Book excerpt: L‘intérêt porté aux aluminiures de titane dans l’industrie aéronautique, notamment pour la fabrication des tuyères et des aubes de turbines, est justifié par leurs excellentes propriétés mécaniques à haute température et leur faible densité par rapport aux aciers et alliages à base nickel actuellement utilisés. Cependant, ces matériaux ont pour inconvénient de présenter une piètre résistance à la corrosion par les gaz oxydants aux températures excédant 700°C. L’objectif de cette étude était donc d’améliorer le comportement en oxydation à haute température des aluminiures de titane, à l’aide d’un traitement de surface par « chimie douce », destiné à introduire l’élément phosphore. Les matériaux d’étude : Ti-54Al, TA6V et titane non allié, ont été immergés (dipping) dans une solution d’acide orthophosphorique dilué à l’acétone, séchés à l’air, puis soumis à un traitement thermique sous air ou argon. On observe la formation à la surface des échantillons d’un film micrométrique constitué d’un composé de type pyrophosphate. Au cours des tests d’oxydation sous air (températures de 700°C à 900°C), ce film de pyrophosphate commence par ralentir fortement la vitesse d’oxydation en jouant le rôle de barrière à la diffusion. Ce pyrophosphate évolue ensuite, de manière plus ou moins rapide en fonction de la température, vers une phase TiO2 contenant du phosphore. Cette phase permet également de réduire la vitesse d’oxydation des substrats, réduction attribuée à un effet de dopage par l’ion phosphore P5+, effet qui va en s’atténuant lorsque l’oxydation se poursuit.
