Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary Politics in the Far East During the past year there have occurred in the Far East events no less important than were those of 1894-1898, 1900, 1904-1905, and 1911 - 1912, but, so fully has the great war in Europe occupied the attention of the Western world, most of us have given little thought to the affairs of China and Japan. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary Politics in the Far East Twenty years ago the oldest, the largest, the most populous country in the world - a huge continental empire long accustomed to esteem itself the sole repository of national strength and substance - was defeated in war and invaded by the armed forces of a little insular neighbor. In the treaty which followed, the partitioning of China was begun. Japan's success in dealing with China encouraged European governments to press demands for territorial and other privileges, and there ensued the "scramble for concessions" which marked the years 1894-1898. One after another the leading European powers acquired material "compensations" and staked out "spheres of influence" at China's expense. In 1899 the Government of the United States, departing from the theoretical dictates and traditions of American foreign policy, asserted its practical interest in what was occurring in the Far East by coming forward as the champion of the "open door" policy. Writing just after the issuing of Secretary Hay's "open door" notes and just on the eve of the Boxer uprising, Dr. Paul S. Reinsch, then a professor at the University of Wisconsin, and now American Minister to China, said: "The suddenness with which the entire perspective of the political world has been changed by recent developments in China is unprecedented. That country, without question, has become the focal point of international politics. Vast interests are there under contention - even the very composition of the world civilization of the future is at stake upon the issue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern China: A Political Study This book is an attempt to deal with some of the im portant problems which confront the Chinese statesman and diplomat, and those who have anything to do with China. It has been the author's hope to give a true picture of things in the Far East and to suggest constructive schemes for every subject touched upon. He has tried to avoid patriotic bias and to discuss politics with disinterestedness; and it is hoped that he has not altogether failed in his efforts. The world has become small through the rapid means of communication and through the economic interdependence of its different parts, and it is certain that, before many years have passed, a country with a territory extending over four million square miles and with a population of nearly four hundred millions, will play a far more important part in the intellectual and economic developments of the world than it does at present. It will indeed be most gratifying to the author should this book afford some food for thought to readers interested in human progress and international relations. Book Problems of the Middle East Classic Reprint

Download or read book Problems of the Middle East Classic Reprint written by Angus Hamilton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of the Middle East The problems which go to the make-up of this book have been selected as representative of the issues of the political conditions in 'the Middle East. The reader will observe that a study of the Young Turks Party, together with a comprehensive survey of the relations of Korea with certain Powers, has been included, and by just so much the questions presented in this volume exceed the accepted political limitations of the Middle East. It is at best very difficult, if not impossible, to confine the political interests of the Middle East Within their geographical boundaries. The ties between Great Britain and Japan, which at one time might have brought an Asiatic Power to the active support of Great Britain in defence of anglo-indian inter ests, reveal in one direction the elastic character of the politics of the region. In another the Baghdad Railway, which links Near and Middle Eastern interests by indis soluble bonds, imparts a special Significance to the recent changes in the Ottoman Empire. The indulgence of the reader and of the reviewers therefore is asked, since no study of Middle Eastern politics can avoid encroaching a little upon those of the Near East and of the Far East. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Far East and the New America, Vol. 2: A Picturesque and Historic Account of These Lands and Peoples Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of Japan to the United States. The rapid progress which the Japanese Empire has made within a comparatively brief period seems to be a source of surprise to foreign observers. They apparently believe that Japan has Sprung almost at a single bound from mediaeval barbarism to modern civilisation. Only two score and ten years ago Europeans and Americans had nothing but the vaguest ideas concerning the Empire and its people. It is perhaps natural that they should now be astonished when they behold Japan in full enjoyment of the comity of nations, amply proving her capacity to administer constitutional government and justifying her title to all international rights and privileges. Future Relations With the Far East; 4. Investments and Concessions as Causes of International Conflict Side by side with the growth of foreign trade has been the progress Of industrial development. Many parts of China are dotted with mines operated by scientific methods and factories equipped with modern machinery. In a great number Of the larger cities the aspect is much like the busy manufacturing centres in the United States; there, as here, the blue of the sky is soiled by the clouds Of smoke emitted incessantly from the chimneys Of big factories, and the still air is disturbed by the hum of machinery, the scream of whistles, the roar of trains, and all the voices of progress familiar to you. Book Classics the Culture Wars and Beyond

Download or read book Classics the Culture Wars and Beyond written by Eric Adler and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with a short intellectual history of the academic culture wars, Eric Adler’s book examines popular polemics including those by Allan Bloom and Dinesh D’Souza, and considers the oddly marginal role of classical studies in these conflicts. In presenting a brief history of classics in American education, the volume sheds light on the position of the humanities in general. Adler dissects three significant controversies from the era: the so-called AJP affair, which supposedly pitted a conservative journal editor against his feminist detractors; the brouhaha surrounding Martin Bernal’s contentious Black Athena project; and the dustup associated with Victor Davis Hanson and John Heath’s fire-breathing jeremiad, Who Killed Homer? He concludes by considering these controversies as a means to end the crisis for classical studies in American education. How can the study of antiquity—and the humanities—thrive in the contemporary academy? This book provides workable solutions to end the crisis for classics and for the humanities as well. This major work also includes findings from a Web survey of American classical scholars, offering the first broadly representative impression of what they think about their discipline and its prospects for the future. Adler also conducted numerous in-depth interviews with participants in the controversies discussed, allowing readers to gain the most reliable information possible about these controversies. Those concerned about the liberal arts and the best way to educate young Americans should read this book. Accessible and jargon-free, this narrative of scholarly scandals and their context makes for both enjoyable and thought-provoking reading.

Section I in the same chapter has been revised since the Armistice, and again since the signing of the Peace Treaty.
