Download or read book Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology Vol 7 T Cells written by Osis Stutman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: And even I can remember A day when historians left blanks in their writings, I mean for things they didn't know. -Ezra Pound, Canto XIII * The prefaces to the previous volumes of this series have all expressed in various ways the actual motivation behind these collective efforts. There was agreement in most instances that we are facing some kind of publication explosion, and that the present type of compact and personalized reviews may be of help, from both a conceptual and a purely informational standpoint. The aims of the series were, and still are, to focus attention on the rapidly changing fields within the realm of immunology, and to present in each chapter the summation of results generated by an investigator or group of Investigators, either as an analysis of their own work or as a correlation of such work with the general field in question. The present volume does not differ in its construction from its predecessors, although it does concentrate on a single target, the T lymphocyte and its biology. The selection of subjects as well as contributors has been the sole responsi bility of this editor; however, the actual format and length of the individual contributions was left to the discretion and inspiration of the different authors. Even the styles, ranging from the concise statement to the meticulously detailed review, attest to the freedom of format.

Book Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology

Download or read book Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology written by Noel Warner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this current volume of Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology we have chosen to continue with the multiple-theme approach that was developed in Volumes 1, 3, and 5 of this series. Immunobiology still shows little sign of decreasing its active growth rate, but rather is continuing to broaden its range of interests and applications, particularly as new techniques and methods are adapted from other fields of medical research. This present volume reflects both several of the more classical areas of immunology now addressed in the light of contemporary immunology, and several newer directions that have been taken in other fields. The general subject of T-cell heterogeneity and functions of T-cell subpop ulations is addressed in Chapters 1 and 2. The potential role of genes of the major histocompatibility complex in controlling the immune functions of T lymphocytes still remains a major unresolved issue in immunogenetics, and the current status of this problem is excellently reviewed by J. F. A. P. Miller. The further elucidation of functional subpopulations of human T lymphocytes has been particularly hampered by the lack of available markers for character izing and isolating such sUbpopulations. A major step in this direction has been made by L. Moretta, M. Ferrarini, and M. D. Cooper, who review their ex perience with Fc-receptor-bearing human T-Iymphocyte populations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary immunobiology is an ever-diversifying field that embraces many aspects of cellular and humoral immune responsiveness. This includes the phylogeny, ontogeny, induction, regulation, expression, and differentiation of the immune-cell series, as well as the relationship of these to the pathogenesis of many disease processes. It is clearly beyond the limitations of each volume in this series to comprehensively cover progress in each of these fields. Three general areas of contemporary investigations are discussed in the current issue: cellular events of B cell differentiation, including antigen recognition and respon siveness of B lymphocytes; regulation of the immune response by T cells, and the roles of this regulatory system in allotype suppression and in autoimm unity; and the genetic control of immune responses and its possible relation to disease pathogenesis. Analysis of responsiveness of B lymphocytes has been greatly aided by the availability of athymic nude mice. The immunological responsiveness of these mice to a wide range of stimuli has been reviewed and analyzed by H. H. Wortis. This article concludes with the provocative thesis that in the future "nudes will supply new rather than confirmatory data . . . (especially regarding) the develop ment of neoplasia. " In contrast to the studies on the congenitally athymic mice, G. F.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the field of contemporary immunobiology continues to diversify and encompass an increasing array of biomedical disciplines and topics, there are frequently several themes that will receive special emphasis and prominence at any given time. It is our hope that this series will reflect these themes and pro vide an appropriate venue for exposure of such topics at a useful time. Although this particular volume is not designated as one of the special topics volumes in this series, the selected topics have in essence come together to con sider aspects of two major areas of considerable research interest in immuno biology today. These concern new approaches and insights into an understanding of the tumor-host relationship, and aspects of cellular interactions and networks as approached by various different lines of investigation. The province of tumor immunology remains one of the most challenging areas to immunologists, as it of necessity involves not only developing an under standing of the neoplastic process itself and how the immune system responds, but of eventually using this information in a diagnostic or therapeutic manner.

Book excerpt: This second volume of Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology considers many aspects of thymus dependency in order to exemplify the role of the thy mus in different species and different immunological responses. It is not in tended to be a compendium of the responses which have been shown to be thymus dependent but rather to illustrate for the reader the criteria he should apply in thinking about the significance of the thymus in immune responses. We are grateful to the editors and publishers of the Annals of the New York Academy of Science, the Australian Journal of Experimental Biology and Medical Science, Clinical and Experimental Immunology, Immunology, the Journal of Experimental Medicine, the Journal of Immunology, Laboratory Investigation, Nature, and the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Medicine and to Springer-Verlag, Berlin, for permission to reproduce illustrations. Book Contemporary Topics in Molecular Immunology

Download or read book Contemporary Topics in Molecular Immunology written by R. A. Reisfeld and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New information is developing so rapidly in the entire field of immunology that one is unable to remain abreast of all advancing fronts. In many cases, consider able information has accumulated as the result of the efforts of many investigators, but the conclusions from the various laboratories have not been summarized recently in a comprehensible manner. One such situation has to do with work on IgD. An up-to-date report on this immunoglobulin was included in Volume 10f this series, but since that time there has been considerable progress in the deter mination of its structure and function. In the present volume Leslie and Martin have reviewed the accomplishments of recent years and the problems remaining to be solved. New information regarding the concentration of IgD in body fluids in normal and disease states is presented. Studies of the ontogeny of surface IgD in animals are described, and the fmdings imply that it may be important in the primary immune response. The role of IgD on lymphocyte surfaces is thoroughly discussed especially in terms of stimulating or suppressive combinations of signals delivered to the lymphocyte by agents which bind or alter the surface rt:ceptors. The authors conclude by proposing a model for plasma-cell differentiation which accounts fo~ the existence of triple Ig-bearing cells, many IgM-IgD-bearing cells, and the low percentage of cells bearing a single isotype. Sometimes the serum of an individual contains abnormally large amounts of two distinct, homogeneous populations of immunoglobulins.

The authors have the experi ence and ability to bridge the entire field of transplantation and their article encompasses both clinical and immunochemical data in this area. Their data show clearly that matches for the DR antigens are more important than those at the ABC loci in determination of graft survival. Additional relevant factors, in cluding autoimmunity and other B-cell antigens, are discussed and correlated with graft survival. The authors also present pathology data concerning the distribution of HLA-DR antigens in various tissues. These data indicate a fruitful area for future investigations on the chemical aspects of the various antigens encoded within the human MHC. Do changes in the structure of lymphocyte surface glycoproteins, especially changes in their carbohydrate portions, occur during normal lymphoid differen tiation? Information about this question is limited, and pertinent data are avail able for only a few proteins. Three of the proteins are major glycoprotein con stituents of rodent thymocyte membranes: the Thy-! antigen, a glycosylated leukocyte sialoglycoprotein called W3/13, and a high-molecular-weight glycopro tein known as the leukocyte-common antigen. In his contribution, Pink thor oughly characterizes these glycoproteins and discusses the evidence that the structures change when a thymocyte differentiates into a mature, peripheral T cell. A comparison is drawn between lymphocyte glycoprotein changes and those that occur during red blood cell differentiation. The reader will find Pink's discourse informative and provocative. Mast cells, basophils, and related tumor lines bind IgE with very high affinity.

Book Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology

Download or read book Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology written by John J. Marchalonis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem that virtually all cells have in discriminating between "self" and "non-self" molecules and cells has been considered at great length in immuno biology. However, cells that clearly are incapable of carrying out mammalian type immune functions can exhibit exquisite specificity in their capacity to discriminate among syngeneic, allogeneic, and xenogeneic cells. In this volume of Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology we have chosen to consider the general problem of self/non-self discrimination as it is manifest in recognition reactions of plants and invertebrates and in the evolutionary development of the immune response of vertebrates. A broad, many-faceted approach is taken toward fundamental issues in immunobiology in order to develop innovative concepts of receptor function as well as to delineate traditional views. The capacity of plants to discriminate between self and non-self is addressed in Chapter 1 by R. B. Knox and Adrienne E. Clarke. These authors provide examples of cell-cell recognition in plants that parallel those occurring in in vertebrates and vertebrates. In general, tolerance (acceptance) of grafts is re stricted to plants within closely related genera. Recognition is mediated by callus cells, which proliferate at wound surfaces in higher plants, and there is a correlation between cell and tissue type and antigenic markers detectable with the use of mammalian antibodies. Certain flowering plants exhibit precise discrimination in fertilization, when pollen must be from the same species, but fertilization occurs only if the pollen is genetically non-self.
