Download or read book Buyer Beware written by Janet Parshall and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever thought why it is that so many Christians are reticent to enter into the ‘marketplace of ideas?’ Jesus commanded us to go into the world to deliver His message of truth, delivered in love. But He never said it would easy. In Buyer Beware, Janet Parshall takes the reader on a journey through the public square where ideas are ‘bought’ and ‘sold’ but where Truth is sometimes difficult to find. She examines some of the most controversial issues being debated in our culture today, by looking at them through the lens of Scripture. Using the prophet Jeremiah’s instructive letter to the exiles, held in Babylonian captivity, Parshall shows how a people, held captive in a sin-sick, fallen world, can live abundantly and triumphantly by loving God’s truth and by boldly declaring it in the public square. Buyer Beware is designed to encourage modern day saints as they enter the ‘marketplace’ by helping them discover the richness of God’s word and the poverty of the world’s message.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: settling of British America was a unique event in modern history. For the first time, an entire continent was available to those from many cultures and religions who wished for new opportunities free from the feudal remnants and rigid class distinctions of Europe that still existed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Enlightenment ideas and new challenges combined to create documents of government that allowed a degree of freedom and social mobility that led to a proto-democratic society, despite the differences between the thirteen colonies. A group of radical politicians and writers, Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, Thomas Paine, Richard Henry Lee, George Mason, and young Thomas Jefferson by the mid 1700's increasingly spoke out against the actions of the London Government and the king. The British attempted to reassert control of the semi-independent and proud colonial governments and then send troops to enforce a series of arbitrary taxes decided by Parliament without input from the colonists. This book weaves into the story the events of the pre-revolutionary period, the lives of six radicals-and after the war- the conflicts in writing new state and federal constitutions. Our radicals persuaded most ordinary citizens that despite their long held loyalty and pride of being part of the British Empire,independence-whether peacefully or requiring force-was necessary to maintain their prosperity and freedom. However, after the Revolution, a new generation of leaders was required. Our radicals remained supporters of their states and the Articles of Confederation and were hostile to giving many powers including taxation to a strong central government under the 1787 Constitution. Only Jefferson born a generation later would contribute to the new nation despite early reservations while in France. The reputations of the others have been diminished by their resistance to forming the government we live under.

Download or read book Buyers Beware written by Patricia Joan Saunders and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buyers Beware offers a new perspective for critical inquiries about the practices of consumption in (and of) Caribbean popular culture. The book revisits commonly accepted representations of the Caribbean from “less respectable” segments of popular culture such as dancehall culture and 'sistah lit' that proudly jettison any aspirations toward middle-class respectability. Treating these pop cultural texts and phenomena with the same critical attention as dominant mass cultural representations of the region allows Patricia Joan Saunders to read them against the grain and consider whether and how their “pulp” preoccupation with contemporary fashion, music, sex, fast food, and television, is instructive for how race, class, gender, sexuality and national politics are constructed, performed, interpreted, disseminated and consumed from within the Caribbean.

Download or read book The Living Temple written by Carl E. Braaten and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's time that the body reassumed its rightful place of importance in Christian life, according to Carl and LaVonne Braaten in The Living Temple. In this sourcebook for a healthier way to live, the authors discuss the body, the foods we put into it, and how Christians are to regard it. Although often slighted in Christian tradition, the body was not regarded by Paul and the early Church as "vile flesh" to be transcended, but as a living metaphor of Christ and his people and as the dwelling-place of the Holy Spirit. The body is thus to be cared for and revered. Later thinkers, including Luther, upheld this view. But today it is increasingly difficult to fulfill this biblical ideal. "Junk" food and drink can ravage the temple. Among the many practical aspects of the Braatens' discussion are: - What vital nutrients are currently being processed out of our foods and how they can be replaced - Natural medicine's to Christianity and the foods we eat - Common myths about American nutrition and why they just aren't true - The principal vitamins and minerals and the function of each in proper nutrition Select bibliographies for further reading and continuing discussion follow each chapter. The Living Temple is a sensible Christian application of one of our most vital concerns.
