Book Contemporary Marathi Cinema

Download or read book Contemporary Marathi Cinema written by Hrishikesh Sudhakar Ingle and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-12-10 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-millennial Marathi cinema is a dynamic and expanding practice that is celebrated as a “new-wave” but has not received much critical engagement. This book presents the first comprehensive inquiry of contemporary films and examines their textual, industrial, and cultural intersections to understand what constitutes the “new-ness” of Marathi cinema. Establishing the vernacular particularity of Marathi cinema, the book argues that newage films are actively engaged in a reflexive intellectual and social critique as a mark of new filmmaking in India. In the diversity of genres and topics handled by Marathi filmmakers since 2004 this study identifies four broad affective topographies for analysis – an imagery of nostalgia underpinning the narrative strategies of Marathi films, the articulation of social aspiration as a theme as well as a societal dialectic, an experiential reflexivity in the representation of Dalit and marginal narratives, and a mediatic network of border-crossings through transnational influences on films. Contemporary Marathi Cinema: Space, Marginality, and Aspiration offers a critical dialogue on broad issues of film policy, multiplex economics, genre forms, queer politics, and neoliberal contexts. It will be indispensable to students and researchers of Indian cinemas, regional filmmaking, media, cultural studies, popular culture and performance, literature, and South Asian studies, and will also be of interest to filmmakers and cinephiles.

Book A Socio Political History of Marathi Theatre

Download or read book A Socio Political History of Marathi Theatre written by Makarand Sathe and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the major trends in Marathi theatre, this three-volume set presents a detailed history of the development of modern Marathi theatre. The work is written in the form of a dialogue between a writer and a clown, where the clown goes on to educate the writer, by narrating to him the history of Marathi theatre, taking him through its inception in 1842 to 1985. Originally written in Marathi, this encyclopaedic work would narrate a social history of Maharashtra and of India as seen through the window of theatre. The narration proceeds through thirty nights, loosely following the structure of Arabian Nights, woven around the question, 'Who am I?' The methodology that Sathe follows is complex but systematic and logical as it is predicated on a sound understanding of both history and culture. He views theatre as a cultural construct shaped by the dialectical interaction between the playwright and the cultural political ethos around. The three volumes present the various stages of the historical development of modern Marathi theatre. The conversations between the writer and the clown take place at night; each night is progressively devoted to the discussion of certain historical stages.

Book excerpt: This book traces the journey of popular Hindi cinema from 1913 to contemporary times when Bollywood has evolved as a part of India’s cultural diplomacy. Avoiding a linear, developmental narrative, the book re-examines the developments through the ruptures in the course of cinematic history. The essays in the volume critically consider transformations of the Hindi film industry from its early days to its present self-referential mode, issues of gender, dance and choreography, Bombay cinema’s negotiations with the changing cityscape and urbanisms, and concentrate on its multifarious regional, national and transnational implications in the 21st century. One of the most comprehensive volumes on Bollywood, this work presents an analytical overview of the multiple histories of popular cinema in India and will be useful to scholars and researchers interested in film and media studies, South Asian popular culture and modern India, as well as to cinephiles and general readers alike.

Book Trends in Contemporary Assamese Theatre

Download or read book Trends in Contemporary Assamese Theatre written by Namrata Pathak and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-27 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the very nature of representation to be theatrical and self-referential. This book undercuts the fact that all representational knowledge is autonomous and sovereign. At times, theatrical representations can misguide and mislead. Representation can also ineluctably project ones own preferences and preoccupations. Thus, representation and subjective interpretation divulge into myriad domains. This book is concerned with the effects and consequences of representation and its politics. This book examines not only how language as well as representation produce meaning, but also how discursive knowledge connected to power regulates, conducts, and constructs identities and defines the way certain things are thought about practices and are studied. The book takes note of the fact that within the framework of performance, a performative subject does not wear a coherent identity as it is fragmented, decentered, simulated and is unstable, while being both virtual as well as actual. In the field of semiotics, theatre is historically and reciprocally affected by practice, especially within contingent conditions of time. In theatre semiotics, the new image of knowledge is that of turbulence. Here, knowledge is not so much a system as it is a confluence. Carrying this stance further we can say that contemporary Assamese theatre is characterised by shifting counter-voices and sub-textual underpinnings. This act forces reading into two directions: dialogic openness and variability of meaning that question the theatre directors as the only ones who know.

Book Marathi Cinema Cultural Space and Liminality

Download or read book Marathi Cinema Cultural Space and Liminality written by Hrishikesh Sudhakar Ingle and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a critical history of Marathi cinema, from its formative years in the 1920s till the end of 1990s. It is the first work to explore the industrial and aesthetic dynamics of Marathi cinema, and elaborate on the idea of region as performance using the framework of critical socio-spatial analysis. Against the dominance of Hindi cinema, the Marathi film industry, as a regional film practice in India, has developed within a cultural and spatial liminality. This historical situation of the Marathi film industry is formulated here as the shaping and dispersal of a vernacular cultural space; and is traced over a period of seven decades, across genres like the saint-film, social melodramas, and the tamasha film, as well as in urban and mofussil sites of film circulation. The book aims to be a useful resource for students, researchers, and general readers, while attending to a lack of scholarly inquiries on this important regional film culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a novel approach to the world of adaptations through an intense cross-cultural study. The concept of ‘adaptation’ is extensively discussed here, exploring its meaning and relevance, as well as the various forms it takes. The book investigates what happens when three 20th century European plays, considered as landmark works of the age, are adapted to the Indian context in three different languages; discussing the dynamics and the results of this. It takes us into the minds of the creators – playwrights, adapters, directors, actors, and producers, and ‘others’. The interviews with directors who suffused the western plays with Indian flavor and served them to the local audience also provide valuable insights about theatrical, cultural, and ideological concerns. It also represents an interesting collection of examples and analogies hand-picked from the wide space of literature, theatre, and cinema. It offers a comprehensive base for a thorough understanding of adaptations and the allied multi-disciplinary issues.
