Book excerpt: "Contemporary art in the early twenty-first century is often discussed as though it were a radically new phenomenon unmoored from history. Yet all works of art were once contemporary to the artist and culture that produced them. In What Was Contemporary Art? Richard Meyer reclaims the contemporary from historical amnesia, exploring episodes in the study, exhibition, and reception of early twentieth-century art and visual culture.

Book Karyn Olivier Everything That s Alive Moves

Download or read book Karyn Olivier Everything That s Alive Moves written by and published by Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multimedia reveries on the power and rhetoric of public monuments and the persistence of the political past This publication documents the first solo museum exhibition of Philadelphia-based sculptor Karyn Olivier (born 1968), focusing on recent trajectories of her investigation into scale and public memory, particularly as activated for monuments and memorials. After several years developing a number of public commissions, and a year's study in Rome, Olivier revisited a handful of recent works alongside her first forays into video and sound, to consider the conflicted histories and unresolved spaces monuments too often shadow. Organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, the exhibition traveled to the University at Buffalo Art Galleries. Exhibition images from the venues are accompanied by the full narrative text for Oliver's first video; an overview essay from ICA Daniel and Brett Sundheim Chief Curator Anthony Elms; UB Art Galleries curator Liz Park's in-depth consideration of Moving the Obelisk; and a critical assessment by art historian Andrianna Campbell-LaFleur.

Book Christopher Knowles

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Christopher Knowles written by Hilton Als and published by Gregory R. Miller. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The artistic career of Christopher Knowles (born 1959) began at the age of 13, when his writings and recordings came to the notice of avant-garde theater director Robert Wilson. Still a teenager, Knowles went on to write the libretto for Wilson and Philip Glass' opera Einstein on the Beach, and his collaborations with Wilson would continue for decades. His practice spans many mediums--text, sound, painting, sculpture and performance--and exhibits a fascination with the materiality of language. In a Word is the most comprehensive look at Knowles' work to date, published for his exhibition of the same name, organized by Anthony Elms and Hilton Als. Containing an autobiographical text by the artist himself, new texts by Elms and curator Lauren Digiulio and a personal reflection by Als, this is an essential resource on an under-recognized artist.

Book The Museum Establishment and Contemporary Art

Download or read book The Museum Establishment and Contemporary Art written by Rebecca J. DeRoo and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-09 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth account of the protests that shook France in 1968 and which served as a catalyst to a radical reconsideration of artistic practice that has shaped both art and museum exhibitions up to the present. Rebecca DeRoo examines how issues of historical and personal memory, the separation of public and private domains, and the ordinary objects of everyday life emerged as central concerns for museums and for artists, as both struggled to respond to the protests. She argues that the responses of the museums were only partially faithful to the aims of the activist movements. Museums, in fact, often misunderstood and misrepresented the work of artists that was exhibited as a means of addressing these concerns. Analyzing how museums and critics did and did not address the aims of the protests, DeRoo highlights the issues relevant to the politics of the public display of art that have been central to artistic representation, in France as well as in North America.

Collects 27 original essays by expert scholars describing the current state of scholarship in art history and visual studies, and pointing to future directions in the field. Offers synthetic analysis, as well as new approaches to, debates central to the visual arts since 1945 such as those addressing formalism, the avant-garde, the role of the artist, technology and art, and the society of the spectacle.
