Download or read book Ceramic Lasers written by Akio Ikesue and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, ceramic materials were considered unsuitable for optics due to the numerous scattering sources, such as grain boundaries and residual pores. However, in the 1990s the technology to generate a coherent beam from ceramic materials was developed, and a highly efficient laser oscillation was realized. In the future, the technology derived from the development of the ceramic laser could be used to develop new functional passive and active optics. Co-authored by one of the pioneers of this field, the book describes the fabrication technology and theoretical characterization of ceramic material properties. It describes novel types of solid lasers and other optics using ceramic materials to demonstrate the application of ceramic gain media in the generation of coherent beams and light amplification. This is an invaluable guide for physicists, materials scientists and engineers working on laser ceramics.

Book Diode Pumped Frequency Doubled Yag Laser for the Treatment of Glaucoma

Download or read book Diode Pumped Frequency Doubled Yag Laser for the Treatment of Glaucoma written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Phase 1 STTR technical effort demonstrated the safety and efficiency of a continuous wave (cw) diode pumped frequency doubled YAG laser for the treatment of glaucoma. In-vitro and in-vivo experiments were conducted to establish safety and to identify the procedures best suited for this laser. The laser was fabricated according to a design developed at the Air Force Phillips Laboratory. The most significant result of the work was the verification of the assumption that the cw diode pumped frequency doubled YAG laser effects a tissue response nearly identical to that observed with an argon ion laser at identical power, spot size, and pulse duration. In-vitro exposure of ocular tissue with both lasers showed an acute response consistent with a thermal process. The use of the frequency doubled YAG laser to treat retinal tissue and for laser suturelysis was also investigated. These additional tests extend the potential of the laser to encompass all ophthalmic applications currently performed with the argon ion laser.

Book GaAsP Diode Pumped Nd YAG Laser

Download or read book GaAsP Diode Pumped Nd YAG Laser written by Stanley J. Scalise and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of spontaneous, GaAsP light-emitting diodes for CW optical pumping of Nd:YAG lasers was investigated. Two diode-pumped lasers were constructed and successfully operated at liquid nitrogen temperatures (77K). CW laser outputs of 130 mW and 430 mW were obtained at 1.06 micrometers with power efficiencies of 1.23 percent and 1.02 percent, respectively. The importance of the spectral match between the laser material absorption characteristics and the GaAsP array output was determined using experimental data. A computer program was developed to calculate the diode array peak wavelength necessary for maximum utilization of available pump energy by the laser rod. Restrictions imposed on the choice of pumping geometries by available discrete diode packages were determined. Based on the results of this program, design recommendations were made for improving the performance of a diode-pumped laser. (Author).

Book Few Cycle Laser Pulse Generation and Its Applications

Download or read book Few Cycle Laser Pulse Generation and Its Applications written by Franz X. Kärtner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-09-14 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the physics, technology and applications of short pulse laser sources that generate pulses with durations of only a few optical cycles. The basic design considerations for the different systems such as lasers, parametric amplifiers and external compression techniques which have emerged over the last decade are discussed to give researchers and graduate students a thorough introduction to this field. The existence of these sources has opened many new fields of research that were not possible before. These are UV and EUV generation from table-top systems using high-harmonic generation, frequency metrology enabling optical frequency counting, high-resolution optical coherence tomography, strong-field ultrafast solid-state processes and ultrafast spectroscopy, to mention only a few. Many new applications will follow. The book attempts to give a comprehensive, while not excessive, introduction to this exciting new field that serves both experienced researchers and graduate students entering the field. The first half of the book covers the current physical principles, processes and design guidelines to generate pulses in the optical range comprising only a few cycles of light. Such as the generation of relatively low energy pulses at high repetition rates directly from the laser, parametric generation of medium energy pulses and high-energy pulses at low repetition rates using external compression in hollow fibers. The applications cover the revolution in frequency metrology and high-resolution laser spectroscopy to electric field synthesis in the optical range as well as the emerging field of high-harmonic generation and attosecond science, high-resolution optical imaging and novel ultrafast dynamics in semiconductors. These fields benefit from the strong electric fields accompanying these pulses in solids and gases during events comprising only a few cycles of light.

Book excerpt: During the past three years we have made substantial progress toward the goal of a fiber coupled, diode laser pumped 1OOW cw Nd:YAG minislab laser. We have diode pumped a 1W ring cavity laser and have operated it in a single frequency. We have diode pumped a testbed minislab Nd:YAG laser using fiber coupled diode laser bars and generated 5W of cw, TEMoo mode output power. We have designed and are implementing a 5OW cw minislab Nd:YAG laser to be pumped by 25 diode laser bars coupled through optical fibers. We plan, in the second phase of this program, to achieve the 1OOW cw output power level in a minislab Nd:YAG laser approach proposed as the goal of this research program In addition, we have demonstrated single frequency control of a high power Nd:YAG laser oscillator by injection locking; have frequency stabilized Nd:YAG oscillators by locking to high finesse Fabry Perot resonators; have absolutely stabilized Nd:YAG to one part in 10 to the -13th power by locking to iodine; have frequency converted Nd:YAG by second harmonic generation to 11.2W of cw TEMoo mode green output; have demonstrated the first cw 2 microns OPO in lithium niobate; and have demonstrated the first cw singly resonant OPO with 2W of output in a single frequency in KTP.

Book High Power Continuous Wave Nd KGW Laser with Low Quantum Defect Diode Pumping

Download or read book High Power Continuous Wave Nd KGW Laser with Low Quantum Defect Diode Pumping written by Rubel Chandra Talukder and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High power diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) lasers are a rapidly growing technology that is attractive for various applications in scientific and industrial fields. DPSS lasers are highly efficient, reliable and durable with superior beam quality when compared to flash-lamp pumped solid state lasers. Double-tungstate crystal of neodymium-doped potassium gadolinium tungstate (Nd:KGW) is one of the most effective active media used in DPSS lasers for generation of continuous wave radiation and ultrashort (i.e. picosecond, 10-12 s) pulses. Unfortunately, the thermal conductivity of KGW host crystals is relatively low (~3 Wm-1K-1). This low thermal conductivity and large quantum defect while pumping with ~808 nm lead to significant thermo-optical distortions. One way to minimize thermo-optical distortions is to reduce the quantum defect. This can be done by pumping at longer wavelengths as compared to conventional 808 nm. In this work we demonstrate what we believe is the first continuous wave Nd:KGW laser with hot band diode pumping at ~910 nm. This pumping wavelength reduced the quantum defect by >46% as compared to the conventional ~808 nm pumping and resulted in significantly lower thermal lensing. The laser produced 2.9 W of average output power at 1067 nm in a diffraction limited beam for an absorbed pump power of 8.3 W. The slope efficiency and optical-to-optical efficiency were found to be 43% and 35%, respectively. Significant reduction of quantum defect offered by this pumping wavelength and availability of suitable high power laser diodes opens an attractive way to further power and efficiency scaling of the Nd:KGW lasers.
