Book Continuous time Stochastic Control and Optimization with Financial Applications

Download or read book Continuous time Stochastic Control and Optimization with Financial Applications written by Huyên Pham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-28 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stochastic optimization problems arise in decision-making problems under uncertainty, and find various applications in economics and finance. On the other hand, problems in finance have recently led to new developments in the theory of stochastic control. This volume provides a systematic treatment of stochastic optimization problems applied to finance by presenting the different existing methods: dynamic programming, viscosity solutions, backward stochastic differential equations, and martingale duality methods. The theory is discussed in the context of recent developments in this field, with complete and detailed proofs, and is illustrated by means of concrete examples from the world of finance: portfolio allocation, option hedging, real options, optimal investment, etc. This book is directed towards graduate students and researchers in mathematical finance, and will also benefit applied mathematicians interested in financial applications and practitioners wishing to know more about the use of stochastic optimization methods in finance.

Book Stochastic Optimization in Continuous Time

Download or read book Stochastic Optimization in Continuous Time written by Fwu-Ranq Chang and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-26 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2004, this is a rigorous but user-friendly book on the application of stochastic control theory to economics. A distinctive feature of the book is that mathematical concepts are introduced in a language and terminology familiar to graduate students of economics. The standard topics of many mathematics, economics and finance books are illustrated with real examples documented in the economic literature. Moreover, the book emphasises the dos and don'ts of stochastic calculus, cautioning the reader that certain results and intuitions cherished by many economists do not extend to stochastic models. A special chapter (Chapter 5) is devoted to exploring various methods of finding a closed-form representation of the value function of a stochastic control problem, which is essential for ascertaining the optimal policy functions. The book also includes many practice exercises for the reader. Notes and suggested readings are provided at the end of each chapter for more references and possible extensions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As is well known, Pontryagin's maximum principle and Bellman's dynamic programming are the two principal and most commonly used approaches in solving stochastic optimal control problems. * An interesting phenomenon one can observe from the literature is that these two approaches have been developed separately and independently. Since both methods are used to investigate the same problems, a natural question one will ask is the fol lowing: (Q) What is the relationship betwccn the maximum principlc and dy namic programming in stochastic optimal controls? There did exist some researches (prior to the 1980s) on the relationship between these two. Nevertheless, the results usually werestated in heuristic terms and proved under rather restrictive assumptions, which were not satisfied in most cases. In the statement of a Pontryagin-type maximum principle there is an adjoint equation, which is an ordinary differential equation (ODE) in the (finite-dimensional) deterministic case and a stochastic differential equation (SDE) in the stochastic case. The system consisting of the adjoint equa tion, the original state equation, and the maximum condition is referred to as an (extended) Hamiltonian system. On the other hand, in Bellman's dynamic programming, there is a partial differential equation (PDE), of first order in the (finite-dimensional) deterministic case and of second or der in the stochastic case. This is known as a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation.

Book Stochastic Control in Insurance

Download or read book Stochastic Control in Insurance written by Hanspeter Schmidli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-20 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yet again, here is a Springer volume that offers readers something completely new. Until now, solved examples of the application of stochastic control to actuarial problems could only be found in journals. Not any more: this is the first book to systematically present these methods in one volume. The author starts with a short introduction to stochastic control techniques, then applies the principles to several problems. These examples show how verification theorems and existence theorems may be proved, and that the non-diffusion case is simpler than the diffusion case. Schmidli’s brilliant text also includes a number of appendices, a vital resource for those in both academic and professional settings.

Book Relative Optimization of Continuous Time and Continuous State Stochastic Systems

Download or read book Relative Optimization of Continuous Time and Continuous State Stochastic Systems written by Xi-Ren Cao and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-13 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph applies the relative optimization approach to time nonhomogeneous continuous-time and continuous-state dynamic systems. The approach is intuitively clear and does not require deep knowledge of the mathematics of partial differential equations. The topics covered have the following distinguishing features: long-run average with no under-selectivity, non-smooth value functions with no viscosity solutions, diffusion processes with degenerate points, multi-class optimization with state classification, and optimization with no dynamic programming. The book begins with an introduction to relative optimization, including a comparison with the traditional approach of dynamic programming. The text then studies the Markov process, focusing on infinite-horizon optimization problems, and moves on to discuss optimal control of diffusion processes with semi-smooth value functions and degenerate points, and optimization of multi-dimensional diffusion processes. The book concludes with a brief overview of performance derivative-based optimization. Among the more important novel considerations presented are: the extension of the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman optimality condition from smooth to semi-smooth value functions by derivation of explicit optimality conditions at semi-smooth points and application of this result to degenerate and reflected processes; proof of semi-smoothness of the value function at degenerate points; attention to the under-selectivity issue for the long-run average and bias optimality; discussion of state classification for time nonhomogeneous continuous processes and multi-class optimization; and development of the multi-dimensional Tanaka formula for semi-smooth functions and application of this formula to stochastic control of multi-dimensional systems with degenerate points. The book will be of interest to researchers and students in the field of stochastic control and performance optimization alike.

Book Optimal Stochastic Control Stochastic Target Problems and Backward SDE

Download or read book Optimal Stochastic Control Stochastic Target Problems and Backward SDE written by Nizar Touzi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-27 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects some recent developments in stochastic control theory with applications to financial mathematics. We first address standard stochastic control problems from the viewpoint of the recently developed weak dynamic programming principle. A special emphasis is put on the regularity issues and, in particular, on the behavior of the value function near the boundary. We then provide a quick review of the main tools from viscosity solutions which allow to overcome all regularity problems. We next address the class of stochastic target problems which extends in a nontrivial way the standard stochastic control problems. Here the theory of viscosity solutions plays a crucial role in the derivation of the dynamic programming equation as the infinitesimal counterpart of the corresponding geometric dynamic programming equation. The various developments of this theory have been stimulated by applications in finance and by relevant connections with geometric flows. Namely, the second order extension was motivated by illiquidity modeling, and the controlled loss version was introduced following the problem of quantile hedging. The third part specializes to an overview of Backward stochastic differential equations, and their extensions to the quadratic case.

Book Continuous Time Markov Chains and Applications

Download or read book Continuous Time Markov Chains and Applications written by G. George Yin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-14 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a systematic treatment of singularly perturbed systems that naturally arise in control and optimization, queueing networks, manufacturing systems, and financial engineering. It presents results on asymptotic expansions of solutions of Komogorov forward and backward equations, properties of functional occupation measures, exponential upper bounds, and functional limit results for Markov chains with weak and strong interactions. To bridge the gap between theory and applications, a large portion of the book is devoted to applications in controlled dynamic systems, production planning, and numerical methods for controlled Markovian systems with large-scale and complex structures in the real-world problems. This second edition has been updated throughout and includes two new chapters on asymptotic expansions of solutions for backward equations and hybrid LQG problems. The chapters on analytic and probabilistic properties of two-time-scale Markov chains have been almost completely rewritten and the notation has been streamlined and simplified. This book is written for applied mathematicians, engineers, operations researchers, and applied scientists. Selected material from the book can also be used for a one semester advanced graduate-level course in applied probability and stochastic processes.

Book Stochastic Control in Discrete and Continuous Time

Download or read book Stochastic Control in Discrete and Continuous Time written by Atle Seierstad and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-03 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains an introduction to three topics in stochastic control: discrete time stochastic control, i. e. , stochastic dynamic programming (Chapter 1), piecewise - terministic control problems (Chapter 3), and control of Ito diffusions (Chapter 4). The chapters include treatments of optimal stopping problems. An Appendix - calls material from elementary probability theory and gives heuristic explanations of certain more advanced tools in probability theory. The book will hopefully be of interest to students in several ?elds: economics, engineering, operations research, ?nance, business, mathematics. In economics and business administration, graduate students should readily be able to read it, and the mathematical level can be suitable for advanced undergraduates in mathem- ics and science. The prerequisites for reading the book are only a calculus course and a course in elementary probability. (Certain technical comments may demand a slightly better background. ) As this book perhaps (and hopefully) will be read by readers with widely diff- ing backgrounds, some general advice may be useful: Don’t be put off if paragraphs, comments, or remarks contain material of a seemingly more technical nature that you don’t understand. Just skip such material and continue reading, it will surely not be needed in order to understand the main ideas and results. The presentation avoids the use of measure theory.

Book On Stochastic Optimization Problems and an Application in Finance

Download or read book On Stochastic Optimization Problems and an Application in Finance written by Josef Anton Strini and published by Springer Spektrum. This book was released on 2019-05-02 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Josef Anton Strini analyzes a special stochastic optimal control problem. The problem under study arose from a dynamic cash management model in finance, where decisions about the dividend and financing policies of a firm have to be made. Additionally, using the dynamic programming approach, he extends the present discourse by the formal derivation of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation and by examining the verification step carefully. Finally, the treatment is completed by solving the problem numerically.

Book Stochastic Optimal Control in Infinite Dimension

Download or read book Stochastic Optimal Control in Infinite Dimension written by Giorgio Fabbri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing an introduction to stochastic optimal control in infinite dimension, this book gives a complete account of the theory of second-order HJB equations in infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, focusing on its applicability to associated stochastic optimal control problems. It features a general introduction to optimal stochastic control, including basic results (e.g. the dynamic programming principle) with proofs, and provides examples of applications. A complete and up-to-date exposition of the existing theory of viscosity solutions and regular solutions of second-order HJB equations in Hilbert spaces is given, together with an extensive survey of other methods, with a full bibliography. In particular, Chapter 6, written by M. Fuhrman and G. Tessitore, surveys the theory of regular solutions of HJB equations arising in infinite-dimensional stochastic control, via BSDEs. The book is of interest to both pure and applied researchers working in the control theory of stochastic PDEs, and in PDEs in infinite dimension. Readers from other fields who want to learn the basic theory will also find it useful. The prerequisites are: standard functional analysis, the theory of semigroups of operators and its use in the study of PDEs, some knowledge of the dynamic programming approach to stochastic optimal control problems in finite dimension, and the basics of stochastic analysis and stochastic equations in infinite-dimensional spaces.
