And 72 percent of parents say they have slept with their cell phones. The issue of mobile online privacy is an issue that affects nearly every American-young and old. Everywhere you look, someone is texting or tweeting, uploading an app, or downloading a photo. These devices have become ubiquitous. And the question of whether private information-known only to the person holding this device-is being collected or shared with others is critical.

Book The Cambridge Handbook of Consumer Privacy

Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of Consumer Privacy written by Evan Selinger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Businesses are rushing to collect personal data to fuel surging demand. Data enthusiasts claim personal information that's obtained from the commercial internet, including mobile platforms, social networks, cloud computing, and connected devices, will unlock path-breaking innovation, including advanced data security. By contrast, regulators and activists contend that corporate data practices too often disempower consumers by creating privacy harms and related problems. As the Internet of Things matures and facial recognition, predictive analytics, big data, and wearable tracking grow in power, scale, and scope, a controversial ecosystem will exacerbate the acrimony over commercial data capture and analysis. The only productive way forward is to get a grip on the key problems right now and change the conversation. That's exactly what Jules Polonetsky, Omer Tene, and Evan Selinger do. They bring together diverse views from leading academics, business leaders, and policymakers to discuss the opportunities and challenges of the new data economy.

Book The Influences of Big Data Analytics

Download or read book The Influences of Big Data Analytics written by Dr. Joseph Aluya, D.B.A. and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-09-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theoretical framework for this book was our ground-up theory of the Scope, Size, Speed, and Skill (4Ss) and Technological Situational Happenstances (TSHs) applied to Big data analytics. With in-depth research, we catechized the effects of the coalesced insights from big data influencing the architectures of incremental and radical business models. We discussed data inflation and the global impact of TSHs. We showed how deft leadership used insights gleaned from big data analytics to make strategic decisions. The big data syndrome led to Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia in our case study. Our study of APPLE Corporation's use of large datasets was explicitly analyzed. Leaderships' failure to incorporate those contextual elements afforded by insights gleaned from big data analytics, concomitant with the associated costs led to acute forms of irrational rationalism, groupthink, and faulty decision making. We explained the statistics used to essentially describe this paradigm shift, such as high dimensionality, incidental endogeneity, noise accumulation, spurious correlation, and computational costs. Significantly, machine learning challenged the status quo by effectively changing the existing technological landscape. To scholarly critics, how would supervised and un-supervised learning algorithms advance the trajectory of perspectives in applied knowledge under the umbrella of big data? Further, political and socio-economics tied to big data was examined. We recommended leaders should have a shared cognition on how to leverage analytics from large datasets for competitive advantages. Most significantly, leaders or managers should be cognizant of the inextricable synergies that seamlessly flow from adroitly implementing a strategy to profit from the speed, size, skill, and scope (i.e. the 4Ss) of the big data environment, conditioned by the leveraging of those transactional situational happenstances generated by increases in market volatility. We concluded the algorithmic processes of leveraging insights from big data have globally resulted in a disruption of current technological pathways.

Book Popular Mechanics Who s Spying On You

Download or read book Popular Mechanics Who s Spying On You written by Erik Sofge and published by Union Square & Co.. This book was released on 2013-01-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Its not paranoia; we ARE being watched. Today, thanks to technology and new media--cell phone GPS, backscatter scanners, online financial transactions, cloud-stored medical records, Facebook and Twitter--our every activity can be quietly monitored. And now that inexpensive gene sequencing seems imminent, even our bodies secrets may be up for grabs. This groundbreaking investigation shows how Americas privacy is under assault--and what we can do to protect ourselves. Covering everything from the News of the World hacking scandal to identity and credit theft, Popular Mechanics Whos Spying On You? features stories of real people whose privacy has been violated. It looks at the technology powering those intrusions, reveals the advances in security that may eventually protect us, and thoroughly explores the social and legal ramifications of our increasingly complex and high-tech society. A final chapter offers direct, service-oriented tips to safeguard privacy, along with an exploration of how a new, post-private generation willingly surrenders personal information--and the potential pitfalls and benefits of broadcasting your life on your own terms.
