Book Environment and Livestock in India

Download or read book Environment and Livestock in India written by Shri Niwas Mishra and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first comprehensive study of the national and global environmental effects of India's livestock production system. The first few chapters provide a descriptive account of India's livestock biodiversity as determined by environmental conditions, modes of livestock farming, chief features of mixed livestock farming integrated with agriculture, and its direct and indirect linkages with environment. The authors have also formulated an environmental model of the livestock production system in an input-output framework. Environmental effects are shown to occur on both sides of the system. The model should be of interest to environmental scientists and economists. Based on the model the book provides estimates of greenhouse gases (methane) emission from cattle and buffaloes, carbon dioxide emission prevented due to animal energy use in agriculture arising out of fossil-fuel saving, arable land area saved by recycling agricultural by-products as animal feed, as also from during cake as a source of biofuel, and the saving of chemical fertilizers by using during as manure. The authors then value these positive environmental contributions in rupee terms. Interestingly, they conclude that the sum of these values is much more than the value of output of India's livestock sector as a whole. Finally, the book compares the environmental effects of the Indian dairy production system with that of the US. This comparison is particularly addressed to environmentally concerned readers in the developed world.

Book Role of Livestock Sector in Sustainable Livelihood Security in Bihar

Download or read book Role of Livestock Sector in Sustainable Livelihood Security in Bihar written by Abhay Kumar and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Livestock Revolution is expected to make a significant contribution towards livelihood security and reducing rural poverty. The rural poor have little access to land and thus there are limited opportunities for them in crop production. On the other hand, livestock wealth is more equitably distributed compared to land, and the expanding demand for animal food products generates significant opportunities for the poor in overcoming poverty through diversifying and intensifying livestock production. Keeping in view the above fact, a survey was conducted in 2006-07 to assess the livestock scenario in Bihar with the help of Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Technology, Patna to assess the livestock scenario in Bihar. Altogether 9 districts namely, Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, Purnia, Katihar, Banka, Jamui, Gaya, Aurangabad and Patna representing all the agro-climatic zones of Bihar. Survey revealed that the dairy contributed, on an average, about 22.39 percent to total household income in sample villages which was next only to crop production. It was found that livestock besides providing income to landless and marginal farmers also contributes significantly to their income in term of imputed wage of family labour. Findings also indicate that per capita availability of animal protein in the state is about 58 % in case of milk, 54 % in meat and one-fourth in eggs when compared to their respective availability at national level. Survey revealed that private practitioners played a major role in maintenance of general health and management of livestock. Public Animal Health Centres were the second most utilized source for health care services, particularly on medium and large farm households. Dairy sector generated annual per household employment of 831 hrs and goatry provided annual employment of 736 hrs for family members.

Book The Role of Livestock in Developing Countries

Download or read book The Role of Livestock in Developing Countries written by Ridwan Mohamed and published by . This book was released on 2023-09-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2022 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 5, Jimma University College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (Agribusiness and Value Chain Management), course: Livestock importance, language: English, abstract: Livestock play a significant role in rural livelihoods and the economies of developing countries. They are providers of income and employment for producers and others working in, sometimes complex, value chains. They are a crucial asset and safety net for the poor, especially for women and pastoralist groups, and they provide an important source of nourishment for billions of rural and urban households. These socio-economic roles and others are increasing in importance as the sector grows because of increasing human populations, incomes and urbanisation rates. To provide these benefits, the sector uses a significant amount of land, water, biomass and other resources and emits a considerable quantity of greenhouse gases. There is concern on how to manage the sector's growth, so that these benefits can be attained at a lower environmental cost. Livestock and environment interactions in developing countries in are both positive and negative. Livestock production in the developing world occurs in a wide range of heterogeneous production systems. These can range from pastoral/grassland-based systems, which occupy most of the land area and have low human population densities, through mixed crop-livestock systems, usually in areas suitable both for arable and livestock production and where the bulk of rural human population lives, and intensive systems usually in peri-urban/urban areas. New diversification options and improved safety nets will also be essential when intensification is not the primary avenue for developing the livestock sector. These processes will need to be supported by agile and effective public and private institutions.
