Book Contrastive Analysis in Language

Download or read book Contrastive Analysis in Language written by D. Willems and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-12-16 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about comparison in linguistics in general, rather than 'contrastive analysis' as a distinct branch of linguistics. It addresses the question 'Does the analytical apparatus used by linguists allow comparisons to be made across languages?' Four major domains are considered in turn: derivational morphology, syntax, semantics & pragmatics, and discourse. Contributions cover a broad spectrum of linguistic disciplines, ranging from contrastive linguistics and linguistic typology to translation studies and historical linguistics.

Book Contrastive Analysis English German

Download or read book Contrastive Analysis English German written by Catharina Belinghausen and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 2,0, University of Cologne, language: English, abstract: Speaking English in a "native-like" way does not only consist of the abilities of speaking fluently and gramatically correct. Pronounciation and the proper use of the right sounds at the right time play an important role just as well. This paper outlines the English and German sound system, alludes to the differences between the systems and points at possible resulting problems for the German English learner. Before comparing English to other languages it has to be advised that English occurs in many global and local variations. Similar to the German "Hochdeutsch", two main standards had been established: "Received Pronounciation" (RP) of todays's British English and "General American" (GA). Since the chose literature basically deals with the latter, this paper is limited to "General American". To supply an introduction and a basis for the subsequent chapter a short overview of general sound production and the taxonomy of characterizing sounds is provided. Following this taxonomy Englih consonantes are firstly described and thereafter opposed to their German counterparts. Based on the determined differnces, possible phonemic and phonetic difficulties for the English learner are shown and adequate tasks to overcome those obstacles are introduced. Analogue to the previous, the presentation of the vowel systems, their differences and resulting problems completes the paper.

Book A Contrastive Analysis of the English and the German Present Perfect Tense and their Main Declarative Clauses

Download or read book A Contrastive Analysis of the English and the German Present Perfect Tense and their Main Declarative Clauses written by Jenny Streb and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Mannheim, language: English, abstract: This paper is going to provide an insight into contrasts between the English and German language. Due to a shared origin from the Indo-European languages, the two languages are perceived to be similar enough to have sufficient things in common in order to establish comparability but are at the same time also distinctive enough to show significant contrasts. The essential theme of this paper argues that English and German may exhibit formal parallels on the surface, however, accommodate very different underlying usages and internal structures. Due to a limited length of this paper the discussion of contrasts is restricted to the resultative and narrative usage of the Present Perfect tense as well as to declarative main clauses in the syntax.

Book A Contrastive Analysis of German and English Morphosyntactic Features

Download or read book A Contrastive Analysis of German and English Morphosyntactic Features written by Jenny Streb and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, University of Mannheim, language: English, abstract: In this thesis, the accuracy of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is explored with the help of a study investigating the German L2 morphosyntactic competence of 15 English L1 speakers in two settings: a language assessment test setting as well as in online processing. Within this thesis L2 morphosyntactic competence was limited to the two investigated areas of subject-verb-agreement (SVA) as well as the distinctive verb placement in German main and subordinate clauses. Previous research has identified these two linguistic areas as being especially prone to error in adult L2 acquisition of German. Since all test takers varied in their German language proficiency levels (encompassing a range from A2 to B2 according to the CEFR) it was hypothesised that L2 learners of a B2 language proficiency level generally outperform L2 learners of a lower language proficiency level (B1 and A2) in all investigated areas. However, this hypothesis could not be affirmed since the study did not find significant differences in the morphosyntactic competence of English German L2 learners between test takers of distinctive CEF language proficiency levels.

Book A Contrastive Analysis of the English and the German Sound System

Download or read book A Contrastive Analysis of the English and the German Sound System written by Nermin Bastug and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012-06-08 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Grammar, Style, Working Technique, grade: 14, University of Marburg, course: Problems of English Grammar, language: English, abstract: This work is titled “A Contrastive Analysis of the English and the German Sound System. Problems and Suggestions for Teaching.” The features of sound in a language are systematically structured. They are divided into two main branches: (a) the branch of segmental features including consonants and vowels, and (b) the branch of supra-segmental features including stress, intonation, pause, juncture, and rhythm (Nasr 1997: 2). My paper refers to branch (a) and illustrates the differences between the English (RP) and German consonant and vowel systems. The resulting contrasts reveal the main difficulties German learners of English are confronted with, therefore, these need to be exposed in teaching (Kufner 1971: 36). After contrasting the sound systems, I will comment on the aim and importance of learning English pronunciation, and then I will explain the error degrees caused by the sound contrasts. Later, there is an overview of the most important qualifications of a phonetic teacher, and finally I will provide suggestions for teaching the pronunciation difficulties caused by the differences between the two languages.

Book GECCo German English Contrasts in Cohesion

Download or read book GECCo German English Contrasts in Cohesion written by Kerstin Kunz and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrastive linguistics of English and German, there is a tradition of accounting for contrasts with respect to grammar and, to a lesser extent, for lexis and phonetics. Moving on to discourse and text, there is a sizeable body of literature on cohesive patterns in English and German respectively - but very little in terms of a comparison. The latter, though, is of particular interest for language learners, translators and, of course, linguists and researchers in language technology. This book attempts to close this gap, based on a number of years of corpus-based study into variation and cohesion in the two languages. While there is an overall focus on language contrasts, it also investigates variation between different registers language-internally, and between written and spoken mode in particular. For each of the five major types of cohesion (co-reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunctive relations and lexical cohesion), overviews are given of contrasts in the system and of contrastive frequencies in texts. Results and methods presented in this book are thus relevant for language teaching, translation, language technology and corpus-based work on English and German generally.

Book Theoretical Issues in Contrastive Linguistics

Download or read book Theoretical Issues in Contrastive Linguistics written by Jacek Fisiak and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1981-01-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrastive Linguistics, roughly defined as a subdiscipline of linguistics which is concerned with the comparison of two or more (subsystems of) languages, has long been associated primarily with language teaching. Apart from this applied aspect, however, it also has a strong theoretical purpose, contributing to our understanding of language typology and language universals. Issues in theoretical CL, which also feature in this volume, are the choice of model, the notions of equivalence and contrast, and directionality of descriptions. Languages used for illustration in this volume include English, German, Danish, and Polish.

Book Plural Formation in English and German

Download or read book Plural Formation in English and German written by Jennifer Franz and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-08-05 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Learning materials - English, grade: 1,7, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, language: English, abstract: This paper will at first analyze the building of the plural in the two languages German and English, and afterwards discuss their similarities and differences. The paper asks for the differences and similarities of plural formation in German and English. Therefore, the author presents some previous literature to get an overview on the empirical state. Afterwards, the data and methodology will be discussed; this part is separated in the German and English plural formation. Both parts will analyze the regularities and irregularities of the formation process of their plural nouns. The contrastive synopsis will explain the similarities, as well as the differences of both languages. At last, the author will recap the term paper’s results in a concise conclusion. Plural formation could be so easy, if it was as simple as in George Orwell’s "Nineteen Eighty–Four". In this novel, the suffix -s forms the plural with every noun in the singular. Thus, man simply becomes *mans. Of course, the process of plural formation is much more complicated. The plural formation of nouns is a part of the inflectional morphology in general.
