Book excerpt: Ce travail est une contribution à l'étude de comportement d'un arc électrique au sein des appareils de coupure DC basse tension. Depuis plusieurs décennies, de nombreuses études portant sur le comportement d'un arc électrique au sein des appareils de coupure ont été investiguées, en particulier sur les disjoncteurs basse tension. Cependant, vu la complexité des phénomènes physiques qui interviennent, les études se focalisent sur un ou plusieurs paramètres qui influencent le mouvement de l'arc selon les techniques de coupure utilisées dans les appareils. Cette étude se consacre sur l'influence d'un fort champ magnétique externe sur le comportement d'un arc électrique établi dans l'air, sous pression atmosphérique et pour des courants allant du nominal In à la surcharge 4In. La problématique dans cette thèse sera abordée par deux approches l'une expérimentale et l'autre théorique en utilisant la simulation numérique. La première approche consiste à mettre en place un dispositif expérimental conçu pour reproduire un arc électrique dans des conditions similaires à celles trouvées dans l'interrupteur industriel. Le banc d'essai permet de faire varier les paramètres qui affectent le déplacement de l'arc, tel que l'intensité du courant, la vitesse d'ouverture des contacts, l'échappement et spécifiquement dans notre problématique l'intensité du champ magnétique extérieur appliqué. A cette fin, une bobine de Helmholtz est conçue pour générer un champ magnétique de l'ordre de 0,2 T, qui est équivalent à l'intensité d'un champ magnétique créé par un aimant permanent de type Néodyme intégré dans l'interrupteur industriel. Les résultats expérimentaux permettent d'accéder à la visualisation de la dynamique de l'arc électrique à l'aide d'une caméra rapide (89 000 images/s) ainsi qu'à la mesure des grandeurs électriques qui caractérisent la coupure. La deuxième approche consiste à développer des modèles tridimensionnels qui simulent le mouvement d'un plasma d'arc. Les modèles utilisés sont classiques, ils sont basés sur un système d'équations magnétohydrodynamiques pour la colonne d'arc à l'ETL. Pour la résolution numérique de ce système, nous avons choisi le logiciel commercial COMSOL Multiphysics. Ces modèles appliqués à l'interrupteur industriel simulent le comportement du plasma d'arc lors de la phase d'ouverture des contacts électriques ainsi que la commutation de l'arc sur les rails en présence d'un fort champ magnétique externe. Les simulations numériques permettent d'accéder aux grandeurs électriques et physiques de l'arc au cours de la coupure permettant d'aiguiller les choix techniques pour optimiser la conception. Enfin, des comparaisons entre simulations numériques et résultats expérimentaux sont présentées et discutées. Les résultats numériques ont été confrontés avec les résultats expérimentaux et ont montré un bon accord. Des améliorations du modèle sont discutées comme perspectives de ce travail.

His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.
