It demonstrates a comparison between important electoral procedures in India and those in other liberal democracies (Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and South Africa, among others) to highlight the role of electoral institutions in democratisation. Book excerpt: The first thorough study of the co-existence of crime and democratic processes in Indian politics In India, the world s largest democracy, the symbiotic relationship between crime and politics raises complex questions. For instance, how can free and fair democratic processes exist alongside rampant criminality? Why do political parties recruit candidates with reputations for wrongdoing? Why are one-third of state and national legislators elected and often re-elected in spite of criminal charges pending against them? In this eye-opening study, political scientist Milan Vaishnav mines a rich array of sources, including fieldwork on political campaigns and interviews with candidates, party workers, and voters, large surveys, and an original database on politicians backgrounds to offer the first comprehensive study of an issue that has implications for the study of democracy both within and beyond India s borders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present anthology is a collection of fifteen research papers which critically explore the multiple dimensions of contemporary literary theory. It provides a wide spectrum of theories and shows their application to different texts across the globe. The twentieth and twenty-first centuries were witness to three major movements, namely Marxism, Feminism and Postcolonialism, which have led to a serious reconsidering of the so-called metanarratives of literature, science, history, economics, philosophy and anthropology. These movements have brought together a wide variety of human discourses, and have made literary theory an interdisciplinary body of cultural theory which has now become an important model of inquiry into the intricacies and complexities of human existence. The anthology includes articles on poststructuralism, postcolonialism, postmodernism, postfeminism, orientalism, nationalist and hegemonic discourses, subalternity, gender identity, eco-criticism and global aesthetics by eminent scholars and critics.

Book Censorship and Sexuality in Bombay Cinema

Download or read book Censorship and Sexuality in Bombay Cinema written by Monika Mehta and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2012-08-24 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India produces an impressive number of films each year in a variety of languages. Here, Monika Mehta breaks new ground by analyzing Hindi films and exploring the censorship of gender and heterosexuality in Bombay cinema. She studies how film censorship on various levels makes the female body and female sexuality pivotal in constructing national identity, not just through the films themselves but also through the heated debates that occur in newspapers and other periodicals. The standard claim is that the state dictates censorship and various prohibitions, but Mehta explores how relationships among the state, the film industry, and the public illuminate censorship's role in identity formation, while also examining how desire, profits, and corruption are generated through the act of censoring. Committed to extending a feminist critique of mass culture in the global south, Mehta situates the story of censorship in a broad social context and traces the intriguing ways in which the heated debates on sexuality in Bombay cinema actually produce the very forms of sexuality they claim to regulate. She imagines afresh the theoretical field of censorship by combining textual analysis, archival research, and qualitative fieldwork. Her analysis reveals how central concepts of film studies, such as stardom, spectacle, genre, and sound, are employed and (re)configured within the ambit of state censorship, thereby expanding the scope of their application and impact.
