Book Dawn of the Electronic Age

Download or read book Dawn of the Electronic Age written by Frederik Nebeker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-03-30 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and fascinating account of electrical and electronics history Much of the infrastructure of today's industrialized world arose in the period from the outbreak of World War I to the conclusion of World War II. It was during these years that the capabilities of traditional electrical engineering—generators, power transmission, motors, electric lighting and heating, home appliances, and so on—became ubiquitous. Even more importantly, it was during this time that a new type of electrical engineering—electronics—emerged. Because of its applications in communications (both wire-based and wireless), entertainment (notably radio, the phonograph, and sound movies), industry, science and medicine, and the military, the electronics industry became a major part of the economy. Dawn of the Electronic Age?explores how this engineering knowledge and its main applications developed in various scientific, economic, and social contexts, and explains how each was profoundly affected by electrical technologies. It takes an international perspective and a narrative approach, unfolding the story chronologically. Though a scholarly study (with sources of information given in endnotes for engineers and historians of science and technology), the book is intended for the general public.?Ultimately, it tells the story of the development of a new realm of engineering and its widespread applications during the remarkable and tragic period of two world wars and the decades in between.

Book Chaos in Electric Drive Systems

Download or read book Chaos in Electric Drive Systems written by K. T. Chau and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Chaos in Electric Drive Systems: Analysis, Control and Application authors Chau and Wang systematically introduce an emerging technology of electrical engineering that bridges abstract chaos theory and practical electric drives. The authors consolidate all important information in this interdisciplinary technology, including the fundamental concepts, mathematical modeling, theoretical analysis, computer simulation, and hardware implementation. The book provides comprehensive coverage of chaos in electric drive systems with three main parts: analysis, control and application. Corresponding drive systems range from the simplest to the latest types: DC, induction, synchronous reluctance, switched reluctance, and permanent magnet brushless drives. The first book to comprehensively treat chaos in electric drive systems Reviews chaos in various electrical engineering technologies and drive systems Presents innovative approaches to stabilize and stimulate chaos in typical drives Discusses practical application of chaos stabilization, chaotic modulation and chaotic motion Authored by well-known scientists in the field Lecture materials available from the book's companion website This book is ideal for researchers and graduate students who specialize in electric drives, mechatronics, and electric machinery, as well as those enrolled in classes covering advanced topics in electric drives and control. Engineers and product designers in industrial electronics, consumer electronics, electric appliances and electric vehicles will also find this book helpful in applying these emerging techniques. Book Hybrid Factory

Download or read book Hybrid Factory written by Tetsuo Abo and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-05-12 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Japanese automotive and electronics firms have expanded their operations into the United States more attention has been focused on Japanese management and manufacturing. In Hybrid Factory a team of Japanese and American scholars explores the potential for the effective transfer of Japanese management and production systems that have been credited with giving Japanese firms their competitive superiority to a much different national culture. The book looks in particular at which management factors, that provide strength to Japanese production systems, can survive the transfer to the United States or whether the radically different social and cultural environment makes such a transfer impossible. Contributors: Tetsuo Abo, University of Tokyo Hiroshi Itagaki, Saitama University Duane Kujawa, University of Miami Kunio Kamiyama, Josai University Hiroshi Kumon, Hosei University Tetsuji Kawamura, Teikyo University Mira Wilkins, Florida International University

Book Evolving Households

Download or read book Evolving Households written by Jeremy Greenwood and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transformative effect of technological change on households and culture, seen from a macroeconomic perspective through simple economic models. In Evolving Households, Jeremy Greenwood argues that technological progress has had as significant an effect on households as it had on industry. Taking a macroeconomic perspective, Greenwood develops simple economic models to study such phenomena as the rise in married female labor force participation, changes in fertility rates, the decline in marriage, and increased longevity. These trends represent a dramatic transformation in everyday life, and they were made possible by advancements in technology. Greenwood also addresses how technological progress can cause social change. Greenwood shows, for example, how electricity and labor-saving appliances freed women from full-time household drudgery and enabled them to enter the labor market. He explains that fertility dropped when higher wages increased the opportunity cost of having children; he attributes the post–World War II baby boom to a combination of labor-saving household technology and advances in obstetrics and pediatrics. Marriage rates declined when single households became more economically feasible; people could be more discriminating in their choice of a mate. Technological progress also affects social and cultural norms. Innovation in contraception ushered in a sexual revolution. Labor-saving technological progress at home, together with mechanization in industry that led to an increase in the value of brain relative to brawn for jobs, fostered the advancement of women's rights in the workplace. Finally, Greenwood attributes increased longevity to advances in medical technology and rising living standards, and he examines healthcare spending, the development of new drugs, and the growing portion of life now spent in retirement.
