Book excerpt: A partir de variables mise en évidence dans différentes publications antérieures, le but de ce travail est d’étudier les relations entre la morphologie basicrânienne et l’organisation antéro-postérieure de la face. L’apport de cette étude réside dans l’utilisation de l’analyse de formes par la Méthode Procuste, à la recherche de corrélations entre : 1/ Des variables basicrâniennes dans les plans sagittal (flexion basicrânienne) et horizontal (orientation des pyramides pétreuses) d’une part. 2/ Les relations squelettiques maxillo-mandibulaires dans la dimension antéro-postérieure (matéralisées par les points S, N, A, B) d’autre part. L’échantillon (n = 69), composé de patients âgés de 6 à 15 ans, est d’abord étudié dans son ensemble, puis classé selon la phase de denture (mixte, adolescente, adulte) et ensuite selon la classe squelettique (I, II, III). Les résultats mettent en évidence peu de corrélations statistiquement significatives : 1/ Aucune corrélation n’est trouvée dans l’étude de l’échantillon complet, 2/ Dans le groupe des classes II squelettiques, une corrélation est trouvée entre les relations squelettiques maxillo-mandibulaires (points N, A, B) et l’orientation des pyramides pétreuses : une fermeture de l’angle postérieur formé par ces axes s’accompagne d’une augmentation de la classe II squelettique. 3/ Dans le groupe des sujets en denture mixte, une corrélation est trouvée entre les relations squelettiques maxillo-mandibulaires (points S, N, A, B) et la flexion sphénoïdale : une plus grande fermeture de l’angle clivus/planum d’accompagne d’un déplacement vers la classe III squelettique.

Pinault draws on the published Arabic editions — especially Bulaq, MacNaghten, and the fourteenth-century Galland text recently edited by Mahdi — as well as unpublished Arabic manuscripts from libraries in France and North Africa. The study demonstrates that significantly different versions have survived of some of the most famous tales from the Nights. Pinault notes how individual manuscript redactors employed — and sometimes modified — formulaic phrases and traditional narrative topoi in ways consonant with the themes emphasized in particular versions of a tale. He also examines the redactors' modification of earlier sources — Arabic chronicles and Islamic religious treatises, geographers' accounts and medieval legends — for specific narrative goals. Comparison of the narrative structure of diverse story-collection also sheds new light on the relationship of the embedded subordinate-narrative to the overarching frame-tale. All cited passages from the Nights and other Arabic story- collections have been fully translated into English.

Approaching the problem from a functional-typological perspective and basing the analysis upon semantics, Professor Woods argues that these elements, in their primary function, constitute a system of grammatical voice, in which the active voice is set against the middle voice. The latter is represented by heavy and light markers that differ with respect to focus and emphasis. As a system of grammatical voice, the conjugation prefixes provided Sumerian speakers with a linguistic means of altering the perspective from which events may be viewed, giving speakers a series of options for better approximating in language the infinitely graded spectrum of human conceptualization and experience.
