Book excerpt: The problem of classifying semigroups of endomorphisms of type [italic]I[subscript]infinity symbol factors to outer conjugacy is reduced to the problem of classifying certain simpler structures associated to them, called product systems. Product systems are intimately connected with continuous tensor products of Hilbert spaces. We develop the general theory of product systems and give a number of applications to semigroups of endomorphisms of von Neumann algebras; in particular, we introduce a numerical invariant for such semigroups which is analogous to the Fredholm index.

Book excerpt: In a series of papers Tsirelson constructed from measure types of random sets or (generalised) random processes a new range of examples for continuous tensor product systems of Hilbert spaces introduced by Arveson for classifying $E_0$-semigroups upto cocycle conjugacy. This paper starts from establishing the converse. So the author connects each continuous tensor product system of Hilbert spaces with measure types of distributions of random (closed) sets in $[0,1]$ or $\mathbb R_+$. These measure types are stationary and factorise over disjoint intervals. In a special case of this construction, the corresponding measure type is an invariant of the product system. This shows, completing in a more systematic way the Tsirelson examples, that the classification scheme for product systems into types $\mathrm{I}_n$, $\mathrm{II}_n$ and $\mathrm{III}$ is not complete. Moreover, based on a detailed study of this kind of measure types, the author constructs for each stationary factorising measure type a continuous tensor product system of Hilbert spaces such that this measure type arises as the before mentioned invariant.

The purpose of the conference was to assess the current state of knowledge and to outline future research directions of quantum dynamical semigroups on von Neumann algebras. Since the appearance of the landmark papers by F. Murray and J. von Neumann, On the Rings of Operators, von Neumann algebras have been used as a mathematical model in the study of time evolution of quantum mechanical systems.Following the work of M. H. Stone, von Neumann, and others on the structure of one-parameter groups of unitary transformations, many researchers have made fundamental contributions to the understanding of time-reversible dynamical systems. This book deals with the mathematics of time-irreversiblesystems, also called dissipative systems. The time parameter is the half-line, and the transformations are now endomorphisms as opposed to automorphisms. For over a decade, W. B. Arveson and R. T. Powers have pioneered the effort to understand the structure of irreversible quantum dynamical systems on von Neumann algebras. Their papers in this volume serve as an excellent introduction to the theory. Also included are contributions in other areas which have had an impact on the theory, such asBrownian motion, dilation theory, quantum probability, and free probability. The volume is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in the dynamics of quantum systems and corresponding topics in the theory of operator algebras.

So the first decision was not to concentrate on a special topic. For different people, the starting points of such a domain may be different. In what concerns this question, different variants are not discussed. One such variant comes from Quantum Physics. The motivations in this book are mainly mathematical; more precisely, they correspond to the desire of developing a probability theory in a new set-up and obtaining results analogous to the classical ones for the newly defined mathematical objects. Also different mathematical foundations of this domain were proposed. This book concentrates on one variant, which may be described as "von Neumann algebras". This is true also for the last chapter, if one looks at its ultimate aim. In the references there are some papers corresponding to other variants; we mention Gudder, S.P. &al (1978). Segal, I.E. (1965) also discusses "basic ideas".

Other uses of groupoids can involve something of a dynamical nature. Indeed, some of the main examples come from group actions. It should also be noted that in many situations where groupoids have been used, the main emphasis has not been on symmetry or dynamics issues. While the implicit symmetry and dynamics are relevant, the groupoid records mostly the structure of the space of leaves and the holonomy. More generally, the use of groupoids is very much related to various notions of orbit equivalance. Book excerpt: This text provides a comprehensive treatment of representations on indefinite metric spaces, and their applications to the theory of *-derivations of C*-algebras. The book consists of two parts. The first studies the geometry of indefinite metric spaces (Krein and (Pi)(kappa)-spaces) and describes the theory of J-symmetric operator algebras and representations of *-algebras and groups on these spaces in a systematic form. For representations on (Pi)(kappa)-spaces, many significant new results are obtained; this establishes a possible approach to the general theory of representations. In the second part, different techniques of the theory of J-symmetric representations on Krein spaces are applied to the theory of *-derivations of C*-algebras implemented by skew-symmetric and dissipative operators. Various results are obtained, which establish a link between the deficiency indices of skew-symmetric operators implementing *-derivations of C*-algebras and dimensions of representations of these algebras. The problem of isomorphism of skew-symmetric operators is also touched upon. Numerous properties of the domains of *-derivations are investigated. These domains constitute an important subclass of differentiable Banach *-algebras, that is dense *-subalgebras of C*-algebras with properties in many respects similar to the properties of algebras of differentiable functions. The Weyl operator commutation relations are examined in the general context of *-derivations of C*-algebras. Powersí and Arvesonís indices of one-parameter semigroups of *-endomorphisms of the algebra B are considered, and various notions of the index of a *-derivation are introduced and studied. Application of the theory of J-symmetric representations on Krein spaces to the theory of *-derivations of C*-algebras is a new research area of growing interest and there are many exciting advances to be made in this field. The book covers a fairly large and complex body of material, and will serve as a stimulus to further research activity in this area.
