Book Options for the Remediation of Contaminated Sediments in the Great Lakes

Download or read book Options for the Remediation of Contaminated Sediments in the Great Lakes written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews and evaluates technologies for the remediation of contaminated sediments. It is not intended to be a cookbook which tells the reader what must be done for each area being considered. It does, however, critically evaluate each technology and provide guidance on choosing a particular option. Although precise costs could not be ascribed to each technology, dollar ranges based where possible on actual costs are provided. In addition, the factors or parameter affecting the cost of a particular technology are discussed. This report is one of two documents which present guidance on contaminated sediment issues. The companion report, prepared by the Assessment Work Group, examines the methods for assessing the nature, severity and extent of imparment due to contaminated sediments. This information is essential prior to examining and choosing remedial options.

Book Contaminants of the Great Lakes

Download or read book Contaminants of the Great Lakes written by Jill Crossman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the globally important freshwater resource of the Great Lakes, which is currently threatened by contaminants that compromise water quality and impact its ecological and economic health. Divided into four parts, this volume covers historic, current and emerging sources of contamination from heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants to microplastics; and identifies their ecological impacts. Due to factors ranging from rapidly changing land use practices, climate change and our emerging understanding of their impact on biological, chemical and physical interactions, the effectiveness of management strategies has proven highly variable. Continued enhancements in the rate of lake recovery are required to sustain the health of the Great Lakes. Accordingly, the book also explores recent advances in contaminant detection, along with future steps forward in lake management approaches. Revealing our current knowledge gaps and providing a roadmap towards sustainable solutions, the book offers a valuable asset for scientists, managers and the public alike.

Book Biological Remediation of Contaminated Sediments with Special Emphasis on the Great Lakes

Download or read book Biological Remediation of Contaminated Sediments with Special Emphasis on the Great Lakes written by United States. Environmental Protection Agency. Office of Research and Development and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings describe a workshop held July 17-19, 1990 in Manitowoc, WI, at which biological remediation of contaminated sediments was discussed. For the purpose of the workshop, contaminated sediments of primary interest were those within six of the Areas of Concern (AOC) identified by the U.S./Canada International Joint Commission's Great Lakes Water Quality Board; five of which are priority concerns of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Assessment and Remediation of Contaminated Sediments (ARCS) program. The workshop was organized around four topic areas: (1) Overview of the Areas of Concern; (2) Biological degradataion of PCBs; (3) Biological degradation of PAHs; and (4) Biological treatment of metal species. For the first topic area, presentations were made describing site characteristic of the Ashtabula River, OH; Buffalo River, NY; Sheboygan River, WI; Grand Calumet River, IN; Saginaw River and Bay, MI; and Hamilton Harbor, Ontario, Canada. For the remaining topic areas, presentations were made by investigators actively involved in either bench, pilot, or full-scale studies concerning these areas. In this document extended abstracts written by the presenters are given, as well as brief summaries of the presentations and discussion sessions.

Book Sediments and Toxic Substances

Download or read book Sediments and Toxic Substances written by Wolfgang Calmano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern sediment research on contaminants five aspects are discussed which, in an overlapping succession, also reflect develop ment of knowledge on particle-associated pollutants during the past twenty-five years: (1) identification of sources and their distribution; (2) evaluation of solid/solution relations; (3) study of transfer mecha nisms to biological systems; (4) assessment of environment impact; and (5) selection and further development of remedial measures, in par ticular, of dredged materials. Scientific research and practical develop ment are still expanding in all these individual aspects. Similar to other waste materials, management of contaminated sed iments requires a holistic approach. This means that assessment of biogeochemical reactions, interfacial processes and transfer mecha nisms as well as the prognosis of long-term borderline conditions, in particular of capacity-controlling properties, should be an integrated part of the wider management scheme, i.e., the analytical and experi mental parameters should always be related to potential remediation options for a specific sediment problem. The underlying coordinated project, which was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Science and Technology (now the Federal Ministry for Education, Science, Research and Technology) provided excellent opportunities for multidisciplinary effort, bringing together biologists, chemists, engineers, geologists and other researchers. During its active phase, the group attracted much interest nationally and internationally. The group members highly appreciate the manifold contacts and invitations during the past five years.
