Book Contribution of Industrial Municipal Agricultural and Groundwater Sources to Nutrient Export Athabasca Wapiti and Smoky Rivers 1980 1993

Download or read book Contribution of Industrial Municipal Agricultural and Groundwater Sources to Nutrient Export Athabasca Wapiti and Smoky Rivers 1980 1993 written by Patricia A. Chambers and published by The Study. This book was released on 1996 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this report is to assess the sources of nitrogen and phosphorus to the Athabasca and Wapiti/Smoky rivers and evaluate the need to consider groundwater contributions when undertaking simulation modelling of chemical parameters of the Athabasca River during winter. To address the first objective, longitudinal trends in nitrogen and phosphorus were examined for each river system in relation to point source inputs and the contributions of anthropogenic point sources and agricultural activity in the rivers' nutrient loads were quantified. The importance of groundwater during winter was assessed by examining hydrologic mass balances and changes in dominant ion proportions. Results are presented of analyses of long-term values of nutrients from ten sites on the Athabasca and three sites on the Wapiti/Smoky rivers.

National Guidelines and Standards Office and published by Environment Canada. This book was released on 2004 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents a guidance framework for the management of phosphorus in freshwater systems. The introduction reviews the development & validation of this framework. Chapter 2 presents a review of the scientific literature on phosphorus in the aquatic environment, including properties, sources, fate, sediment interactions, parameters affecting phosphorus availability, trophic status, & effects on organisms. Chapter 3 examines a number of approaches used by other jurisdictions for setting phosphorus guidelines. Chapter 4 outlines the proposed framework-based approach for phosphorus management in which water bodies are marked for further assessment by comparing their trophic status to predefined ranges of phosphorus concentration. Chapter 5 summarizes some of the recommended assessment options currently use in Canada & other jurisdictions. Chapter 6 reviews management options that can be considered once the phosphorus concentrations have been assessed & compared to original goals for the water body. The final two chapters present case studies of implementation of this framework at Lake Simcoe in Ontario and at Kodiak Lake, Northwest Territories.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer. This book was released on 1985-03 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 28 (thesis year 1 983) a total of 10,661 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 197 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 28 reports theses submitted in-1983, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Download or read book Tools of the Trade written by Kristin Halverson and published by . This book was released on 2022-05-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century medicine is characterised by rapid technological change, new methods of diagnostics and treatments of disease, long-reaching developments in medical science, and professionalisation. This has led to great interest in the period and a large body of scholarly and popular research. However, much of this scholarship studies British, German and French contexts. There is a pressing need to study how knowledge and practice were transferred between regions and how medical technologies were adapted locally. Using Swedish and Danish medical journals, Kristin Halverson looks more closely at the relationships between knowledge, practice and device between 1855 and 1897. Medical devices appear frequently in journals and are often related to practical matters. With this in mind, this study examines four technological concerns in medicine more closely, namely devices used to examine the nose, throat and eye; orthopaedic practice; Listerist antisepsis; and the introduction of asepsis. These cases highlight how technologies were adapted locally and in practice. This is a history of nuance that highlights the diverse landscape of nineteenth-century medical practice.

Book excerpt: As the sustainability of our natural resources is increasingly questioned, Canadians remain stubbornly convinced of the unassailability of our water. Mounting evidence suggests, however, that Canadian water is under threat. Eau Canada assembles the country's top water experts to discuss our most pressing water issues. Perspectives from a broad range of thinkers geographers, environmental lawyers, former government officials, aquatic and political scientists, and economists reflect the diversity of concerns in water management. Arguing that weak governance is at the heart of Canada's water problems, this timely book identifies our key failings, explores debates over jurisdiction, transboundary waters, exports, and privatization, and maps out solutions for protecting our most important resource.

Book Fish Distribution Movement and Gross External Pathology Information for the Peace Athabasca and Slave River Basins

Download or read book Fish Distribution Movement and Gross External Pathology Information for the Peace Athabasca and Slave River Basins written by Thomas A. Mill and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the findings of various field and laboratory projects that studied fish distribution, movement, habitat utilization, and gross pathology in the northern Alberta river basins. Begins with a description of the river basins and related water bodies, a list of fish species found, and an overview of fish distribution and relative abundance in the mainstem rivers. This is followed by a synthesis of available information on movements of fish through space and time, as collected from fish tagging and radio telemetry studies. Movements of individual fish are also described (spawning movements and movements to summer feeding and winter habitats). Finally, critical fish habitats (spawning, feeding, and overwintering) are noted, food chain studies are summarized, and responses of fish to changes in water quality (including pathological manifestations) are reviewed.
