of resolutions similar to those of the councils. In February, 1870, the Hon. William D. Kelley was the mouth-piece through which a joint memorial was presented to Congress, asking that an invitation, clothed with official power, should be issued to the nations of the world asking for their participation in the proposed exhibition. For a year the bill proposed by Mr. Daniel J. Mon'ill, the chairman of the House Committee on Manufactures, was strongly opposed for technical reasons, but finally passed in March, 1871, and received the signature of the President. It was successful, however, at the expense of the appropriation, which had been such a vital part. In virtue of its provisions, foreign nations were officially notified, and the Centennial Commission received existence by the appointment, on the part of the President, of two delegates from each State and Territory on the nomination of the Governors respectively. Book excerpt: Excerpt from International Exhibition, 1876: Reports of the President, Secretary, and Executive Committee, Together With the Journal of the Final Session of the Commission I have received from the United States Centennial Commission their final report, presenting a full exhibit of the result of the United States Centennial Celebration and Exhibition of 1876, as required by the Act of June 1, 1873. In transmitting this report for the consider ation of Congress, I express, I believe, the general judgment of the country, as well as my own, in assigning to this Exhibition a measure of success gratifying the pride and patriotism of our people, and full of promise to the great industrial and commercial interests of the country. The very ample and generous contributions which the foreign nations made to the splendor and usefulness of the Exhibition, and the cordiality with which their representatives took part in our national commemoration, deserve our profound acknowledgments. At this close of the great services rendered by the United States Centennial Commission and the Centennial Board of Finance, it gives me great pleasure to commend to your attention, and that of the people of the whole country, the laborious, faithful, and prosperous performance of their duties which have marked the administration of their respective trusts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Century, Its Fruits and Its Festival: Being a History and Description of the Centennial Exhibition, With a Preliminary Outline of Modern Progress A much longer period than six months would have been required for the thorough study of the Centennial display. But a far shorter one sufficed for the formation of sound and useful impressions. Well worth scrutiny with the microscope, it was still eloquent and in structive to the naked eye. He who ran, even, might read, if he ran often enough and on courses systematically laid out. The account here given and conclusions stated are the result of many visits 'de finitely planned and memoranda made on the spot. For both note and comment, it should be added, the writer is solely responsible. In no instance has he taken at second hand description or conclusion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial Contribution From the Maryland Historical Society: To the Centennial Celebration of the National Independence of the United States of America, July 4th, 1876 The Maryland Historical Society wishing to bring a proper offering to the first Centennial Celebration of our National Indedendence, resolved, for that purpose, to reprint a Journal of 9 Charles Carroll of Carrollton, of Maryland, signer of the Declaration of Independence. The original manuscript of this record is kept in the Archives of the Society as a precious gift from the descendants of its illustrious author. The Journal was written by Mr. Carroll, in 1716, during a journey to Canada with Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, and Samuel Chase of Maryland, members of Congress, and, - jointly with Mr. Carroll, - its delegated Commissioners to try the feeling, and, if possible, to stir up the Canadians. By the request of Congress the Reverend John Carroll, cousin of Charles Carroll of Carrollton, and afterwards, the first Roman Catholic Archbishop of the United States, accompanied these gentlemen on their grave and delicate errand. The undersigned were named by the Society to carry out its wishes; and with great respect, they offer this book as a patriotic memorial - showing that, at the end of one hundred years of National life, Maryland is loyal to the men and memories of 1776. It was here that I launched out in business for myself and I owe much to the pioneers who helped me to find myself. Sometimes I wish that I had spent fifty years here instead of five. By remaining here I would have gathered less of material things and less of stress and heartbreak. Book The Centennial of the University of Virginia

Download or read book The Centennial of the University of Virginia written by John Calvin Metcalf and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Centennial of the University of Virginia: 1819-1921; The Proceedings of the Centenary Celebration, May 31 to June 3, 1921 The University of Virginia was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson. The celebration of its one-hundredth anniversary was delayed from 1919 to 1921 because of disturbed world conditions following the Great War. Prior to the Centennial there appeared the monumental History of the University of Virginia, by Philip Alexander Bruce, LL.D., the notable offering of a distinguished alumnus and historian; and coincident with that event was published a volume of poems, The Enchanted Years, contributed in honor of the occasion by poets of America and Great Britain. Shortly before the Centennial Celebration, there was shown on the moving-picture screen in Virginia and other states a series of important events and noteworthy scenes in the history of the University from the days of Jefferson and Poe to the present. The following pages set forth in order the proceedings of that historic occasion which covered four days, May 31-June 3, 1921. Most of the addresses delivered, a few representative greetings, and the text of the Centennial Pageant are included, together with a number of illustrations which will make more vivid to the reader certain memorable scenes. While the volume is primarily a record of the Centennial Celebration, it is in a larger sense an interpretation of the spirit of an institution through a hundred years of service to State and Nation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial Celebration, July 2, 3, 4, 1916, Commemorative of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Granting of the First Charter, April 17th, 1816, to the Village of Peekskill House were held Councils of War, at which plans were perfected affecting not only the defences of the Highlands and West Point, but campaigns against New York and in the South. Arnold met Washington at the Bird sall House, renewed his request for West Point and received the commis sion, departing the next day to his command. I will not recite the whole story of the treason. It was a Peekskill boy, John Paulding, who had just os caped from the military prison in New York, who with two other West chester men, Williams and Van Wart, effected the capture of Andre near Dobbs Erry. There are few incidents connected with Arnold's treason and its failure which seem to indicate a special Providence watching over the liberties of America and frustrating the ingenuity, skill and machinations of its enemies.
