Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to research, specifications, materials, design, and construction engineers; contract and specification administrators; agency project managers and staff; and concrete bridge deck construction contractors. This synthesis describes the state of the practice with respect to the development and present status of waterproofing membranes for concrete bridge decks. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the use of waterproofing systems applied to new bridge decks and the rehabilitation of deteriorated concrete bridge decks. In addition, this synthesis describes current practice with regard to methods for assessing the effectiveness of membranes, criteria for use, installation practices, and factors that affect the performance of waterproofing systems in new construction and rehabilitation. Suggestions for future research are also included.

Book Waterproof Membranes for Protection of Concrete Bridge Decks

Download or read book Waterproof Membranes for Protection of Concrete Bridge Decks written by Cecil J. Van Til and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1976 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents and presents the results of a comprehensive assessment of the protective capabilities of all bridge deck waterproofing membranes known to be available when the project started (1970). An extensive program of laboratory testing supplemented by a limited program of field study led to the selection from an original group of 147 systems, five that appeared most promising for more intensive field evaluation. Materials and construction specifications were prepared for the five systems, in addition to an experimental plan for the field evaluation. The new work is being under taken as a second phase of the study.

Book Field Evaluations of Waterproof Membrane Systems for Bridge Decks 1972 1974

Download or read book Field Evaluations of Waterproof Membrane Systems for Bridge Decks 1972 1974 written by Wallace T. McKeel and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waterproof membrane systems are being studied by many agencies from the standpoint of their effectiveness in protecting the reinforcing steel in concrete bridge decks against corrosion. Trial applications and evaluations of six such systems, including both preformed sheet and liquid membranes, were made in Virginia during the period from 1972 through 1974. These field evaluations included observations of the installation procedures and assessments of the subsequent waterproofing effectiveness of the systems through electrical resistivity measurements. While none of the systems could be considered an unqualified success, four of the systems showed promise, with modification of the application techniques used in the study, of providing the desired degree of long-term protection. Specific details of the application techniques and performances of each of the membrane systems are presented as is an evaluation of the effectiveness of earlier epoxy resin sealcoats.

Book Performance Evaluation of Waterproofing Membrane Protective Systems for Concrete Bridge Decks

Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Waterproofing Membrane Protective Systems for Concrete Bridge Decks written by Khossrow Babaei and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study develops a methodology for field appraisal and evaluates the effectiveness of three selected waterproofing membrane installations presently in service in the State of Washington. Based on the information obtained, none of the test installations had completely sealed the passage of salt into the concrete decks. "Active" and "uncertain" corrosion potentials existed at the rehabilitated portions; however, a decrease in corrosion activity since the time of rehabilitation was noted. Concrete deterioration after rehabilitation has occurred mainly within the boundaries of the repair work and original conrete, and it is more evident in areas with a shallower rebar depth. It is recommended that future research include a greater number of bridge decks. In addition, service life performance data should be obtained through long-range monitoring of the installations.

Book Procedures for the Evaluation of Sheet Membrane Waterproofing

Download or read book Procedures for the Evaluation of Sheet Membrane Waterproofing written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheet membrane waterproofing has been used to protect bridge decks against water and deicing salts by transportation agencies in New England for more than two decades. Though such membranes have proven useful at extending the useful life of bridge decks, there are no convenient methods to evaluate one membrane against another. This report details the genesis of blisters, a major problem for membranes, and defines test procedures to evaluate sheet membranes based on their ability to adhere to concrete, accommodate strain, resist puncturing, and pass water vapor. The results of these tests allow an engineer to compare sheet membranes based on material properties but they, alone, cannot be used to predict how well a membrane will perform in practice. Because a laboratory environment does not reflect the complex combination of forces and deterioration mechanisms a membrane is exposed to in the field, a follow-on study of the installation/design process and long-term performance of membranes in actual bridges needs to be conducted. This report provides a needed step toward the ability to predict sheet membrane service life.

Book Measurements with a New Peel Adhesion Test on Waterproof Membranes Used on Concrete Bridge Decks

Download or read book Measurements with a New Peel Adhesion Test on Waterproof Membranes Used on Concrete Bridge Decks written by Qinghua Zhou and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interface adhesion is one of the critical performance criteria to evaluate the engineering properties of the waterproof membrane (WM) used on concrete bridge decks. The standardized methods such as the ones specified by ASTM have provided guidance to conduct interface adhesion tests. However, these methods are not specially designed for a WM used on concrete bridge decks, and ASTM D3359 is a qualitative test for evaluation of peel strength. Meanwhile, the interface adhesion is affected by a myriad of sophisticated field conditions. Accordingly, this research investigates the interface adhesion strength of the WM using a new 90° peel test. Laboratory and field tests were conducted in which the influences of peeling speed, use of subcoat, and construction temperature were taken into account. The four-point bending fatigue test on a WM was designed to account for the influences of repeated vehicle loadings on adhesion strength. Test results indicate that peel strength increases with increasing peeling speed, while it increases initially and then decreases with increasing the construction temperature of the WM and the content of subcoat. It is also found that peel strength has a linear log-log relationship with fatigue loading cycles.
