Wise use of the available sup plies is important in planning to take care of our future needs for food and other agricultural products. Proper planning toward this end requires among other things detailed knowledge of the extent of previous use of fertilizers as well as of the prospective needs and probable supplies to meet these needs. This circular is based in part on questionnaires collected by the War Food Administration, on information from publications of various States, and on many other sources. The figures pre sented give some details of the use of fertilizers by States in the year ended June 30, 1944. The results of the survey afford an opportunity to study present trends in use and some effects of the war, by comparison with statistics for earlier periods. It is hoped that this circular will assist both Government and industry in formulating policies and in making recommendations for the future. In the few exceptions where consumption was lower, the amount of decrease was usually not as great as occurred the previous year. Consumption of mixtures in the South Central region has continued to decrease which was offset, in part, by a higher use of materials. Only in the Pacific region has consumption of both classes increased and in the South Atlantic region, decreased in the two years, respectively. The primary plant nutrients are nitrogen, phosphoric acid, and potash. Only these three are included in this work. Plant food and plant nutrient are here used as synonymous terms, as is customary in fertilizer laws and common usage, though this does not strictly follow the terminology of plant physiology. Commercial fertilizers usually contain somewhat more of each plant nutrient than is guaranteed or indicated by the grade. This excess, known as the overrun, was used in determining the actual nitrogen (n), phosphoric acid (p205), and potash contents of fertilizers consumed in 1941 by the method described in detail by Mehring and Deming Briefly, this method involves averaging the guaranties and analyses given in the State fertilizer control bulletin for all mixtures of a given class sold during the season involved and adding the excess of the average analysis over the average guaranty to the weighted average grade as found from the tons of each grade sold. Parts of the necessary data for 1941 were unavailable for Arkansas, Idaho, Illinois, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming: In such cases, estimates were made from 1939 tonnage data and analyses published by the nearest States with similar conditions.
