Book excerpt: Iraq's experimental contemporary artists have never had a chance to present their work for an Iraq Pavilion at the Biennale di Venezia; the first and last major appearance in 1976 outlined only some of their "modern" artists. The Iraq Pavilion for 2011 will indeed show the world an exciting professionally-curated selection of 6 Iraqi artists from two generations, including various artistic media (painting, performance, video, photography, sculpture/installation). [Ali Assaf, Commissioner for the Pavilion of Iraq 2011] This publication, supported also by Major Patron Hussain Ali Al Hariri, is thus a homage to all participants in the 2011 Pavilion of Iraq, a pilot project that is the basis for the continuation of the Pavilion for the next edition in 2013 and the creation of a permanent platform for Iraqi contemporary art.

Book excerpt: A book that highlights the enduring talent of a group of contemporary Iraqi artists who are united in their experience of exile. Modern Iraqi art represents one of the main foundation stones of modern Arab culture. As with Iran, modern and contemporary culture in Iraq draws heavily on its rich pre-Islamic and Islamic heritage, from the Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian civilizations through to Ottoman Baghdad, the Iraq of the Baath Party, and today a country that has been ravaged by foreign invasion. In the 1970s, Baghdad was at the center of a pan-Arab art movement. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, it became clear that the art movement was becoming a political tool of propaganda for the Baath Party. Forced to work within the parameters set by the government, a number of leading artists decided to leave Iraq for Europe and North America. Today, a new generation of Iraqi artists is receiving much-deserved international acclaim. Their art draws increasing attention from international seasoned collectors and is at the forefront of modern and contemporary Arab art.

Book Shoot an Iraqi

Download or read book Shoot an Iraqi written by Wafaa Bilal and published by City Lights Books. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wafaa Bilal's childhood in Iraq was defined by the horrific rule of Saddam Hussein, two wars, a bloody uprising and time spent interned in chaotic refugee camps in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Bilal eventually made it to the United States to become a professor and a successful artist, but when his brother was killed by an unmanned U.S. Predator drone, he decided to use his art to confront those in the comfort zone with the realities of life in a conflict zone. His response was “Domestic Tension,” an unsettling interactive performance piece: for one month, Bilal lived alone in a prison cell-sized room in the line of fire of a remote-controlled paintball gun and a camera that connected him to Internet viewers around the world. Visitors to the gallery and a virtual audience that grew by the thousands could shoot at him twenty-four hours a day. The project received overwhelming worldwide attention and spawned provocative online debates; ultimately, Bilal was named Chicago Tribune’s Artist of the Year. Structured in two parallel narratives, the story of Bilal’s life journey and his “Domestic Tension” experience, Shoot an Iraqi, is for anyone who seeks insight into the current conflict in Iraq and for those fascinated by interactive art technologies and the ever-expanding world of online gaming. Iraqi-born artist Wafaa Bilal has exhibited his art worldwide, and traveled and lectured extensively to inform audiences of the situation of the Iraqi people, and the importance of peaceful conflict resolution. Bilal's 2007 dynamic installation "Domestic Tension" gained global recognition, being named Artist of the Year by the Chicago Tribune. Bilal has held exhibitions in Baghdad, the Netherlands, Thailand and Croatia; as well as at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, the Milwaukee Art Museum and various other US galleries. His residencies have included Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, California; Catwalk in New New York; and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Book Baghdad Journal

Download or read book Baghdad Journal written by Steve Mumford and published by Drawn and Quarterly. This book was released on 2005-09-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An explosive conflict, as seen through the eyes of a war artist. Bagdad Journal is the outstanding culmination of four voyages to war-torn Iraq by artist Steve Mumford. In the long tradition of war artists, particularly Winslow Homer's work for Harper's Magazine, Mumford meticulously documents the everyday scenes of Iraq in bold, breathtaking watercolors and drawings and paints a human side of the war that can be lost in the immediacy of photographic and broadcast images. Not overtly political, Bagdad Journal presents portraits of life from all sides of the polarizing conflict. With sketch pad and notebook in hand, Mumford illuminates the routine activities of a nation in turmoil-from the individual soldiers of American platoons to Baghdad residents going about their daily lives amid the chaos surrounding them. There will be a traveling exhibit of artwork from Baghdad Journal and presentations by Mumford on his Iraq experience in conjunction with the publication of this book.

Book Sights on Iraqi Modern and Contemporary Art from the Ibrahimi Collection

Download or read book Sights on Iraqi Modern and Contemporary Art from the Ibrahimi Collection written by and published by Skira. This book was released on 2024-03-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ibrahimi's private art collection of Iraqi modern and contemporary artists. The Ibrahimi art collection is a living, growing body of work. It includes works that represent the Iraqi modern art movement from its inception in the 1920s to the present. It provides a vivid testimony of the movement's continuous creativity and growth in spite of the fact that most of the artists are now living all over the world. This clearly demonstrates that the communication between Iraqi artists of all generations continues, albeit on a personal level, through exhibitions held in Amman, Beirut, and the Arab Gulf capitals. Founded by Iraqi medical doctor and businessman Hasanain Al-Ibrahimi, the collection aims to contribute to the preservation of the rich heritage of Iraqi modern and contemporary art and raise awareness of its creativity, without any preference for specific artists or critics.

Book Hiroshima After Iraq

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rosalyn Deutsche
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 0231152795
  • Pages : 122 pages

Download or read book Hiroshima After Iraq written by Rosalyn Deutsche and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many on the left lament an apathy or amnesia toward recent acts of war. Particularly during the George W. Bush administration's invasion of Iraq, opposition to war seemed to lack the heat and potency of the 1960s and 1970s, giving the impression that passionate dissent was all but dead. Through an analysis of three politically engaged works of art, Rosalyn Deutsche argues against this melancholic attitude, confirming the power of contemporary art to criticize subjectivity as well as war. Deutsche selects three videos centered on the deployment of the atomic bomb: Krzysztof Wodiczko's Hiroshima Projection (1999), made after the first Gulf War; Silvia Kolbowski's After Hiroshima mon amour (2005-2008); and Leslie Thornton's Let Me Count the Ways (2004-2008), which followed the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Each of these works confronts the ethical task of addressing historical disaster, and each explores the intersection of past and present wars. These artworks profoundly contribute to the discourse of war resistance, illuminating the complex dynamics of viewing and interpretation. Deutsche employs feminist and psychoanalytic approaches in her study, questioning both the role of totalizing images in the production of warlike subjects and the fantasies that perpetuate, especially among the left, traditional notions of political dissent. She ultimately reveals the passive collusion between leftist critique and dominant discourse in which personal dimensions of war are denied.

Book Selections from The Art of Party Crashing in Medieval Iraq

Download or read book Selections from The Art of Party Crashing in Medieval Iraq written by Al-Khatib Al-Baghdadi and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He’s fond of anyone who throws a party; he’s always at a party in his dreams, for party-crashing’s blazoned on his heart . . . a prisoner to the path of fi ne cuisine. With this statement, al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, a Muslim preacher and scholar, introduces The Art of Party-Crashing, a book that represents a sharp departure from the religious scholarship for which he is known. Compiled in the eleventh century, this collection of irreverent and playful anecdotes celebrates eating, drinking, and general merriment. Ribald jokes, flirtations, and wry observations of misbehaving Muslims acquaint readers with everyday life in medieval Iraq in a way that is both entertaining and edifying. Selove’s translation, accompanied by her whimsical drawings, introduces the delights and surprises of medieval Arabic humor to a new audience.
