Book Water and Land Security in Drylands

Download or read book Water and Land Security in Drylands written by Mohamed Ouessar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents recent lessons learned in the context of research and development for various dryland ecosystems, focusing on water resources management, land and vegetation cover degradation and remediation, and socioeconomic aspects, as well as integrated approaches to ensuring water and land security in view of the current and predicted climate change. As water and land are the essential bases of food production, the management of these natural resources is becoming a cornerstone for the development of dryland populations. The book gathers the peer-reviewed, revised versions of the most outstanding papers on these topics presented at the ILDAC2015 Conference in Djerba, Tunisia.

Book Groundwater Contamination Use of Models in Decision Making

Download or read book Groundwater Contamination Use of Models in Decision Making written by G. Jousma and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The protection of groundwater resources has emerged in recent years as a high priority topic on the agenda of many countries. In responding to the growing concern over deteriorating groundwater quality, many countries are developing a comprehensive regulatory framework for the management of subsurface water resources with management referring to both quantity and quality aspects. Within this framework, groundwater models are rapidly coming to playa central role in the development of protection and rehabilitation strategies. These models provide forecasts of the future state of the groundwater aquifer systems and/or the unsaturated zone in response to proposed management initiatives. For example, models will predict the effects of implementing a proposed management scheme on water levels and on the transport and fate of pollutants. The models are now used in the formulation of policies and regulations, the issuing of permits, design of monitoring and data collection systems, and the development of enforcement actions. The growth in the use of these sophisticated tools has led to many unforeseen problems in groundwater management. Lingering issues include reliability of codes, quality assurance in model development and applications, efficient utiliza tion of human and material resources, technology transfer and training. Some issues have legal ramifications, as in cases where the applications of models have been contested in courts.

Book Aquifer Systems Management Darcy s Legacy in a World of Impending Water Shortage

Download or read book Aquifer Systems Management Darcy s Legacy in a World of Impending Water Shortage written by Laurence Chery and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented at the International Association of Hydrogeologists Dijon Symposium, this book contains 43 selected papers, grouped into six topics, that address the following issues: large aquifers, resource assessment; large aquifers, water salinity and evolution; karstic and carbonate aquifer systems; geothermal aquifer systems; aquifer contamination studies; and aquifer monitoring systems and management. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the publication of Darcy's Law, the volume includes a summary of Darcy's life and his contribution to science, and five invited contributions on modern methods to estimate the hydraulic conductivity of aquifers.

Book Aquifer Systems Management

Download or read book Aquifer Systems Management written by Laurence Chery and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2007-09-15 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 2050, the demand for water to sustain world agriculture will increase by seventy-five per cent in order to feed an estimated nine billion inhabitants. Increased amounts of water will be required for irrigation and for industrial and domestic use. Natural ecosystems will be threatened by the expansion of agricultural land and by a reduction in water availability, while climate change will exacerbate the situation. Management of available resources, particularly groundwater, will become more critical and aquifers will need to be managed for the benefit of all. These selected papers were first presented at the International Association of Hydrogeologists, Dijon 2006, and are divided into six themes: large aquifers, resource assessment; large aquifers, water salinity and evolution; karstic and carbonate aquifer systems; geothermal aquifer systems; aquifer contamination studies and aquifer monitoring systems and management. The volume also includes a short biography of Henry Darcy and illustrates his contribution to science. Five invited contributions describe modern methods for estimating the hydraulic conductivity of aquifers.

Book Quantitative Hydrogeology

Download or read book Quantitative Hydrogeology written by Ghislain de Marsily and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to combine two separate themes: a description of one of the links in the chain of the water cycle inside the earth's crust i.e., the subsurface flow; and the quantification of the various types of this flow, obtained by applying the principles of fluid mechanics in porous media. The first part is the more descriptive, and geological of the two. It deals with the concept of water resources, which then leads us on to other links in the cycle: rainfall, infiltration, evaporation: runoff, and surface water resources. The second part is necessary to quantify groundwater resources. It points the way to other applications, such as solutions to civil engineering problems including drainage and compaction; and transport problems in porous media, including aquifer pollution by miscible fluids, multiphase flow of immiscible fluids, and heat transfer in porous media, i.e., geothermal problems. However, the qualitative and the quantitative aspects are not treated separately but combined and blended together, just as geology and hydrology are woven together in hydrogeology.
