Book excerpt: The theory of General Relativity, after its invention by Albert Einstein, remained for many years a monument of mathemati cal speculation, striking in its ambition and its formal beauty, but quite separated from the main stream of modern Physics, which had centered, after the early twenties, on quantum mechanics and its applications. In the last ten or fifteen years, however, the situation has changed radically. First, a great deal of significant exper~en tal data became available. Then important contributions were made to the incorporation of general relativity into the framework of quantum theory. Finally, in the last three years, exciting devel opments took place which have placed general relativity, and all the concepts behind it, at the center of our understanding of par ticle physics and quantum field theory. Firstly, this is due to the fact that general relativity is really the "original non-abe lian gauge theory," and that our description of quantum field in teractions makes extensive use of the concept of gauge invariance. Secondly, the ideas of supersymmetry have enabled theoreticians to combine gravity with other elementary particle interactions, and to construct what is perhaps the first approach to a more finite quantum theory of gravitation, which is known as super gravity.

Le point de départ de cette recherche a été l'étude de la limite newtonienne de la relativité générale. Très vite, notre intérêt s'est porté sur l'effet du temps retardé et son rôle dans l'absence d'aberration. Ce manque d'aberration est la raison pour laquelle la force pointe dans la direction instantanée (extrapolée) pour des sources sans accélération, malgré la vitesse finie de la gravitation (c'est aussi le cas pour l'électromagnétisme). Ceci nous a conduit à calculer le champ résultant entre deux masses accélérées avec la présence d'aberration. Nous avons en particulier considéré le mouvement de deux masses de telle façon que la force totale de Newton à une position s'annule alors que les effets du temps retardé soient bien différents de zéro. Nous avons pu calculer ces derniers et proposer deux situations où ils pourraient être observés dans le futur. L'étude de la linéarisation de la relativité générale a naturellement porté notre intérêt sur la physique du graviton, la version quantifiée de la théorie classique linéaire. Plusieurs travaux sur l'impossibilité d'observer directement ce graviton [1,2] ainsi que des expériences de pensée sur la possibilité de le quantifier ou non [3] ont piqué notre curiosité. C'est ce qui a lancé la recherche de la section efficace (et du potentiel) dans le cas d'une diffusion gravitationnelle sur une particule initialement dans une superposition spatiale. En parallèle de ces recherches, des discussions avec mon collègue Kévin Nguyen et la lecture de son article [4], ont attiré mon attention sur le problème de la constante cosmologique et l'élégante solution proposée. Cette dernière est basée sur l'ajout d'un scalaire couplé non minimalement avec la gravité et permet d'expliquer la valeur minuscule de la constante cosmologique par certains très petits paramètres du champ scalaire. Leur solution était cependant encore très théorique, car elle n'était valable que dans un univers sans matière. Nous avons donc analysé l'effet de la matière sur l'évolution du champ scalaire et montré que dans une partie de l'espace des paramètres, la théorie considérée résolvait le problème de la constante cosmologique tout en restant indistinguable de la relativité générale.

Franck Laloë was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.

Book excerpt: The program of the Institute covered several aspects of functional integration -from a robust mathematical foundation to many applications, heuristic and rigorous, in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. It included analytic and numerical computational techniques. One of the goals was to encourage cross-fertilization between these various aspects and disciplines. The first week was focused on quantum and classical systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom; the second week on field theories. During the first week the basic course, given by P. Cartier, was a presentation of a recent rigorous approach to functional integration which does not resort to discretization, nor to analytic continuation. It provides a definition of functional integrals simpler and more powerful than the original ones. Could this approach accommodate the works presented by the other lecturers? Although much remains to be done before answering "Yes," there seems to be no major obstacle along the road. The other courses taught during the first week presented: a) a solid introduction to functional numerical techniques (A. Sokal) and their applications to functional integrals encountered in chemistry (N. Makri). b) integrals based on Poisson processes and their applications to wave propagation (S. K. Foong), in particular a wave-restorer or wave-designer algorithm yielding the initial wave profile when one can only observe its distortion through a dissipative medium. c) the formulation of a quantum equivalence principle (H. Kleinert) which. given the flat space theory, yields a well-defined quantum theory in spaces with curvature and torsion.

Its title accurately reflects the domains to which Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat has made essential contributions. Since the rise of General Relativity, the geometry of Manifolds has become a non-trivial part of space-time physics. At the same time, Functional Analysis has been of enormous importance in Quantum Mechanics, and Quantum Field Theory. Its role becomes decisive when one considers the global behaviour of solutions of differential systems on manifolds. In this sense, General Relativity is an exceptional theory in which the solutions of a highly non-linear system of partial differential equations define by themselves the very manifold on which they are supposed to exist. This is why a solution of Einstein's equations cannot be physically interpreted before its global behaviour is known, taking into account the entire hypothetical underlying manifold. In her youth, Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat contributed in a spectacular way to this domain stretching between physics and mathematics, when she gave the proof of the existence of solutions to Einstein's equations on differential manifolds of a quite general type. The methods she created have been worked out by the French school of mathematics, principally by Jean Leray. Her first proof of the local existence and uniqueness of solutions of Einstein's equations inspired Jean Leray's theory of general hyperbolic systems.
