Book The Spanish Style House

Download or read book The Spanish Style House written by and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luminous new photography showcases contemporary and historic homes in the beloved Spanish Style in Southern California, while offering, as well, a rare look at the original inspirations to the style, born in Andalusia, Spain. The great appeal of Spanish Style homes lies in their aura of romance and drama, a sense of story, of magic, as well as in their very comfortable and engaging proportions and the great livability of the interior spaces. Deep shadow, arched doorways, trickling courtyard fountains, climbing bougainvillea on wrought-iron window grilles, wood-beamed ceilings, and white plaster walls are all hallmarks of the style. Here, through a celebration of contemporary and historic homes in Southern California, as well as existing historic precedents in Andalusia, Spain--most notably the intricately detailed Casa de Pilatos in Seville and the Alhambra of Granada--The Spanish Style House presents the definitive picture of the style as it exists today. Featured homes include the George Washington Smith-designed Casa Blanca (1928)--a fantasy made real in stone and stucco replete with the romance of old Morocco in its horseshoe arches, domes, and evocative tile murals--and a Marc Appleton-designed beach house (2007) in Del Mar, California, which is a dream on the sea and an eloquent testament to the virtues of the style for today.

Book excerpt: Differences brings together ten essays written over the past decade by the distinguished Spanish architect and theorist Ignasi de Solà-Morales. Differences brings together ten essays written over the past decade by the distinguished Spanish architect and theorist Ignasi de Sola-Morales. Many of the essays have never previously been translated, and the author has provided a new introduction especially for this English edition. Contemplating the panorama of contemporary art and architecture, de Sola-Morales posits that there is no one way to describe today's practice; instead he concentrates on elucidating the present dynamic of contrast, diversity, and tension. In an unorthodox pairing, de Sola-Morales derives his inspiration from both phenomenology and Deleuzean poststructuralism. Combining these philosophical inheritances allows him to reinvoke the human subject without referring to classical humanism or announcing the death of the object. His retrospective review of the disciplines of art and architecture, particularly as they have developed since World War II, provokes him to design, draft, and ultimately build a description of Modernism¹s lineage of subjectivity. The result is a provocative construction of fluid "topographies" that articulate, rather than depict, the shaky ground on which our current artistic and architectural production rests. The essays: Sado-masochism: Criticism and Architectural Practice. Topographies of Contemporary Architecture. Mies van der Rohe and Minimalism. Architecture and Existentialism. Weak Architecture. From Autonomy to Untimeliness. Place: Permanence or Production. Difference and Limit: Individualism in Contemporary Architecture. High-Tech: Functionalism or Rhetoric. The Work of Architecture in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.

Book Caltech s Architectural Heritage

Download or read book Caltech s Architectural Heritage written by Romy Wyllie and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2000-06 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The campus of the California Institute of Technology was destined for architectural greatness when, in 1915, the university's visionary founder, astronomer George Ellery Hale, retained one of New York's preeminent architects, Bertram Goodhue, to devise a master plan for 22 acres of orange groves in what was then rural Pasadena. Goodhue's eclectic "planted patios and shaded portales, sheltering walls, and Persian pools" set the tone for the campus's illustrious architectural future. Throughout the first half of the century, Caltech's nearly continuous expansion would spawn such architectural jewels as the Athenaeum, a combination Italian villa and Spanish hacienda; Greene and Greene's bungalow-style student union; and the gardens of landscape architects Beatrix Ferrand and Florence Yoch, who thoughtfully mixed the campus's Mediterranean themes with its natural California setting. Well-researched and informative, this book details the organizational and architectural elements that have made Caltech a model for scientific institutions the world over. Rare photographs of lost and altered buildings portray an early Pasadena with ambitious plans to become a cultural mecca, while contemporary images reflect the Institute's continued dedication to a rich architectural future.

Book Guide to Contemporary Architecture in Le n

Download or read book Guide to Contemporary Architecture in Le n written by Esaú Acosta Pérez and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leon, a nexus where urban and rural fabrics interweave, is the city of origin of paradigmatic examples of Spanish architecture committed to a contemporary outlook. The first contemporary projects of the seventies served as exemplary architectural models for the development of the current mindset. The pioneers of Leon, Alejandro de la Sota, Javier Carvajal and Fray Coello de Portugal, paved the way for today's architects, such as Dominique Perrault, Mansilla and Tunon, and the young architects from León who compiled this guide that points towards global solutions for relocated territories from a local perspective. This guide to architecture in Leon is both open and systematic, and documents the contributions made by architecture to the construction of the city. Fifteen years of architecture in Leon are recorded through the texts of Dominique Perrault, Moises Puente, F. Javier Gutieerrez and the SIC studio, exploring distinct moments in space and time of the architecture of this region.

Book Arquitectos Mexicanos

Download or read book Arquitectos Mexicanos written by Fernando de Haro Lebrija and published by Watson-Guptill Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
