Book Aesthetics of Values

Download or read book Aesthetics of Values written by Claudio Rozzoni and published by Aesthetics. This book was released on 2021 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within a landscape, such as the contemporary one, in which studies on the notion of the image proliferate through multiple disciplinary fields, the book Aesthetics of Values. Contemporary Perspectives proposes a path dedicated to the analysis of the status of the image, taking its relationship with the notion of value as a starting point. The project stems from the collaboration between the "Art, Critique and Aesthetic Experience" group of the Nova Institute of Philosophy (IFILNOVA) of the University of Lisbon and the European Aesthetic Seminar on "images, emotions, values" (http: // sites.unimi.it/eu_aesthetics/). In particular, the proposed chapters intend to develop the contributions made during the international seminar "Aesthetics of Values" held in Lisbon in February 2017, during which some of the most authoritative voices of Aesthetic studies on the subject intervened. The volume should also fill a gap in the field of studies on value aesthetics, at a time when, in spite of the proliferation of works dedicated to this topic in the analytical field, the need is felt, as recently underlined by an author of the calibre of Peter Lamarque, for research that returns to investigate the theme of aesthetic value starting from the analysis of experience.

Book Tragic Beauty in Whitehead and Japanese Aesthetics

Download or read book Tragic Beauty in Whitehead and Japanese Aesthetics written by Steve Odin and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-05-19 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume endeavors to make a contribution to contemporary Whitehead studies by clarifying his axiological process metaphysics, including his theory of values, concept of aesthetic experience, and doctrine of beauty, along with his philosophy of art, literature and poetry. Moreover, it establishes an east-west dialogue focusing on how Alfred North Whitehead’s process aesthetics can be clarified by the traditional Japanese Buddhist sense of evanescent beauty. As this east-west dialogue unfolds it is shown that there are many striking points of convergence between Whitehead’s process aesthetics and the traditional Japanese sense of beauty. However, the work especially focuses on two of Whitehead’s aesthetic categories, including the penumbral beauty of darkness and the tragic beauty of perishability, while further demonstrating parallels with the two Japanese aesthetic categories of yûgen and aware. It is clarified how both Whitehead and the Japanese tradition have articulated a poetics of evanescence that celebrates the transience of aesthetic experience and the ephemerality of beauty. Finally it is argued that both Whitehead and Japanese tradition develop an aesthetics of beauty as perishability culminating in a religio-aesthetic vision of tragic beauty and its reconciliation in the supreme ecstasy of peace or nirvana.

Download or read book Early Modern Aesthetics written by J. Colin McQuillan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Modern Aesthetics is a concise and accessible guide to the history of aesthetics in the early modern period. J. Colin McQuillan shows how philosophers concerned with art and beauty positioned themselves with respect to the ancients and the moderns, how they thought the arts were to be distinguished and classified, the principles they proposed for art and literary criticism, and how they made aesthetics a part of philosophy in the eighteenth century. The book explores the controversies that arose among philosophers with different views on these issues, their relation to the philosophy, science, and art, and their legacy for contemporary aesthetics.

Book Aesthetic Experience

Download or read book Aesthetic Experience written by George Hagman and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "George Hagman looks anew at psychoanalytic ideas about art and beauty through the lens of current developmental psychology that recognizes the importance of attachment and affiliative motivational systems. In dialogue with theorists such as Freud, Ehrenzweig, Kris, Rank, Winnicott, Kohut, and many others, Hagman brings the psychoanalytic understanding of aesthetic experience into the 21st century. He amends and extends old concepts and offers a wealth of stimulating new ideas regarding the creative process, the ideal, beauty, ugliness, and -perhaps his most original contribution-the sublime. Especially welcome is his grounding of aesthetic experience in intersubjectivity and health rather than individualism and pathology. His emphasis on form rather than the content of an individual's aesthetic experience is a stimulating new direction for psychoanalytic theory of art. With this work Hagman stands in the company of his predecessors with this deeply-learned, sensitively conceived, and provocative general theory of human aesthetic experience."Ellen Dissanayake, author of "Art and Intimacy: How the Arts Began" and "Homo Aestheticus: Where Art Comes From and Why."

Book excerpt: This book is a collection of translations of recent work by contemporary Chinese aestheticians. Because of the relative isolation of China until recently, little is known of this rich and ongoing aesthetics tradition in China. Although some of the articles are concerned with the traditional ancient Chinese theories of art and beauty, many are inspired by Western aesthetics, including Marxism, and all are involved in cross-cultural comparisons of Chinese and Western aesthetic traditions.

Book How Folklore Shaped Modern Art

Download or read book How Folklore Shaped Modern Art written by Wes Hill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1990s, artists and art writers around the world have increasingly undermined the essentialism associated with notions of "critical practice." We can see this manifesting in the renewed relevance of what were previously considered "outsider" art practices, the emphasis on first-person accounts of identity over critical theory, and the proliferation of exhibitions that refuse to distinguish between art and the productions of culture more generally. How Folklore Shaped Modern Art: A Post-Critical History of Aesthetics underscores how the cultural traditions, belief systems and performed exchanges that were once integral to the folklore discipline are now central to contemporary art’s "post-critical turn." This shift is considered here as less a direct confrontation of critical procedures than a symptom of art’s inclusive ideals, overturning the historical separation of fine art from those "uncritical" forms located in material and commercial culture. In a global context, aesthetics is now just one of numerous traditions informing our encounters with visual culture today, symptomatic of the pull towards an impossibly pluralistic image of art that reflects the irreducible conditions of identity.

Book Essays on Aesthetic Education for the 21st Century

Download or read book Essays on Aesthetic Education for the 21st Century written by Tracie Costantino and published by . This book was released on 2010-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on Aesthetic Education for the 21st Century, co-edited by Tracie Costantino and Boyd White, brings together an international collection of authors representing diverse viewpoints to engage in dialogue about the ongoing critical relevance of aesthetics for contemporary art education. Inspired by a conference symposium in which the four authors in the first section of the text, titled Initiating a Dialogue, explore a range of concepts including aesthetic experience, beauty, wonder, and aisthetics, this book enlarges the dialogue with eight additional chapters by authors from North America and Europe. In addition to chapters that address issues of social awareness, curriculum theory and research, and applications to practice with pre-service teachers, there are several chapters that acknowledge historical influences on current notions of aesthetics as a basis on which to open the gate into the twenty-first century. This book will be a valuable resource for graduate students in art education and curriculum studies, as well as practicing art educators, pre-service teachers, and anyone interested in the significance of aesthetics, not only in contemporary art education but the wider field of general education as well.

Book The Aesthetic Dimension of Visual Culture

Download or read book The Aesthetic Dimension of Visual Culture written by Jakub Stejskal and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can aesthetic enquiry contribute to the study of visual culture? There seems to be little doubt that aesthetic theory ought to be of interest to the study of visual culture. For one thing, aesthetic vocabulary has far from vanished from contemporary debates on the nature of our visual experiences and its various shapes, a fact especially pertinent where dissatisfaction with vulgar value relativism prevails. Besides, the very question—ubiquitous in the debates on visual culture—of what is natural and what is acquired in our visual experiences has been a topic in aesthetics at least since the Enlightenment. And last but not least, despite attempts to study visual culture without employing the concept of art, there is no prospect of this central subject of aesthetic theory ebbing away from visual studies. The essays compiled in this volume show a variety of points of intersection and involvement between aesthetics and visual studies; some consider the future of visual art, some the conditions and characteristics of contemporary visual aesthetic experience, while others take on the difficult question of the relation between visual representation and reality. What unites them is their authors’ willingness to think about contemporary visual culture in the conceptual frame of aesthetics. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of philosophical aesthetics, art history, and cultural studies.
