Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inflation is an economic phenomenon that has profound implications for lawyers and jurists, because the great bulk of our laws and legal doctrines have been formulated on the assumption that the value of money remains relatively stable. Inasmuch as such an assumption is no longer tenable in much of the world, it threatens the operation of our most basic legal institutions. In this book, Keith Rosenn shows how inflation affects legal documents like contracts—how it distorts credit transactions, suits for damages, and laws of taxation—and he tells how current economic practices can be adapted to reduce or eliminate the impact. He explores the possibility of using a comprehensive indexation scheme for coping with inflation. Although Rosenn recognizes the deficiencies of price indexes, he considers the practical and theoretical implications of indexation. His analysis is firmly grounded in a detailed examination of the experience of countries like Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, and Italy in adapting their legal institutions to the fact of inflation.

AJ part of that celebration, the International Economic Association was invited to organise a conference on the very topical subject of inflation-a subject of great concern to the banking community in all countries-and the Riksbankens Jubileumsfund bore the largest share of its expenses. We are greatly indebted to Mr Kristen Rickman, Governor of the Sviriges Riksbank, for his interest and support in all the work of the con-ference.

Book Controlling Inflation

Download or read book Controlling Inflation written by Clarence Barber and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1982, this book examines how eighteen Western countries dealt with extraordinary inflationary pressures of the 1970s. The authors weigh the alternatives of tax-based incomes policies versus outright wage and price controls, and analyze the record of controls implemented in the U.S. and Canada. They conclude that the Anti-Inflation Board controls of 1975-78 reduced inflation, and were equal in their effects on wages and profits. Controlling Inflation offers a close analysis of the range of responses framed to meet the most pressing economic challenge faced by Western economies in the 1970s.

Book Macroeconomic Instability and Coordination

Download or read book Macroeconomic Instability and Coordination written by Axel Leijonhufvud and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Axel Leijonhufvud has made a unique contribution to the development of macroeconomic theory. This volume draws together his insightful essays dealing with the extremes of economic instability: great depressions, high inflation and the transition from socialism to a market economy. In several of the papers, Leijonhufvud brings a neo-institutionalist perspective to the problems of coordination in economic systems. The papers within Macroeconomic Instability and Coordination some of them already considered classics, deal with the questions that dominated Leijonhufvud's interest throughout his career as an economist: what are the limits to an economy's capacity to coordinate the activities of its members? How does the behavior of the system change under extreme conditions? In what ways does its performance depend upon the institutions that govern the market process?
