Book excerpt: Les matériaux poreux (fibreux, mousses plastiques) sont couramment employés dans diverses situations industrielles visant à réduire le niveau sonore de systèmes acoustiques comme les moteurs, les gaines d'aérations, ou les habitacles de véhicules. Ce travail de thèse comporte trois parties distinctes concernant la propagation acoustique et les matériaux poreux. Dans les deux premières parties, l'étude un conduit rectiligne de géométrie 2D traité avec un matériau poreux est exposé. Le matériau poreux est considéré d'abord à structure rigide, la théorie du "fluide équivalent" est alors utilisée. Puis, la structure est considérée souple et la théorie complète de Biot est employée. Afin de déterminer les modes se propageant dans de tels systèmes, les constantes de propagations sont d'abord identifiées dans la limite basse fréquence où la relation de dispersion se simplifie et fait apparaître deux familles de modes différentes liées aux sous-systèmes du conduit. Lorsque le matériau est considéré à structure souple, une famille supplémentaire de mode liée à la nature "solide élastique" du traitement poreux doit être prise en compte. Les différentes solutions sont ensuite suivies numériquement, en incrémentant la fréquence jusqu'à la fréquence désirée, pour générer l'ensemble des modes présents. Une application numérique montre l'intérêt de l'évaluation de l'ensemble des modes spécifiquement pour identifier le mode le moins atténué pour chacune des fréquences considérées. La généralité de la méthode est validée en considérant un conduit à géométrie cylindrique. La troisième partie du travail est consacrée à l'effet de la température sur le comportement acoustique d'un matériau poreux. Une expérience a été mise en place pour mesurer la variation de résistivité au passage en fonction de la variation de température (plusieurs centaines de degrés) d'échantillons de poreux de nature différentes (billes de céramique, laine de roche). Il en résulte que la variation de la viscosité de l'air ne décrit pas complètement la variation de résistivité : une correction est à prendre en compte qui est attribuée à une modification de la géométrie interne du matériau mesuré. Enfin, le dernier chapitre expose une méthode acoustique permettant d'évaluer une constante élastique d'un matériau poreux. L'absorption d'un système constitué d'une plaque rigide imperméable couplée à une large surface de matériau poreux est mesurée à l'aide de la méthode du doublet microphonique. La comparaison avec l'absorption simulée par le logiciel de prédictions acoustiques Maine3A permet l'extraction du module de compression longitudinal. Cette mesure est ensuite comparée celle issue d'une méthode mécanique traditionnelle : le banc de traction/compression. Les résultats montrent un accord satisfaisant pour des matériaux tels que les fibreux. Les limitations de l'expérience dans sa configuration actuelle sont exposées lors des mesures d'un matériau de type mousse plastique.

We are doing a reprint of MIT Press's first edition of 1991, which again is based on the original French version of 1930, with an introduction added by the author in 1960. While the MIT Press version had black-and-white illustrations throughout, Park Books' new edition features some of Le Corbusier's drawings in color as they were in the earlier French editions. A new essay by British scholar Tim Benton, written for this new edition, contextualizes the book within Le Corbusier's oeuvre and comments on its lasting significance. An also new appendix explains specialist terms and provides background information on persons and historic events no longer necessarily known to a younger generation of architects. The Precisions, as the book is known commonly, emerged from a spontaneous and exuberant series of 10 lectures Le Corbusier gave in Buenos Aires during the fall of 1929.
