Skinner’s radical behaviorism and renew its legacy. The death of behaviorism has been proclaimed since its early days – a “premature” assessment, to say the least – but this volume shows that behaviorism is alive and kicking, even thirty years after its main proponent passed away. This volume contains seven sections, each one dedicated to a particular variation of contemporary behaviorism: Howard Rachlin’s teleological behaviorism, William Baum’s molar behaviorism and multiscale behavior analysis, John Staddon’s theoretical behaviorism, John Donahoe’s biological behaviorism, Gordon Foxall’s intentional behaviorism, Steven Hayes’ contextual behaviorism or contextual behavioral science, and Emilio Ribes-Iñesta’s field-theory behaviorism. Each section contains three chapters: the first one written by the original proponent of each of these forms of behaviorism, the second one written by a commentator, and the third one written by the proponent, replying to the commentator. Contemporary Behaviorisms in Debate will be a valuable tool to behavior analysts and psychologists in general by providing an introduction to contemporary forms of behaviorism and promoting debates about the main philosophical issues faced by the field of behavior analysis today— issues that can directly influence future epistemological variations in the selection process of “behaviorisms.” By doing so the book is directed not only to the present, but, more importantly, toward the future of the field.

Book excerpt: The rapid growth of behavior therapy over the past 20 years has been well doc umented. Yet the geometric expansion of the field has been so great that it deserves to be recounted. We all received our graduate training in the mid to late 1960s. Courses in behavior therapy were then a rarity. Behavioral training was based more on informal tutorials than on systematic programs of study. The behavioral literature was so circumscribed that it could be easily mastered in a few months of study. A mere half-dozen books (by Wolpe, Lazarus, Eysenck, Ullmann, and Krasner) more-or-Iess comprised the behavioral library in the mid- 1960s. Semirial works by Ayllon and Azrin, Bandura, Franks, and Kanfer in 1968 and 1969 made it only slightly more difficult to survey the field. Keeping abreast of new developments was not very difficult, as Behaviour Research and Therapy and the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis were the only regular outlets for behavioral articles until the end of the decade, when Behavior Therapy and Be havior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry first appeared. We are too young to be maudlin, but "Oh for the good old days!" One of us did a quick survey of his bookshelves and stopped counting books with behavior or behavioral in the titles when he reached 100. There were at least half again as many behavioral books without those words in the title.

The possibility of integrating psychoanalytic and behavior therapies has been controversial since it was first proposed about 50 years ago, and this has elicited a wide range of reactions from both psychologists and psy chiatrists. It was with the hope of fostering constructive interchange that this book was conceived. We wanted to spark further thinking about the question in the title in a way that could lead either to conceptual and clinical progress toward an integrated approach or to a clearer sense of the obstacles involved. In either case, we hoped that it would present a healthy challenge to current forms of psychoanalytic and behavior therapies. The present volume was stimulated by the appearance in 1977 of Paul Wachtel's book Psychoanalysis and Behavior Therapy: Toward an Integration. Al though many reviewers did not necessarily agree with Wachtel's proposals for integration, they (and we) were highly laudatory of his attempt. After reading the book, Hal Arkowitz organized a symposium on integration that took place in Chicago at the November 1978 meeting of the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy. The symposium included Cyril Franks, Merton Gill, Hans Strupp, Paul Wachtel, and Michael Merbaum as moderator. Arkowitz subsequently proposed to edit a book on integra tion and invited Messer to be coeditor.
