Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to Cuna Ethnography: Results of an Expedition to Panama and Colombia in 1947 From February to September 1947 the writer of these lines had the privilege of undertaking an expedition sponsored by the Ethno graphical Museum, Gothenburg, of which the goal was chiefly Panama and Colombia and during which I was accompanied by my wife Karin and my friend Nils M. Holmer, a linguist, and at that time associate professor in the University of Upsala. The collaboration between Dr. Holmer and myself had started already earlier, established by our common interest in the investigation of various aspects of the Cuna culture, and at the time of our departure from Gothenburg, on February 8, 1947, this collaboration had just borne fruit in the publication of a joint work, A! Ii-i gala or the Way of Alan, A [medicine Song from the Ciinas of Panama. As a practical study inter alias of the Cuna language would be of great interest to Holmer, who had already proved in a brilliant way his theoretical knowledge of this language by the publication of a Critical and Comparative Grammar of the Ciina Language, it gave me great satisfaction to learn that he, too, would be able to accept the offer to accompany us on the journey, after successful applications for material support on his behalf from The Viking Fund, Inc. In New York and the Sociedad sueco-hispano-a mericana in Gothenburg. The results of Holmer's linguistic investigations among the Cuna Indians will be published by him according to a more detailed account given in the preface to this work. I should like to mention, however, even at this moment, that he has placed his whole ex perience at disposal for Such parts of this work as pertain to his particular branch of science, for which I am very grateful to him. Book The Politics of Reproductive Ritual

Download or read book The Politics of Reproductive Ritual written by Jeffery M. Paige and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A welcome addition. They argue that rituals of reproduction in preindustrial societies are essentially political. In these societies, they say, men need to control the reproductive power of women in order to establish political power; where there is no law or central government, ritual is used as a way of gaining control. The type of ritual will vary, they conclude, according to the economic base of the society. . . .for those whoa re interested in the subject, this book is indispensable. Its thesis is challenging and the documentation is excellent. Paige and Paige have mad ean essential contribution to a long debate, and their theory is sure to stir new and lively controversy." --Science Digest This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Book Racial Experiments in Cuban Literature and Ethnography

Download or read book Racial Experiments in Cuban Literature and Ethnography written by Emily A. Maguire and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An important contribution to U.S.-Caribbean dialogues in the field of Afro-Diasporic literatures and cultures.”—Jossianna Arroyo, author of Travestismos culturales: literature y etnografía en Cuba y Brasil “Maguire’s close readings of women ethnographers like Lydia Cabrera and Zora Neale Hurston result in a very original approach to dealing with the topic of race and how it overlaps with the categories of gender. Outstanding work!”—James Pancrazio, author of The Logic of Fetishism: Alejo Carpentier and the Cuban Tradition "Ingeniously tells the story of the tensions between artist and ethnographer that inform the Cuban national narrative of the twentieth century. Racial Experiments in Cuban Literature and Ethnography is essential reading for a large audience of students and scholars alike within Caribbean, American, and African Diaspora studies."--Jaqueline Loss, author of Cosmopolitanisms and Latin America In the wake of independence from Spain in 1898, Cuba’s intellectual avant-garde struggled to cast their country as a modern nation. They grappled with the challenges presented by the postcolonial situation in general and with the location of blackness within a narrative of Cuban-ness in particular. In this breakthrough study, Emily Maguire examines how a cadre of writers reimagined the nation and re-valorized Afro-Cuban culture through a textual production that incorporated elements of the ethnographic with the literary. Singling out the work of Lydia Cabrera as emblematic of the experimentation with genre that characterized the age, Maguire constructs a series of counterpoints that place Cabrera’s work in dialogue with that of her Cuban contemporaries—including Fernando Ortiz, Nicolás Guillén, and Alejo Carpentier. An illuminating final chapter on Cabrera and Zora Neale Hurston widens the scope to contextualize Cuban texts within a hemispheric movement to represent black culture. Emily A. Maguire is associate professor of Spanish at Northwestern University.
