La contabilidad económico-financiera tradicional ha cedido espacio a las nuevas reflexiones del saber contable que amplían su visión a nuevos campos de actuación como las dimensiones ambiental, social y cultural. El aumento del universo discursivo contable implica asumir nuevos desafíos en las estructuras teóricas, conceptuales y procedimental es. En la medida en que la arquitectura anterior no permite asumir los nuevos retos, se asiste a una revolución científica, en lenguaje kuhniano, que implica transformaciones ontológicas, epistemológicas, teleológicas y axiológicas, como proponen las recientes formulaciones de la teoría tridimensional de la contabilidad. La reflexión ética es el motor de la nueva contabilidad. Las organizaciones, privadas y gubernamentales, han perdido confianza pública como resultado de un accionar poco responsable que ha traído graves consecuencias para el hombre y otras especies, tanto en el presente como en el caso de deterioros que seguirán afectando a las generaciones futuras.
