Book excerpt: La présente étude s'inscrit dans la thématique de la pollution particulaire de l'air intérieur et plus particulièrement dans le développement et la mise au point d'outils de prédiction du comportement de l'air chargé en particules à l'intérieur des bâtiments. La première partie présente un état de l'art des connaissances de la pollution particulaire. Les différentes particules rencontrées à l'intérieur des bâtiments sont recensées et classées selon leurs origines et leurs tailles. Le problème de la prédiction du mouvement des particules est introduit par l'étude de la diversité des forces élémentaires qui s'exercent sur les particules. La seconde partie est consacrée au développement d'un modèle de prédiction des concentrations en particules dans l'air à l'intérieur d'une enceinte monozone. Ce modèle considère l'air pollué comme une entité unique, et traite les échanges avec l'extérieur et les parois du bâtiment dans leurs globalités. Une expérimentation sur maquette a été mise au point afin d'étudier la déposition des particules sur les revêtements du bâtiment. Cette étude a permis à la fois de quantifier cette déposition et de mettre au point un principe de classification des revêtements vis-à-vis de la déposition particulaire. La dernière partie traite de la modélisation numérique du comportement des particules au sein d'écoulements confinés tels que ceux rencontrés dans le bâtiment. L’extension à la troisième dimension de l'espace du code de calcul développé au Leptab, a été validée par l'étude de la dispersion des particules au sein d'un écoulement turbulent de grille. Deux lois caractérisant l'interaction entre une particule et un revêtement ont pu être testées et comparées par la simulation de l'expérimentation sur maquette. Les perspectives à la fois sur le développement et la validation du modèle global ainsi que sur l'amélioration du code numérique de calcul de la dispersion des particules sont présentées et argumentées en conclusion.

Book excerpt: This book is a natural extension of the SCOPE (Scientific Committee of Problems on the Environment) volumes on the carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) biogeochemical cycles and their interactions (Likens, 1981; Bolin and Cook, 1983). Substantial progress in the knowledge of these cycles has been made since publication of those volumes. In particular, the nature and extent of biological and inorganic interactions between these cycles have been identified, positive and negative feedbacks recognized and the relationship between the cycles and global environmental change preliminarily elucidated. In March 1991, a NATO Advanced Research Workshop was held for one week in Melreux, Belgium to reexamine the biogeochemical cycles of C, N, P and S on a variety of time and space scales from a holistic point of view. This book is the result of that workshop. The biogeochemical cycles of C, N, P and S are intimately tied to each other through biological productivity and subsequently to problems of global environmental change. These problems may be the most challenging facing humanity in the 21 st century. In the broadest sense, "global change" encompasses both changes to the status of the large, globally connected atmospheric, oceanic and terrestrial environments (e. g. tropospheric temperature increase) and change occurring as the result of nearly simultaneous local changes in many regions of the world (e. g. eutrophication).
