Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to Ophthalmology The safest, and therefore the best way to make the diagnosis in asthenopia is to record the data, as indicated in the six steps above, and to give the glass, or correction, which embodies the results of all the steps. As an extra precaution the observer should record the data of his ophthalmoscopic tests oofore he makes any glass tests. We have had a patient, a college student, come to our office wear ing minus elevens, which he had selected by the aid of an Optician as those with which he seemed to be able to see best, far and near, who turned out, after thorough saturation of his ciliary muscle with atropia, to be largely hypermetropic, so Titanic was his spasm of accommodation. We must not turn to'the fathers of ophthalmology in any spirit of abject submission to their dicta. We must show ourselves worthy of our parentage. We 'must cultivate-the same spirit of independent research which enabled them to do so much. They, by precept and example, bid us search for facts, and to use facts in a logical way. Luxation Of the eyeball is Of rare occurrence in exophthalmic goiter. While it is only an incident in the course of the disease, the treatment must be immediate and drastic or the effect on the vision may be most disastrous. Our knowledge of the aetiology Of the cardinal symptoms of exophthalmic goiter is still too indefinite to permit Of more than conjecture in regard to the causes Of the disease. But, assuming that congestion Of the blood-vessels plays a part in the exophthalmos, it may not be unreasonable to suggest that the lifting Of three hundred eighty-pound weights each day, as in the case reported, was one Of the contributing factors in the causation Of the extreme exophthalmos. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiological Optics: Being an Essay Contributed to the American Encyclopedia of Ophthalmology These four fundamental experimental facts as to the direction of rays Of light are comprehended in a general way in a Single law Often referred to as the principle of least path or Fermat's principle of least time. If a ray of light passes from a point A to a point B and suffers any number Of reflections and refractions, then the sum of the products of the index of refraction (n) Of each medium multiplied by the distance traversed (l) in it differs from a like sum for all other paths which are infinitely close to it by terms Of the second or higher order; i. E., the variation in the total paths, optically considered, approaches zero. This principle finds frequent and important appli cation in geometrical optics. The four fundamental laws above enumerated relate only to geometrical determinations of the prope gation of light and constitute, therefore, a sufficient basis for geo metrical Optics. We shall assume their validity and proceed to use them in the deductions Of ocular constants and data. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
