Book Contemporary American Literature Bibliographies and Study Outlines Classic Reprint

Download or read book Contemporary American Literature Bibliographies and Study Outlines Classic Reprint written by John Matthews Manly and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary American Literature, Bibliographies and Study Outlines This book is intended as a companion volume to Contemporary British Literature; but the differences between conditions in America and in England have made it necessary to alter somewhat the original plan. In America today we have a few excellent writers who challenge comparison with the best of present-day England. We have many more who have been widely successful in the business of making novels, poems, plays, which cannot rank as literature at all. In choosing from such a large number a list for study, it is our hope that we have not omitted the name of any author who counts as a force in our developing literature; but, on the other hand, it is undoubtedly true that we have excluded many writers whose work compares favorably with that of some on the list. Our choice has been governed by two principles: (1) To include experimental work - work dealing with fresh materials or attempting new methods - rather than better work on familiar patterns; and (2) to represent varying tendencies in the literary effort of our country today rather than work that ranks high in popular taste. The task of doing justice to every writer is impossible; but we have been primarily concerned not with writers but with readers - those who wish guidance to the best that there is in our literature and to the signs that point to the future. The word contemporary we have interpreted arbitrarily to mean since the beginning of the War, excluding writers who died before August, 1914, and living authors who have produced no work since then. Space limitations made it impossible to go back to the beginning of the century, and no other date since then is so significant as 1914. The biographical material is limited to information of interest for the interpretation of work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Contemporary American Literature

Download or read book Contemporary American Literature written by Anna Lorraine Guthrie and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary American Literature: A Study Outline It has been deemed best to confine the work in this outline to a few authors, rather than to attempt to cover the whole field by giving a place to each one of the innumerable authors whose work falls within the limits of contemporary American literature. Pattee's "History of American literature since 1870" has been chosen as the main basis of the outline. Some authors not dealt with in Pattee have been included, preference having been given to those most commonly referred to in books and periodicals. Authors whose literary activity has had its beginning since 1900 have not been mentioned. In this outline the suggested points for each paper embody the leading facts about the author. They may be regarded as questions to be looked up by the whole club, they may be assigned to individuals, or they may be treated as a whole by one person. Each one who is responsible for a main topic is advised to use his own judgment in handling his subject and in bringing out other phases than those outlined. The Readings are also suggestions for which other selections may be substituted. The Recommended Reading represents the general consensus of opinion of critics and writers as to the best work of the various authors. Quotations have been freely given in the hope that they may help to a better and more sympathetic understanding of the author, and with the intent that each one may study and decide independently whether as estimates they are just and true. Book Contemporary British Literature

Download or read book Contemporary British Literature written by John Matthews Manly and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary British Literature: Bibliographies and Study Outlines This book is intended as a tool for students and studious readers of Contemporary British literature. If the demand warrants, it will be followed by a similar book for American authors, and perhaps by a third on Continental literature. Our aim in making it is neither to reproduce the information available in books of the Who's Who type and in indexes to periodical literature nor to provide criticisms of authors and discussions of literary schools and movements. It is to suggest materials, outlines, and methods of work, which will enable students to form intelligent judgments of individual authors and to discover and appraise for themselves the outstanding literary tendencies. In this way we hope to aid individual students in working out and applying their own standards of criticism - without which extensive reading is an injury rather than a benefit - and to leave the field clear for constructive criticism by teachers giving courses in the subject. The difficulties involved in making a book of this kind scarcely need explanation. A recent list of poets who have published in England since 1912 contains more than a thousand names; and the compiler says that he has omitted as many more. The number of works of fiction (excluding translations) published in the United Kingdom in 1920 is nearly one thousand. With all the help of periodical criticism it is impossible to be sure of including the best and only the best. We have tried to list all authors of possible importance to any student of current tendencies in literature, taking too many rather than too few. Some living writers whose work belongs entirely to the Victorian period have been excluded. Some writers who have died since 1914 have been included because their work is still a living influence. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines in American Literature The following outlines are arranged for class use in connection with text-books and reference books. They are not intended to be committed to memory by the pupil, but rather to guide him in the study of an author's works. In studying a literary production the pupil should learn: (i) the name of its author, (2) what it is about, (3) the circum stances under which it was written or which led to its writing, (4) so much of the author's life as will throw light on the work or add interest to it. The names of periodicals are given in italics; other literature, in black type. F. E. S. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Chronological Outlines of American Literature Classic Reprint written by Selden L. Whitcomb and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronological Outlines of American Literature Chronology is the backbone of history - of the history of literature as of any other. Perhaps no tool is more useful to a student of literature than a well-made table of well-selected titles and dates. Of late years no better implement of this kind has been devised than Mr. Frederick Ryland's "Chronological Outlines of English Literature," published in 1890. Mr. Ryland planned a work which should occupy toward literary history the position a date-book holds toward political history. In his Part I. he sought to bring "the annals of English literature into connection with general European literature and with history, so that a glance enables us to see the position that a given work occupies in the line of development;" and in his Part II. he gave an alphabetical list of authors with their principal works. Mr. Ryland hoped that Part I. would perform in some degree "the same kind of service for the student of literary history as a map does for the student of geography," while Part II. could be utilized in "studying literature from the biographical point of view." That Mr. Ryland has been successful in his hope is the testimony of all who have had occasion to use his invaluable manual; and the more it has been used, the more fully are its merits recognized.
