Book Contributions to the Theory of Natural Selection A Series of Essays

Download or read book Contributions to the Theory of Natural Selection A Series of Essays written by Alfred Russel Wallace and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every naturalist who has directed his attention to the subject of the geographical distribution of animals and plants, must have been interested in the singular facts which it presents. Many of these facts are quite different from what would have been anticipated, and have hitherto been considered as highly curious, but quite inexplicable. None of the explanations attempted from the time of Linnæus are now considered at all satisfactory; none of them have given a cause sufficient to account for the facts known at the time, or comprehensive enough to include all the new facts which have since been, and are daily being added. Of late years, however, a great light has been thrown upon the subject by geological investigations, which have shown that the present state of the earth and of the organisms nowinhabiting it, is but the last stage of a long and uninterrupted series of changes which it has undergone, and consequently, that to endeavour to explain and account for its present condition without any reference to those changes (as has frequently been done) must lead to very imperfect and erroneous conclusions. The facts proved by geology are briefly these:—That during an immense, but unknown period, the surface of the earth has undergone successive changes; land has sunk beneath the ocean, while fresh land has risen up from it; mountain chains have been elevated; islands have been formed into continents, and continents submerged till they have become islands; and these changes have taken place, not once merely, but perhaps hundreds, perhaps thousands of times:—That all these operations have been more or less continuous, but unequal in their progress, and during the whole series the organic life of the earth has undergone a corresponding alteration. This alteration also has been gradual, but complete; after a certain interval not a single species existing which had lived at the commencement of the period. This complete renewal of the forms of life also appears to have occurred several times:—That from the last of the geological epochs to the present or historical epoch, the change of organic life has been gradual: the first appearance of animals now existing can in many cases be traced, their numbers gradually increasing in the more recent formations, while other species continually die out and disappear, so that the present condition of the organic world is clearly derived by a natural process of gradual extinction and creation of species from that of the latest geological periods. We may therefore safely infer a like gradation and natural sequence from one geological epoch to another. Now, taking this as a fair statement of the results of geological inquiry, we see that the present geographical distribution of life upon the earth must be the result of all the previous changes, both of the surface of the earth itself and of its inhabitants. Many causes, no doubt, have operated of which we must ever remain in ignorance, and we may, therefore, expect to find many details very difficult of explanation, and in attempting to give one, must allow ourselves to call into our service geological changes which it is highly probable may have occurred, though we have no direct evidence of their individual operation.

Book Academic Librarianship

Download or read book Academic Librarianship written by Marcy Simons and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Librarianship: Anchoring the Profession in Contribution, Scholarship, and Service is needed now as a response to how much has changed in academic librarianship as a profession (from the smallest academic libraries to large research libraries). Much has been written recently about the status of the profession of librarianship, i.e. whether or not it should still be considered a “profession,” are the same credentials still required/enough, should things change dramatically in SLIS programs in response to the new normal, and what is the impact of hiring PhD’s in disciplines outside of librarianship. Major topics covered include: State of the profession of librarianship today Status of librarians Tenure or not Move away from faculty status in some (more) academic libraries Contributions to the profession -- scholarship What is produced How are librarians conducting research Where is it taking place -- who is producing scholarship Why Trends Contribution to the profession -- service and professional associations LIS Education Tomorrow -- what are the implications for the future of our profession Author Marcy Simons explores the history, current status, and future of the profession of academic librarianship. She clearly demonstrates the need for a shared understanding of how we will work together in order to continue our transformation.

Book New Contributions to the Philosophy of History

Download or read book New Contributions to the Philosophy of History written by Daniel Little and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insights developed in the past two decades by philosophers of the social sciences can serve to enrich the challenging intellectual tasks of conceptualizing, investigating, and representing the human past. Likewise, intimate engagement with the writings of historians can deepen philosophers’ understanding of the task of knowing the past. This volume brings these perspectives together and considers fundamental questions, such as: What is historical causation? What is a large historical structure? How can we best conceptualize “mentalities” and “identities”? What is involved in understanding the subjectivity of historical actors? What is involved in arriving at an economic history of a large region? How are actions and outcomes related? The arguments touch upon a wide range of historical topics -- the Chinese and French Revolutions, the extension of railroads in the nineteenth century, and the development of agriculture in medieval China.

Book Contributions to Statistics

Download or read book Contributions to Statistics written by P. C. Mahalanobis and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions to Statistics focuses on the processes, methodologies, and approaches involved in statistics. The book is presented to Professor P. C. Mahalanobis on the occasion of his 70th birthday. The selection first offers information on the recovery of ancillary information and combinatorial properties of partially balanced designs and association schemes. Discussions focus on combinatorial applications of the algebra of association matrices, sample size analogy, association matrices and the algebra of association schemes, and conceptual statistical experiments. The book then examines lattice sampling by means of Lahiri's sampling scheme; contributions of interpenetrating networks of samples; and apparently unconnected problems encountered in sampling work. The publication takes a look at screening processes, place of the design of experiments in the logic of scientific inference, and rarefaction. Topics include mathematical probability, scientific experience, combinatorial progress, gains and losses, criterion and scores, simple drug screening process, and screening of crop varieties. The manuscript then reviews the estimation and interpretation of gross differences and the simple response variance; partially balanced asymmetrical factorial designs; and approximation of distributions of sums of independent summands by infinitely divisible distributions. The selection is a dependable reference for statisticians and researchers interested in the processes, methodologies, and approaches employed in statistics.
